The broken sword thing did indeed happen according to the accounts(unlike Geunchogo and Sekobi). Some historians think that visiting Jumong with a sword symbolizes assassination of Jumong by Yuri.
Jumong's last name was Go according to the account, but some historians think that he was actually a Hae. The 6th king of Goguryeo was called King Taejo. The temple name Taejo usually only refers to the founder of a nation such as Taejo Wang Guhn of Koryo and Taejo Yi Sung Gye of Joseon(Choson). Jumong was the founder, so why would a 6th monarch be called Taejo? One theory is that the 6th monarch Taejo(Go Goong) took the throne away from the Hae family and founded the Go dynasty.
There aren't any dramas about Old Joseon(Choson), because there are hardly any account left about it. Korea went through many foreign invasions and many history books were burned during this time. The National History of Baekje written by Go Heung(from Geunnchogo), History of Goguryeo, History of Shilla, and The Annals of Koryo Dynasty are all gone. The history book on Old Joseon is gone as well. Korea was lucky to save the History of the Three Kingdoms and Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms written during Koryo dynasty and History of Koryo written during Joseon dynasty.
The only remaining records about Old Choson are from History of the Three Kingdoms, Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms, and old Chinese records which all shortly mention Old Choson. According to legend, Old Choson was founded by a demigod who was the son of a god and a woman who transformed from a bear in 2333 BC. The capital city was Asadal(Pyongyang). Historians think that it was actually founded between 12-10th century BC, not 2333.
A forged "history book" called Hwandan Gogi has a full history of Old Choson including the names of all kings and it even has the history of kingdoms before Old Choson such as Hwan and Baedal. Most historians think that this book is pure fiction written by a modern writer though.

Amazing to think Jumong is Seven years old already . Looking back it does not age well unlike other dramas ,it is funny both the women who played his wives have gone on to bigger and better things while Song Il Guk has done nothing of merit since Kingdom Of The Winds (which i really like despite being a fantasy like Game Of Thrones ). Still the best bit or what i remember as the part i enjoyed most was when the phoney Shaman priestess is struck down during the ritual .
Interesting info about all the various historical records Truth .

He stated that he will never do historicals again, but people usually only like him in historicals though lol. Let's face it. What comes to your mind when you think of Song Il Guk? Emperor of the Sea and Jumong for me. I can't think of any modern dramas. Song Il Guk needs to change his mind and come back with a historical, because he's never gonna do good in any modern dramas again. Choi Su Jong is also returning to historical after failing in KBS President.

I still enjoy going back and watching episodes of Jumong. There were plenty of memorable scenes.
Regarding the actresses, I must say that I found Yesoya to be tedious, in fact one of the worst things about the show, but the actress who played her was later superb in Gyebaek.
I don't think Jumong ever loved Yesoya. He just felt guilty and tortured all those years because he was unable to save her and his mother and son. Then when Soseono left him, it really broke his heart.

Kyun Miri is supposedly a descendant of Kyun Hwon, the founder of Later Baekje dynasty. I'd say the possibility is higher than Kims, Parks, and Yi(Lees) since Kyun is a rare surname in Korea. The possibility of Wangs being descednants of Koryo royal family is pretty high too.
Jumong was horrible for me. Han dynasty soldieres dressed as some medieval European knights and Goguryeo soldiers dressed up as Roman Praetorian Guard lol. Not to mention all the World of Warcraft-like armors.
By the way, every founder of ancient Korean dynasties were born from a giant egg according to legend. Jumong(founder of Goguryeo), Park Hyukguhsae(founder of Shilla), and Kim Suro(founder of Gaya) were all born from eggs. Seok Talhae(pronounced Tarae), the 4th ruler of Shilla, was also born from an egg. Jumong was a god according to legend. His father was the King of Buyeo and son of the Heavens Hae Mosu and his mother was the river goddess Yu Hwa. During Jumong's exodus from Daeso's Buyeo, he was blocked by the river. The turtles and fishes created a bridge with their bodies to help Jumong go across the river, because he was the grandson of the Heavens and the river god Habaek. He was able to escape from Daeso's army and establish Goguryeo in the south as a result. I think this story is very similar to Moses' exodus from Egypt.
The founder of Old Choson was Wang Geom according to History of the Three Kingdoms, but historians think that Koryo made up his surname to have people believe that Wang family was descended from him.

