You're right, florel! It was West Palace that I saw--I didn't know that there were two programs so closely titled! The evil woman who drove the king to ruin was his concubine who, in the end, was murdered by common people. Actually, that sounds like "Chang Nok Soo"...i'll have to check my notes somewhere...

The evil woman who drove the king to ruin was his concubine who, in the end, was murdered by common people. Actually, that sounds like "Chang Nok Soo"...i'll have to check my notes somewhere... Historically both Lady Kim Gae-Shi and Chang Nok-Soo were beheaded. A friend of mine from Korea, who viewed "West Palace (1995)" and "King's woman (2003)", told me that Lady Kim was killed by common people in the former and beheaded in the latter. I didn't watch both of them and I don't remember how exactly she died in the earlier version. (I only know she was killed anyway. ) I never viewed "Chang Nok-Soo". Please confirm details for us if you have time.

"The 500 years of Chosun Dynasty"? So I'm guessing the dramas went until the 19th century, right? Yes, Skinz, the title of the last episode "Daewongun" refers to Yi Ha-Eung, Prince Heung-Seon (1820-1898). He was father of King Kojong (1852-1919, reigned between 1863-1907). I don't know if it ended with the death of Daewongun or with the fall of Chosun dynasty. I found more info of the last episode. It covers from the reign of King Cheol-jong (1849-1863) to Daehan Empire (aka Korea Empire, 1897-1910). So "500 Years Series" is the complete official history of Chosun dynasty from its foundation in 1392 to its end in 1910. It was a long series aired from 1983 to 1990.

15) Oh, Heaven ! (Haneul-ah haneul-ah, KBS, 1988-1989)- producer : Ahn Young-Dong - writer : Im Chung - 18th century. - About tragic life of Crown Prince Sado (aka Crown Prince Jang-huhn, 1735-1762) and his wife Lady Hyegyong (1735-1815). Prince Sado was killed by his father, King Yong-jo (1724-1776), in the midst of political conflicts between confucian factions. (Cf. King Young-jo was a half-brother of King Kyung-jong, son of Chang Hui-bin.) - Chung Bo-Suk (King Gong-min in "Shin Don") was featured as Prince Sado and Ha Hui-Ra as Lady Hyegyong. - About Prince Sado : Epitaph Dedicated to Tragic Prince Sado Bared16) The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong (Hanjungnok, MBC, 1988-1989)- producers : Lee Byung-Hoon - writer : Shin Bong-Seung - Nineth episode of "500 Years of Chosun Dynasty". - 18th century. - "The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong (Hanjungnok)" is an autobiography of Princess Hyegyong, in which she tells about the murder of his husband, Crown Prince Sado. This famous court literature is translated in English. For more info on the English version of the book in IYSS Tangent board : IYSS Fan Book Thread- KBS and MBC aired again historical dramas at the same moment with the same material of the same period. Another duel ? - Choi Su-Jong (Wang Guhn in "EWG" and Jang Bogo in "Hae-Shin") played the role of Prince Sado. It was his first historical drama. I didn't view this drama, so I don't know who played Princess Hyegyong and how terrible Choi Su-Jong was in his first historical role. - funny feature : Choi Su-Jong (Prince Sado in MBC) and Ha Hui-Ra (Lady Hyegyong in KBS) got married in 1993. Choi Su-Jong and Ha Hui-Ra - another interesting feature : Choi Jin-Shil (War of Roses aka Rosy Life) played a minor role in this drama. She was Lady Mun Sook-won, concubine of King Yong-jo, who hated Prince Sado. Before she became a top star, Choi Jin-Shil started her career with minor roles in historical dramas. It was a surprising discovery to me. lol Choi Jin-Shil

17) Pa Mun (MBC, 1989)- producer : Lee Byung-Hoon - writer : Shin Bong-Seung - Tenth episode of "500 Years of Chosun Dynasty". - Late 18th and early 19th century, during the reigns of King Jeong-jo (1776-1800) and of his son, King Soon-jo (1800-1834). - Probably the worst and the least popular episode of the 500 series. - According to the Korean drama data base, it's about confucian scholars of Shil-hak (pragmatical learning) School and about first Korean catholics. What does signify "Pa Mun" ? The excommunication (of pragmatical confucian scholars) ? The metaphoric sense of the ripple as repercussions (of new ideas)? Is there anyone who knows about this drama ? 18) Pa Chun Mu (literally signifying "Dance of Sky Breaking", KBS, 1990)- producer : Ahn Young-Dong - writer : Lee Hwan-Kyung - original novel : Yu Joo-Hyun, "Pa Chun Mu" - Mid 15th century. - About King Sejo's Coup in 1453 and his reign (1455-1468). - I occasionally viewed this drama, but I was not very interested in it despite of Yu Dong-Geun (King Sejo)'s brilliant acting. In this drama, I didn't find remarkable difference from "Seol Jung Mae" of Shin Bong-Seung (1984, MBC). I don't even remember who played the role of Han Myung-Hoe. - Yu Dong-Geun received the KBS Best Actor Award in 1990 with his role of King Sejo in "Pa Chun Mu". - Yu Dong-Geun is husband of Jeon In-Hwa (Chang Hui-bin in "Queen In-hyun"). They got married in 1989. 19) Daewongun (MBC, 1990)- producer : Lee Byung-Hoon - writer : Shin Bong-Seung - Eleventh and last episode of "500 Years of Chosun Dynasty". - 1849-1910, from the reign of King Cheol-jong to the fall of Chosun dynasty. - About this drama, I only heard that Choi Su-Jong played King Cheol-jong, so called the woodcutter prince of Kang-hwa Island. King Cheol-jong (born in 1831, reigned between 1849-1863) was a great grandson of Prince Sado and a grandson of Prince Eun-uhn, brother of King Jeong-jo. It was Choi's second historical role. It is said that he was much better as the woodcutter prince than as the Crown Prince Sado.

