I am enjoying Admiral Yi, but having a little trouble getting into it like AOW.
Is it me, or does the 'politics' seem a bit overdone? Exaggerated? Is the Emporer really that dumb to not trust Yi over Ming?
Also, the music doesn't seem to fit very well at times.

I saw some of the VODs from the korean website and from what I can tell it's no AOW(I only saw episode 6 to 11). If you think this is gonna be some heavy action type of drama early on guess again (Hopefully it will pick up steam). I thought the whole series was gonna look like the trailer, but I was wrong. Just wait till you hit episode 5 or 6 when they start concentrating on Admiral Yi life from when he was little to a young man. Don't get me wrong, I'm still gonna watch this bad boy cause I love history, but I don't think its gonna get the huge attraction that AOW had on american audiences.

Is the Emporer really that dumb to not trust Yi over Ming? the politics at that time were ridiculous so the show does a good job of showing how frustrating it was to be a good man at the time. heck, it's even frustrating to READ about it and yes the king really was that much of an idiot. another big nose myong jong in my opinion

I am enjoying the show immensely. While I find battle scenes as rousing as anyone else, I have always been drawn to the court intrigue aspects of historical dramas.

oh i was so heartbroken when they brought back the one surviving member of the sado squad. and how angry his father was that he was still alive.
it was also sad how yi was forced to kill those deserters. poor guys. but i understand why he did it. don't like it, but i understand his logic
god i would hate to be in his shoes.
and i love young nam more with every passing episode. he's like what yi probably was like before he was elevated to the supreme naval commander. no room for personal feelings when you are in charge.

Not a huge amount of fighting and massive battles, on this episode. I do hope there will be lots of fighting later on. That’s why I’m watching this show and it features the samurais after all. So we expect to see some fighting. As for the Chosun King, he's not stupid like Koryo King Myong Jong, he has to kiss up to the Ming military because they’re the ones with the huge military force and financial superpower to drive out the Japanese no matter if the decision is stupid. He has to please the Ming Emperor and his Army and Navy instead of listening to his faithful Admiral and Navy Captains.

the king WAS that stupid, he didn't overlook Yi's loyalty intentionally, he always intrinsically doubted it. he was far too easily swayed by Yi's detractors at court.

a prime example of the king's stupidity
in 1594, he stripped admiral yi of his rank and had him imprisoned after publicly humiliating him because won kyun made false accusations against Yi. Never mind the fact that Yi had given years of loyal service - nope, just threw him in jail, no questions asked.
then they started losing all their battles and the king couldn't spring him fast enough

the scene i liked most in this episode was when all the men gathered and came to show the admiral their support and they were ready, willing and able to fight despite the king's order. when young nam said 'we came to get you admiral' and YSS nodded and his eyes teared, so did mine. what a moment!
i also was moved by the killing of the hostages and the return of the lone hostage.....i know why his father treated him that way, but it was hard to watch....
and young nam is so passionate...he is quite a man.....but he has the best role-model even if they are very different.
oh, and when the admiral was in the rain, patting the mound grave and asking for guidance...another touching, teary moment. sighs.

I saw episode 3 tonight and I enjoyed it. The show had less of the wacky Konishi and the Ming buffoons, so it seemed like a serious drama now. Those poor deserters! The Admiral had to do it to set an example. Maybe he should not have killed them...just a lashing should have been in order. That stupid King has got to go! He even recognize his own cowardice but he still thinks he should be supported by the people. The nerve of him!
BTW, anyone notice that in the scene where the Japanese boats were trying to escape...the boats were moving like they had motors? The same with the Ming ship too...the oars were not even moving and the ship was blazing along. It's just details like that which takes me out of the drama sometimes. Looks like episode 4 is when the final battle takes place...Looks good! **fingers crossed**

Several weeks ago, on the "Stars Work Menial Jobs for Charity" show (I'm not sure about what the show's real name is; it runs 7:00 - 8:00 PM Mondays here in Chi), one of the jobs was building a ship for the show. They do indeed have propellers, but just tell yourself that the sails are really efficient.

I think that the arrow maker is the best character. He reminds me of Yi Ko's father, in AOW. MY personal favourite scene, was when he started beating his son, just like Yi Ko's father, would beat him. ANd in both cases, the son, who is stronger, and taller then the father, just stands there, with his eyes closed, untill the father gets tired of hitting him.

the arrow maker is a different person than Goon gan's father. he was a one time character
goon gan's dad is an oarsman
