Why did the script writers fictitiously show Yee Soon Shin and Won Kyun as childhood friend? Here's my take on this. They wanted to build up the characters for the later purpose of comparing these two generals, Won Kyun the tough, brave and ruthless leader, or Yee Soon Shin . We will later get to see who is the better one to lead Choson's defense.

Probably just to add more drama, no?

I think you are both right. The childhood through early adulthood shown is fiction so they took characters that will be important in YSS's adulthood and used them for continuity and drama. But in episode 24 we see them begining to focus on Won Kyun's style as a military leader. I'm sure that it is specifically to contrast him to YSS.

in his diary "Nanjung Ilgi" the admiral writes often of won kyun...and they are not friends. the admiral more than once comments about won kyun being a disgrace.
i think history proves that the admiral was the better military leader.

I think they made them friends as to show more comparison and contrast between them. If it was just any regular character that didn't have much of a history shown, it wouldn't have that much impact.
Soon-shin was the better military leader, but Kyun is probably a better military soldier.

The truth about Won Kyun is
Probable Spoiler warning (because it's historic fact)
Won Kyun replaced Yi Soon Shin as the supreme naval commander of the Choson navy. The navy's readiness, ability ect. went to hell. In his first major battle with the Japanese he lost all of the Turtle ships as well as a huge portion of the Choson navy. This is why Yi was put back in command.

i think also that having them as friends first will make them beig rivals all that more dramatic.
Also, we're starting to see the split in a couple of ways...
1. Admiral Yi's future wife was someone who Won Kyun was going after....so that big disappointment adds fuel to the future fire
2. Won Kyun's commander calls Kyun incompetant when he lets Soon-shin go. i'm sure this comment will stick when Kyun becomes the military commander & fails.
3. Speculation -- maybe something comes between Won Kyun & the third friend (sorry, i'm blanking out), wile tat friend & Soon shin remain friends, and so Won Kyun will feel alone. And for him,it becomes embitterment.
Was there any reason for the rivalry in the first place, according to history?
