wouldn't this be great flowerlady?
think of all the people in this country who are missing these wonderful programs. it is a shame.
maybe the cable companies are afraid of subtitled series.
some of the garbage that is being broadcast on american tv could be replaced with wonderful shows like the 'Immortal Yi Soon Shin'. now that is tv worth watching!!!!

maybe the cable companies are afraid of subtitled series. Luvarchfiend, You hit the jackpot. Some people in this country just don't like subtitles for some reason. I have friends that are very excited when I tell them about an asian movie, but once they realize that its subtitled, they walk away. I mean if people couldn't be more lazy. What so difficult to direct your eyeballs from reading and watching an image. American Television needs some historical dramas itself. We got some good historic figures for a good drama series. Abraham Lincoln, Eisenhower, JFK, Martin Luther King Jr., a drama about the civil war and how it started, American life during the depression, and more. But somehow, I know the execs would ruin it one way or the other. I can imagine it now THE DEPRESSION!!!! A new reality show where we take 6 celebrities and tell them they lost all their millions . starring Paris Hilton A-rod Bill Gates Oprah P.Diddy Nicole Richie ;D Host: Paris, Your father lost his millions and your now poor. What will you do now? Paris:

you know, there was a movie about the american revolution, cleverly titled "Revolution". It starred Al Pacino, and it was hilarious.

Paris: good one skinz. ;D i have the same problem with my friends....the second you mention subtitles their eyes glaze over like you had asked them to watch paint dry, or golf. i agree, what is the problem? there is a lot of history and people who are worth programs like these we watch in american history, but i think you are right that they would get ruined. look what crap is on tv here now. and that stuff makes my eyes glaze over. and it is my great hope that no one sees your depression reality tv idea....(they tell the money is gone and eventually the victim finds out it is a hoax) .it might be on some channel next season. sighs.

what is wrong with subtitles? (i mean i guess no one on THIS board would know either hehe)
i mean, if i had to choose between subtitles and badly dubbed english, subtitles wins hands down! even if it was well dubbed i'd still pick subtitles. there's just something about the way the actors do the voices that can't be translated into english. the inflections and tones perhaps. whenever I get anime, I never watch it in english. hiyao miyazaki, director of spirited away understood this and insisted on directing the voices of all his actors - doing multiple takes until he got it just right. there's just not the same character in the voices when done in english. i bet k-dramas would be the same (and probably turn more people off than onto them)
but if that's the case, why did crouching tiger do so well if people don't like subtitles? i never saw a dubbed version in theaters...

but if that's the case, why did crouching tiger do so well if people don't like subtitles? i never saw a dubbed version in theaters... The reason Crouching Tiger did so well is because of the action. American audiences never seen nothing like it. Women walking of vertical walls, twirling in the air, fighting on bamboo trees, etc. Hero also falls into this also. The hong kong film industry knows about this all too well. Why do you think mostly all asian movies that are brought to the theater are mostly action oriented? And the mystery, romance, historical genres are always in limited theaters. The thing I find really funny is that hollywood steal most of other genres plots, put some americans in it, and claim their original. Look at The Ring. The Ring is a japanese film which was practically stolen. They didn't even change some of the scenes in the american version. And The Ring 2,which is coming out in the spring, is stolen from the second japanese version which was done years before.
