I thought the relationship Ui-bang and The Archfiend had with their wives produced some humorous moments in AOW that is sorely missed. Ui-bang argued with his wife a few times in the show where they would trade zingers with each other. And the Archfiend's wife as we all know was something else. First she did that con job with that "social club" that got the Archfiend and Ui-bang in hot water (that was really funny), then she would always embarass him in front of his soldiers by falling to the ground and crying in front of him. It was great to see the reaction of everyone when that happened, as tough as these guys were they would just look away sheepishly and clear their throats. I thought when Choi Bu and Ja-sun joined up with Ui-min they would react more strongly to his wife acting like that, since he was the Imperial Dragon in their eyes...but even they were like, uh-uh I ain't getting in middle of this mess even if you are the Imperial Dragon! ;D

i had forgotten all about yi ui bang and his wife sparring with each other. now the archfiend and his wife, that relationship is where the word dysfunctional came from ;D she was a piece of work. and how about when she was living on the estate of yi ui bang, and those two wives together, one refined and one NOT. but they made it work after a while. it was hilarious to see how all these tough guys reacted to the archfiend's wife, and even how he did most of the time....he would be so embarrassed and would want to shut her up, and she would continue to carry on as if life itself depended on it.

Was her name EVER mentioned on the show? Yes, mace windu, she was quite a spectacle. I always found the scenes where she carried on comical as well as sad. By the way, in Ep. 129 - when she confronts the crowd after Ui-min's death - didn't she look younger and much prettier than her recent self? She had been aging/graying on the show, but in that Ep. her hair looked dark again. And her face was so young and double beautiful, I thought. Also, sometimes I think the women look prettier when they are not wearing all their hair ornaments.

I noticed her youthfulness also. I think this was a real character/continuity issue. It's almost as if they rushed the actress through wardrobe and makeup to do the scene. Not only was she "unaged" her peasant costume showed no particular signs of wear and tear from her banishment and the obvious mental deterioration which had resulted.
Otherwise, I thought the scene was quite moving even though the incongruity of her appearance was a distraction.

I'm glad you mentioned this about the actress that plays the Archfiend's wife. In Hawaii we are lucky to get "Encore Dramas" in which the station shows older dramas that the station considers classics. A few weeks ago they showed a drama called "Kuk Hee" which was set in WWII-post Korean War times. This actress starred as a woman who was a famous singer in Korea called Elena and she was absolutely *gorgeous* in this show. She actually did look good in the flashback of how she got paired up with the Archfiend too, but I guess in this show the producers mostly wanted to make her look and act more like an old hen! I was able to see a behind-the-scenes segment on AOW as well and they showed the actresses playing Archfiend's wife and Bu-yong sitting together on the set. I don't understand Korean but you can tell that their real personalities match their characters--Archfiend's wife is more outgoing while the Bu-yong is a little quiet and shy. If I remember correctly I think the last "confrontation" between Archfiend and his wife was when he caught her drinking alone. They were arguing it up yet again and she almost got the last word but Archfiend left by saying something like "Drinking in broad daylight...hmph!" ;D

You don't think the show could have made her look younger and unshabby for some symbolic reason - like her family was taken away and now she will no longer be a part of their earthly tribulations that stressed her out. I do sound crazy, I know. But it's puzzling, and I'd hate to think that they rushed her through make-up for that particular moving scene, but you're probably right, generaldu.

Yeah, I agree completely, mace. She was very pretty in the early Archfiend flashback scenes - after that she began to be fashioned into an old hen who cackles - a perfect term, mace. With acting like an old hen then came looking like an old hen. I noticed the same with Aran. In behind the scenes interiews she is very pretty, but playing Aran on the show she looks disagreeable to me - because her character is so distasteful. Acting like can become looks like. That's why I think so many on the board went on about how ugly she is, but she's not ugly in real life. P.S. Sorry, mace - I didn't realize you hadn't seen Ep. 129 yet, but turns out you're just like me in not minding spoilers.

I think that the real actors hate eachother in real life too. he ifrst thing i realised about Lady Yi was that she was Kwon Hyun's Empess in EWG. Wow, she was a b****. {do i have to keep puting in *s instead of letters?} Then she plays again as Suh In Suk's wife. Maybe she is married to Suh In Suk?

Your interpretation is plausible and interesting but the scene should have contained some stylistic clues to tip us off. It's a head scratcher. If we broaden our interpretations to include the silly, perhaps the actress and her agent demanded that in her last scene she be shown in her true age and appearance to remind other casting directors that she's not over the hill.

Ha Ha, generaldu - that thought had crossed my mind. Or perhaps the show's makers just decided for the scene that they would like the young Archfiend wife version - to show the freshness of youth in the midst of terrible pain.

OK I just saw 129 last night...did the Archfiend's wife find the fountain of youth while she was across the river, or did she go to a good salon in the imperial city for hair coloring? ;D That was a little too much, but then again I thought they made that actresses' hair REALLY gray at one point. Interesting that the Chois did not kill her, are they beginning to see the human side of the Archfiend? Sad scene, but at least she got some parting shots in, as did Ji-soon. Can't wait for 130 in about 4 hours...

i would have been more surprised if it had been choong hon. now don't go nuts everybody, he just doesn't seem to have a lot of feelings one way or another (that he outwardly shows) except for lotus. whereas choong su is full of all kinds of strong emotions, apparently even a little compassion once in a while.
