5 hours! Wow, that would be an experience. I agree, dom, US distributors really screw up overseas films, both with cutting and dubbing. It is because of the famous American inability to read subtitles, and also our short attention spans. IHI. I rented the DVD of Shower (China) OOPS I mean Shaolin Soccer (Hong Kong) silly me--which is really good, BTW, I don't know if it's "great"--and the English-dubbed version was different enough from the original version to change the whole feel of the thing and even the ending, and not for the better. For instance, there's a scene where an odd little street singer sings a weird folk-song and then everyone starts dancing to it, but in the English version, they cut out half of what was happening and had him singing Disco Inferno or something stupid like that. They put English "rock" music on the whole movie, when the original music served it much better. I've never understood why people have so much trouble with subtitles. It doesn't take long to develop the skill of reading them and watching the action at the same time, and with dubbing, you lose the whole skill of the original actor who is conveying much more feeling and nuance because they're actually IN the scene.
That is my rant for today. Thank you for listening. IHI.
I guess I shouldn't be TOO hard on our subtitle-phobic public, it seems that overseas everyone dubs over foreign voices, too. Seems like the same voiceover people, over and over, too, doesn't it. I think there's one French guy in all of France doing voices for "bad guy" and another who does "father" etc. etc. Snort.

I Have seen RED CLIFF and ill say this best thing Woo has done in about 18 years but thats nothing to shout about either . I Have read Romance /3/Kingdoms (that was a struggle with such a cast of characters )and even Woo's film leaves you a bit confused . Why do they all hate Cau Cau ?. Who is Sun Quan ?. So what im saying is even being familiar with the story there is so much that would confuse the every day movie fan as Woo seems to assume the audience will already know what's going on . I have only seen the 140 min print of the Cantonese version ,its big budget ,a visual treat but it all seems to be a primer for the second film which will open in HK in Jan . There is no time for any character development, the three heroes which dominate the book are relegated to supporting characters . The main plot is the alliance of Lu Bei and Sun Quan against Cau Cau and of course it all builds to end suddenly (leave us gasping for pt 2 ). I Cannot imagine how this film will be paired down to a 2 and a half hour version without losing so much ,its sickening to contemplate Of course the U.S Version being released in Jan makes it unable to get any Oscar nods and thats sad because it will be so much better than any crap they will nominate .

In China mega hit ,also in Korea and Japan . In a way i kind of prefer the ROMANCE OF THE 3 KINGDOMS RESURRECTION OF THE DRAGON with Andy Lau /Sammo Hung and Maggie Q ,although covering near the end of the book it just had more story and character development .

I still do not see where Three Kingdom's connects with this ? The only mention of Three Kingdoms has been in reference to Samguk Sagi/Yusa ,even the scene where UI Bang ,Yi Ko and Che Won take a vow no mention of ROTTK .of course we have seen a couple of characters referenced as being like Lu Bei and Gaung Yu but thats it ,besides Romance was not even written until the 15th century .

Actually did not know where to put it (oh should not have said that !) anyway its a very minor quibble and does nothing to take away from the drama one way or the other .

AH! You are talking about YOUR post--LOL. You're right--"where to put it" (hilarity ensues) would be difficult.
