One thing I noticed about "Damo" (as I watched the non-subtitled episode 7 here in Los Angeles last night) is their use of the Hong Kong-style special effects (like the kind we saw in the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") where the characters do things like fly through the air and swordfight in the trees.
When they did a bit of this in "The Age of Warriors" a while back, I was really irritated. I think this kind of thing has no place in a serious historical drama. But, while I'm not that crazy about them, these special effects can work okay in a fantasy drama that doesn't pretend to be historically accurate.
Even so, I kind of wish “Damo” had taken the serious route, since I like strong female characterizations, and this series is loaded with strong female characters. I don’t need to see the heroine fly through the trees to know that she’s a formidable adversary. But, I guess these special effects are wildly popular with the general public, so who am I to gripe? It’s just that, for me, the novelty of these special effects has started to wear thin.
But I’ll keep watching. “Damo” has its good points. If only it had subtitles!

Well that's one of the reasons why I don't really consider Damo a historical drama. To me it's a fantasy drama. The characters in the drama also aren't real. They're based on people that might have existed at that time though. The special effects thing doesn't really bother me. I watch a lot of martial arts films and anime so I'm used to 'fantasy' type of stuff. I do agree though that special effects don't really have a place in an actual historical drama.
Also, I just found out this past weekend that there's going to be a movie version of Damo.