JP : It's a honour for me if you let me "publish" my posting (or a part of it) on your web site. I know it. It's a great site ! I also need time to finish this list. It's very long. LOL
SS : Internet helps me to confirm my instable memory and to get infos about historical dramas I didn't view. I don't hate Choi Su-Jong even though I'm not a fan of him. ;D

20) Dong Ui Bo Gam (MBC, 1991)
- producer : Yi Jae-Gap - writer : Yi Sang-Hyun - original novel : Lee Eun-Sung, "Dong Ui Bo Gam".
- circa 1550-1615. - Biographical drama of Huh Jun (1546-1615), a royal physician of King Sunjo and author of "Dong Ui Bo Gam", famous medical encyclopaedia.
- It seems that Suh In-Suk (Yi Ui-Bang in "AOW") was featured as Huh Jun.
- MBC made another Huh Jun drama in 1999 ("Huh Jun") which became more famous.
21) Wang Do (The Royal Way, KBS, 1991)
- producer : Kim Jae-Hyung - writer : Kim Hang-Myung - original novel : Yu Hyun-Jong, "Wang Do"
- About Hong Guk-Young (1748-1781), a powerful courtier in the reign of King Jeong-jo (1776-1800).
- It seems that Kim Young-Chul (Gung Ye in "EWG") played the role of Hong Guk-Young.
22) Chronicles of Three Kingdoms (Sam Guk Ki, KBS, 1992-1993)
- producers : Choi Sang-Sik, Ahn Young-Dong - writers : Yu Hyun-Jong, Lee Sang-Jun
- 7th century, in the end of Three Kingdoms period. - First huge scale TV drama set in the Antiquity. But, personally, I thought it was a disappointing production.
casting
- Kim Yu Shin (Shilla) : Suh In-Suk (Yi Ui-Bang in "AOW") - Gye Baek (Baekche) : Yu Dong-Geun (King Sejo in "Pa Chun Mu") - Yeon Gae So Mun (Koguryo) : Cho Kyung-Hwan (Namgung Du in "IYSS")

Thanks, Oh darling ;D, for the picture infos. Hong Rina is very cute. I know this actress. She played Queen In-mok (second spouse of King Sunjo) in "The Queen of West Palace" aired in 1982. She is aged now. (And demoted to a Sang Gung Lady from the Queen LOL.) It's impressive to find that the Chinese are selling Prince Sado drama. I don't know it's also available in Korea. I doubt of it.

23) Dawn (Muhndong, KBS, 1993-1994) - producers : Lee Nok-Young, Kim Jong-Seon - writer : Kim Hang-Myung - original novel : Hong Sung-Won, "Muhn Dong" - circa 1894-1919 (from Donghak Peasant War to Samil Independence Movement) 24) Bird, bird, blue bird (Saeya, saeya, parangsaeya, KBS, 1994)- producer : Lee Eun-Kyu - writer : Hong Ki-Seon - Special drama for the Centennial of Donghak Peasant War (1894). - aired between 7th March 1994 - 29th March 1994. - Donghak Peasant Revolution (aka Donghak Peasant War, Donghak Rebellion or the Peasant War of Gap-oh year) in Wikipedia(* Attention : IMO, "The Context of the revolt" in the Wiki article is not well written. It's confusingly organized from chronological aspect. And it tells nothing about internal social reason of the rebellion. It was a revolt against feudal system ant that's why it's also called as "Donghak Peasant Revolution" by some historians. It was also a war of Donghak peasants against foreign imperialist forces. The wiki article only gives long comments about influences of foreign powers on Chosunese government and factional feuds between the aristocrat Yang-ban class.) - Donghak War memorial in Hwangryong bettlefield (in Jang-seong, Cholla province) - number of war victims : 300,000-400,000
