the episode of oprah was about life in different coutries. she did a peice about south korea and how the women over there are getting plastic surgery to their eyelids to make them less narrower. they are also getting some type of surgery to their legs to give their legs a slimmer appearence.
they get all of this done to have a less "asian" look and more of a european look.

I did hear about Asian women getting the nerves to their calf muscles cut so that they would atrophy. I guess they thought their calves were fat or something.

I watched that show too! How can Korean women think their calves are fat when most of them are like a size 4? I'm so self-conscious because I think my legs are too skinny! Aigu!

I may be self conscious about how I look, but cutting nerves is just going a bit too far. It's like botox but more permanent and I've heard too many horror stories about how playing around with your nerves will make you disfigured - except with this it could make them unable to walk.

I did hear about Asian women getting the nerves to their calf muscles cut.... Wait a sec! Isn't that what the doctor did in Madame Bovary, with the clubfoot boy, and killed him? Eugh. Nuts, nuts, nuts. Bo

I don't remember Mme. Bovary at all, but I think that the surgical treatment for clubfoot involves cutting (or somehow loosening?) ligaments, rather than nerves, to make the foot drop down into a more forward position. Then a cast has to be worn for a long time. Mind you, I'm probably describing an out of date treatment anyway.
To do anything like that just for looks is horrible.

I also remember seeing this thing on the National Geographic Channel that in China there is this secret surgery that is done to have your legs stretched out so you can be taller. People, especially men, are discriminated against if they are too short. They somehow cut your muscles and ligaments and then apply this stone age device that makes them stretch out. Ouch!
