EPISODE 1
(Yoo do, Chon Nam province, Chosun naval station, October 1598)
A full moon filled the night sky over Yoo Do as its clear light sparkled over the calm waters of the ocean. A piece of driftwood bobbed peacefully on the waves. On the shore, the soldiers, busy with preparations for the next day, were unable to see a hand emerge from the dark water, followed by two more. Three heads then surfaced and looked towards the brightly lit port. Silently, the men exchanged glances, nodded and quietly retreated back beneath the water.
At the harbor, chosun sailors in their distinctive blue uniforms bearing the character "water" were hurrying to move provisions and weapons in preparation for the next day's battle. The three strangers, now similarly attired, were also on shore. They turned suddenly at the shouting behind them.
"Hey!! You there!!! What are you doing just standing there - get a move on! This has to get done tonight!" a general shouted at several nearby sailors. As they scurried to obey his orders, his eyes fell on the three men who were staring at him mutely. "What are you waiting for? Get moving!!" They hurriedly picked up a cannon and some barrels and made a show of looking busy until the general was out of sight. One turned his gaze on a Ming vessel bearing the banners of the admiral. Nodding his head at the other two, they slunk back into the night.
Creeping outside a conference hall, they watched as various Ming and Chosun military officials entered the room. Moving to a window in order to get a better view, they were startled to hear the sound of a sword being drawn, followed by the sounds of multiple swords being drawn. Wondering what had happened, they looked inside and were astonished to see soldiers on both sides with their swords pointed at one another. The neck that Admiral Yi held his sword against belonged to none other than Chen Lien, Admiral of the Ming Navy.
"Do not try and avoid a battle! The enemy is right before our eyes!" the admiral shouted angrily.
"Can't you put your sword away?" Chen snarled threateningly.
The admiral's eyes never wavered. "First retract your statement that you will not fight," he demanded.
"Isn't your life valuable to you?" the Ming commander sneered. "Do you really think you'll live after holding a sword to my neck?"
"My life is one that fears nothing. Whether it be the Ming empire or the heavens, I will slay without hesitation anyone who seeks to oppress the people of Chosun!" Yi swore.
"You bastard!!!" Chen Lien roared. Admiral Yi only tightened his grip on his sword, as did the rest of his staff.
Stepping forward, Kwon Joon looked at the admiral and then the Ming Commander and said softly, "Jang Goon (admiral)."
Hwang Se-Tuk, who had acquired much wisdom and patience over the course of his long life, slowly placed his hand over the admiral's and lowered his sword. The air filled with the sounds of blades uncrossing as the two sides backed away from one another.
Yi Sun Shin thrust his sword downwards. "The Japanese will ultimately use Chosun as a stepping stone to invade China. If that is the case, our security means your security as well."
"However, the Japanese are retreating left and right out of fear," Chen spat.
"Unless we wipe them all out now, this war will never end. That is why Yu Jeong has agreed to join us in a joint army and naval attack in order to entrap the enemy," Yi informed him.
Chen's face betrayed his surprise. "Yu Jeong has a greed to a joint operation? "
"If you will not fight with us, I refuse to acknowledge your status as a general!"
"What?!!" the Ming admiral sputtered.
"If you are truly a general," he continued, "prove it by showing some courage!" Upon those words, the admiral turned his back on Chen Lien and his company. Angered and insulted, Chen turned on his heels and stormed out of the room, his officers in tow.
Outside, Kwon Jun stood with the admiral looking over the sea as Chen Lien's vessel disappeared into the night. "Do you think it will be alright?" he asked. "In any case, he is the admiral of the Ming navy. That reaction was most unlike you."
"If so, what WOULD be in character for admiral Yi Soon Shin?" Yi asked. "Should I have bowed my head and begged them to fight?"
"Jang goon" Kwon Jun objected quietly.
Staring at the departing ship, Yi told his subordinate, "I wish to make it known that it is their silence that prolongs this war."

