Shindon[/b], MBC's new historical drama set in 14th century Koryo kingdom.
I think many American fans on this Chicago board are already familiar with Korean historical dramas set in Koryo period such as "Emperor Wang Guhn" "Dawn of Empire" and "Age of Warriors", right?
Here is another Korean historical drama set in Koryo. This time, it is 14th century Koryo kingdom. (Koryo was degraded from empire to kingdom after being conquered by Mongol's Kublai Khan in early 13th century) This period is about 150 years after the death of Choi Cung-hun (from AOW), and about 200 years before the birth of Yi Sun-shin (from IYSS). ;D

Shindon (?~1371) / Actor Son Chang-Min
Shindon is a famous Buddhist monk and social reformist. He has been criticized as a symbol of wicked and fallen Buddhist monks in Korea especially by Confucian scholars who founded Confucian Chosun dynasty after destroying Buddhist Koryo dynatsy. This MBC drama is intended to reevaluate Shindon without any confucian prejudice.
King Gongmin (1330~1374) / Actor Jung Bo-Seok
He may be one of the greatest kings of Koryo dynasty. When he was a little boy, he was taken hostage by the Mongol empire and was forced to marry a Mongolian princess named Botapsili. (aka. Princess Noguk in Korean) Although it was a marrige of convenience, they fell in love with each other. After returning to Koryo from Mongol, King Gongmin became a great reformer with the help of his loyal subordinate (Monk Shindon) and his wise queen (Princess Noguk), but (Spoiler alert!) after the death of his wife, the king gradullay went mad.
Mongolian Princess Noguk (aka. Botapsili, ?~1365)/ Actress Seo Ji-Hye
She was the only one King Gongmin really loved throughout his life. The Mongolian princess really loved Koryo like her motherland, and helped her husband to change the rotten Koryo society. She also protected him from the intervention of the Mongol empire. However (Spoiler alert!) she died of hard labor (childbirth). King Gongmin couldn't love any woman beside her, so... (I don't know if this drama will depict the fact, but...) according to historical documents, he became a bisexual after her death and was finally killed by the Royal guards (=his male concubines).
Empress Ki (?~?) / Actress Kim Hye-Ri
The last empress of the Mongol empire. She was a Koryo (Korean) woman who was sent to Mongol as a maid (or slave) but loved by the Mongolian emperor and became his empress. The empress and her brothers became a hotbed of corruption in Koryo society, so King Gongmin had to fight with her. (Kim Hye-Ri is the actress who played the emperess killed by her husband (Gung-ye) in "Emperor Wang Guhn" )
