i like the fact that these three friends - Soon Shin, Kyoon and Song Ryong have such a close friendship, even at such an early age. Song Ryong is like the older brother who tries to steer Soon Shin along the straight and narrow but still needs to lighten up, and Kyoon is the tough older brother who tries to help Soon shin become more brave.
Now we start to see why during episode 4, when the imperial investigator asked him, "Do you intend to turn traitor?" that Yi sort of repeated the words. I mean, now we're going on three generations of Yi's being accused of treason. not an easy thing growing up or as an adult (especially when you have to save the entire country and no one appreciates your efforts)

I feel bad for Yi Soon Shin. Who knew that this kid, who was too scared to jump into a pond, would later save his nation, and be one of Korea's greatest heros?

well, that's why we see his childhood.
many forget that Yi Soon Shin was a human being after all
this way, when we remember how he died, and all that he did, we realize that he had to surmount a lifetime of obstacles to be the great man that he was