"Is it true? So, Yi Sun Shin and Chen Lien had their swords at each other's throats?"
The three men in Chosun naval uniform were now kneeling with their hands on their laps. Behind them were several men wearing the signature lacquered armor of the samurai warrior.
"Yes sir!" one affirmed. "It was a very tense confrontation."
Konishi Yukinaga, the commanding officer of the Japanese fleet, paced about his conference room, thoughtfully tapping his fan in his palm. "This is good for us," he noted.
"It is a joint amphibious attack by the Chosun navy and the Ming arm " Yoshida replied morosely. "Good news for us?"
"Yoshida," Konishi said turning to his aide, "Do you know what Yi Soon Shin's problem is? He has too many enemies. It is not just us, but those in his own government who want his head. And now, he has made an enemy of the ming commander who has come to aid him." He paused and sighed contemplatively. "I on the other hand am a businessman, and i never make a deal unless I know it is a sure thing. Yoshida..."
"Yes, admiral?"
"Make haste and pay Yu Jeong a visit. If we can stop the Ming army from attacking, we will gain advantage."
"Understood, Admiral"
"This time, Yi Soon Shin will be the cause of his own misfortune."

Kwon Jun reviewed the strategy for the following day's battle. "At high tide, the Chosun and Ming forces will attack the enemy fleet at shinsungpo. At the same time, Yu Jeong and the Ming army will attack waegyon fort from the west. Once the enemy is dispersed, we will land to the right, and lay siege."
"But can we trust Yu Jeong?" Yi Sun Shin, the admiral's similarly named staff officer asked. "He has always been a bystander in this war."
"Yu Jeong wrote to the court about this very operation," Kwon Jun replied. "This time, there is no doubt that he will come through."
"Then admiral Chen Lien is the unpredictable variable" Yi Young Nam mused, his bushy eyebrows furrowed. "Do you think he will show himself?"
Pushing his chair back, Admiral Yi stood up and assured, "Chen Lien will be there. He knows why he must be there. Konishi was the one who spearheaded the invasion of Chosun. If we bring him down, we crush the spirits of the entire Japanese force. This will be the battle to end this seven year long war. Remember that!"

Not too far off, the Ming Admiral was nursing both his injured neck and his wounded pride. He turned at the sound of the sentries outside beating the war drums and blowing their horns. As his first officer swept into the room he announced, "Admiral! The Chosun navy is preparing for battle!"
Chen Lien thought for a moment and said, "Then we will also prepare for battle."
Deung Ja Leung, stunned by his order replied, "What? But Admiral -"
"This is a collaborative attack with Yu Jeong," Chen said. "If we sit idly by here then there is no telling what sorts of things Yu Jeong will say. Perhaps that our navy is weaker than the army."
"After this last incident? Do you intend to overlook Yi Soon Shin's insolence?"
"We are going to battle!" Chen answered. "And, it is not Yi Soon shin or Yu Jeong who will emerge victorious, but I Chen Lien who will beat the victory drum! I will show him the true power of the Ming Navy!"
Bowing, Deung Ja Leung departed. Chen removed the bandage from his neck wincing. After looking at it, he threw it to the floor in anger.

At the Chosun naval station, the sailors were in the process of training and preparing for the next battle. A few amused themselves by chasing a few runaway pigs. "Make way for General Piggy! Are you prepared?"
"Do you think we will get wine?" another broke in.
"For sure!" another chimed in, tripping over the pigs.
Alone in his office, Admiral Yi unsheathed his commander's sword and stared contemplatively at verse he had composed that had been carved on it. He had written that once he drew his sword that the land would be seeped in blood. Putting his sword down, he reached for a cup containing many wooden sticks and drew one. Closing his eyes, he prayed, "I pray that our cause to reclaim Chosun will end in victory." Opening his eyes, he read the character on the stick - hyoong (flaw, defect). He threw the stick aside, worry on his face.