Its been pointed out before that the early episodies of Jumong were the strongest and its pretty easy to see why. Of course there comes that time when the padding starts and it starts to kill the show altogether. I really have to say, the writers should have been better prepared in case of an extension; if TV ratings are high, naturally executives will ask for more. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but with this drama being a MBC celebration not to mention having an all star cast, they really should have seen it coming. EIther that or they didn't have the ability to make that many episodes.
I really like what they did with the mythology of Jumong, trying to transform a mystical myth into a more grounded setting. Sure its not the same myth, but I thought it worked fine. I thought the way they weaved around the myth was pretty clever, like Haemosu being a survivor of Gojoseon, yadda yadda yadda you name it. Of course the parts regarding the sorceress feels out of place though to be fair they probably did believe in supernatural stuff

Well, isn't this an interesting excavation. ;D I had pretty strong feelings about Jumong (the drama) in the first place, but what I mostly remember is that Song Il-gook simply wasn't up to the task. He was fine in the beginning, but really didn't carry the role of older man/hero very well.
Also, I felt complete sympathy for Daeso in his desire to kill that stupid bastard who always got a free pass no matter what he did and finally, I thought the guy who played Youngpo did an outstanding job--eventually. At first, he overplayed it, but the poor guy was given a one-note character and he did his best with it. Eventually, Youngpo and his transparent face became quite entertaining to me. I thought almost every supporting player did a great job. I thought Gyun Mi-ri was entirely wasted in a shrill, over-the-top character with no sympathetic notes whatsoever. (And I'm a big Gyun Mi-ri fan.) And, yes, Yesoya was insipid, but the actor did a good job with what she had. How was she supposed to compete with the Sosuhno character? Lessee, we have a woman who founded two whole kingdoms versus a dutiful and quiet wife. Right, equal fight. LOL...

I think Song Il Gook should reconsider as modern dramas aren't his thing especially the atrocity that is known as A Man called God. That drama had me in giggles whenever his codename 'Peter Pan' came up. "I am not Michael Steele, am Peter Pan..., Peter Pan I thought you died in Nicaragua?" I think his other drama Crime Squad also flopped. However I hear good things about Kimchi/Fermentation family so have you guys seen it?
Everytime I saw the Han's Iron Army it was such a disappointment and I couldn't really understand how everyone feared them. I mentally began replacing the armor with the knights armors in GoT.
It really sucks when foreign countries destroy one's history.

Crime Squad was a crime the big selling point was reuniting Guk and the girl who played Yesoya ; I cannot think of the actress name (Ye Soya role ) but she was the best thing in that tepid faux Goryeo Film Frozen Flower and again she was the best thing in Gyebaek .
Funny MBC said they wanted to do away with all the mythical stuff like the egg and concentrate on actual history ..ha ha ,Still we should remember this actually was part of a Trilogy spread between all 3 networks the other two being Kingdom Of The Winds (starring our bud Song Il Guk and written by the writers of Emperor Of The Sea) and Ja Myung Go ..looking at the trilogy all three are fantasy based but Kingdom Of The Winds is the best by a mile ,you just cannot beat epic tragedy .

....I cannot think of the actress name (Ye Soya role)... You're in luck, I have it here. It was Song Ji-hyo. BTW, there's something I've periodically thought about for a long time now. When I wrote the review, I received a booklet from the DVD set that included some background information. It asserted that the people in the drama lived in a period when people didn't have family names. Which, of course, makes sense, especially for characters such as Oi, Hyupbo, Mari, Sosuhno and her father Yuntabal, and even for King Kumwa, Yuhwa (Jumong's mom) and Yesoya. And it certainly fits in with practice in old-timey-western land (Europe etc. lol). However, it was clear to me for instance that the Chinese/Han definitely had modern family names which the translators simply blended in (Yangseolran, Daeso's wife, and her father, Yangjung, were obviously Yang so_and_so). Every cast listing I've seen attempts to break up ALL the names into modern equivalents which seems kind of wrong. It occurred to me that modern names like "Ye" and "Hae" might have grown out of people attempting to connect themselves with famous ancestors, whether real or legendary, and even if those connections were somewhat questionable. Any thoughts on that?

It would been interesting to see them going with the more controversial theory of Yuri not being his son but an usurper who stole the throne from him and ruled for several generations until Taejo of Goguryeo restored the throne to the Go family. Which might also explain Sosono's forceful departure from Goguryeo. This theory stems from the fact that starting with Yuri and ending before Taejo all the kings had the surname of Hae, not Go.
Thinking about it it's too much narrative cluttering for Jumong as it is ultimately a story of triumph; maybe they can work from that controversial template for a potential Taejo drama.

What is the story behind Yuri assassinating Jumong and seizing the throne as Truth indicated . Even if Yuri was an usurper was he Ye Soya's son .
The early episodes of KOTW show that Yuri's hold on the throne was both slim and trouble filled ,at the end of KOTW Daemusin Muhyeol has become more a hardened ruler and in Jamyungo he is a tyrant and despot .
