Hey, guys, I thought this was an interesting discussion in light of how Dae Jang-geum has been and gone and taken our hearts with it. - Bo
I'm very disappointed with KBC's decision to give Dae Jang Geum Friday's and Saturday's at 8pm. I think Pearl Necklace, Summer Scent or Damo would have been better for that timeslot and would attract a wider range of viewers. If KBC wanted to give a drama that's set in the past in that timeslot, why not give Damo or Jang Hee Bin? Both of those dramas were extremely popular and got very good ratings in Korea, especially Jang Hee Bin which was also given in China and Taiwan. I was really surprised that KBC gave Pearl Necklace and Jang Hee Bin such a bad timeslot. It's a shame because I think both of those dramas deserve a better timeslot than 10am.

I'm very disappointed with KBC's decision to give Dae Jang Geum Friday's and Saturday's at 8pm. I think Pearl Necklace, Summer Scent or Damo would have been better for that timeslot. I haven’t been following Pearl Necklace too closely (it’s currently running in Los Angeles, but it’s without English subtitles, so I don’t watch it that religiously) and I agree that “Damo” would have been a great choice, but “Summer Scent” concluded in L.A. a few weeks ago, and I thought it was a real dud. It was a great concept (boy loses girl in tragic accident, another girl gets a heart transplant from the dead girl, and in an chance meeting years later -- the girl with the transplanted heart is inexplicably drawn towards him. . . ). But, “Summer Scent” just went on, and on, and on . . . Way too many episodes, with way too little story to fill all that time. It was another one of those dramas where we were all screaming “Just end it now, will you?” Too bad, had it been cut down to about one-half the number of episodes, it could have been a pretty good romantic drama. Just my two cents -- Mikey

I am excited to start watching Dae Jang Geum. I saw the advertisment for it but did not catch when the start date will be. Did anyone else notice? It's not listed on the KBC schedule yet. I did not see the ad for Jang Hee Bin. When will this start and what day will this be aired???

Thanks Knov1 for the info. I'm glad I didn't miss the beginning of Dae Jang Geum. Thanks also for the heads up on no subtitles for Jang Hee Bin. I would not be able to follow along without them.

I, too, was disappointed that there is going to be a historical drama on in that timeslot. I am used to that being my look at modern Korea, which I find fascinating. (My interests are more anthropological than historical.) I comfort myself with the thought that it's about a woman physician and not more martial/historical stuff like Age of Warriors, in which I'm not interested at all.

But will Dae Jang Geum be rebroadcast on the weekends? I was sort of assuming it would be on the same schedule as Bodyguard, which would mean that episode 1 would be on right now (9:15 AM Saturday), but it's not. There is some contemporary drama, not subtitled, that I'm not familiar with. What is that? Have I missed ep. 1 of DJG? Etc.

humblestudent, I turned it on last night expecting to see the 1st episode of Dae Jang Geum but it was probably the same contemporary one you saw this morning. Perhaps it will air after the holidays so everyone can catch the first episode. If thats true, that would be great and very kind of the station to think that. But thats just an assumption I could be totally wrong about that and that they changed their mind and decided to air a contemporary one and not have it subtitled.

They had a screen before that drama started that said "thank you for watching bodyguard. we hoped you enjoyed it, etc. the next drama will be [insert title] which will air on 12/26"
So it won't be starting until next week.

“Summer Scent” concluded in L.A. a few weeks ago, and I thought it was a real dud. I'm hesitant to talk about Summer Scent because it might just be the drama that KBC airs after Wife ends. It'll probably be that or another KBS drama (I can't recall the name of it right now though .. Sangduya something or whatever) which I didn't really like. Anyways, I will admit though that I have some issues with the storyline of Summer Scent but I still think it would attract a wider range of viewers than Dae Jang Geum. As far as episodes, they just made it the same length as the autumn and winter dramas. I think Pearl Necklace would've been the perfect (contemporary) drama for that timeslot. Again, If KBC had their hearts set on giving a "historical" drama at 8pm then Jang Hee Bin or Damo would've been better choices. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Dae Jang Geum is a bad drama. I just think that there are better dramas for that timeslot. Regarding Dae Jang Geum, it was supposed to start airing this weekend but like Galacticchick said the first episode will air on Friday 12/26 at 8pm.

Well. Dae Jang Geum has Kyun Mi-ree in it, so I know I will be watching it, since I am a big fan of her.
I saw the first episode of 'Pearl Necklace', and thought it looked pretty good. I recorded the second ep, but haven't had the chance to watch it yet.
I have found that 'lighter' romantic dramas and action shows are often enjoyable even without subtitles, whereas 'dramatic' shows just leave me bewildered without them. An example of this would be 'Like Father, Unlike Son', which I had to abandon with no clue as to what was going on.
Conversely, I regularly watched 'Emperor Wang Guhn' without subtitles, but was struck by how much I misunderstood when I saw the subtitled version months later.

I had a few questions about scheduling and was wondering are they going to be showing a historical drama in the Friday, Saturday time slot? Also is the historical drama that shows on Monday, Tuesday when that drama ends will it still be a historical or are they going to change it to some modern day stuff? And I was wondering when pearl necklace would be showing? My cousin in Korea mailed the first 10 episodes and it is really good.

I'm hesitant to talk about Summer Scent because it might just be the drama that KBC airs after Wife ends. Just to clarify things (no offence taken) the information I earlier revealed about “Summer Scent” is all pretty much disclosed in episode #1 – so there really weren’t any spoilers there to get worried about. I think it is likely that another historical drama will replace 'Age of Warriors' on Monday and Tuesday, when it finishes its run, as it was preceded by 'The Dawn of the Empire' and 'Emperor Wang Guhn' in that time slot.
Dae Jang Geum is a historical drama that will be running on Friday and Saturday evenings. Other than the KTE subtitled historical dramas that have been airing on Monday and Tuesday for a few years, historical dramas do not seem to be a fixture on KBC, but do appear from time to time. 'Song Do' was one I liked, until the lack of subtitles rendered me totally lost. I believe Michael Han is doing most, if not all, of the subtitling for the evening shows that air from Wednesday to Saturday, and we should all thank him for the job he's doing, in addition to all the other stuff he does, like maintain the KBC Web site.
'Pearl Necklace' airs Monday and Tuesday at 10:00 AM, I believe, without subtitles. It started last week, so episode three would have aired this morning.

Thanks soju for the information and I didn't even know that they started airing pearl necklace here in the states. Well I know this is going off the subject but didn't anybody see Whasango? I heard they were showing it on tv but with dubbed voice overs. Just wondering.......
