choi bu was returning to the palace after he had returned chang bi to her home. after he had given his horse to the stable attendant, he pulled the little square of paper out of his armor and unfolded it. he looked at it fondly as he walked back to his home. he couldn't believe he was actually learning to read - and it was all because of her. he loved her for the fact that she inspired a desire in him to be a better man. carefully refolding the paper, he tucked it back inside his chestplate. he needed some rest. he was helping to train the imperial army the next morning.
chang bi was about to go to sleep when her uncle asked to speak with her. she walked over to him and sat down. "what did you want to talk about, uncle?" she asked him fondly.
clearing his throat, du asked her, "what is the nature of your relationship with superior general choi bu?"
she looked embarrassed at having been found out by her uncle, but she answered him honestly. "he loves me and i think i love him, uncle." when she saw a worried look on her uncle's face, she was quick to attempt to reassure him. "oh, don't worry, he's been so respectful of me! i only started spending time with him because he told me he wanted to learn to read and write. so, i've been teaching him."
"really?" her uncle said. well, he could appreciate that sentiment, certainly but choi bu had never struck him as the type to be concerned with such things. "how do you know that his feelings are genuine?" she smiled and told him of how she had come to know of his feelings. at first du found the story to be absolutely unbelievable. such an act seemed contrary to choi's nature. but when he saw his niece's glowing face, he knew she wasn't lying to him. he wondered if she knew about ji soon.

The next morning, choi bu was up early in preparation for the day's training. as the men were being organized into groups, Ji soon, also there to aid in the training approached him and asked, "sang jang goon, would you care to spar with me?" the men who were nearest them murmured with approval - it should be an interesting fight.
choi thought this was a bit odd as ji soon had never before asked to spar with him. but he figured why not, so he agreed to his challenge.

word spread around the training field that the two generals were going to engage in a friendly sparring match. the men gathered around forming a circle around choi bu and ji soon. ji soon rushed choi unexpectedly and delivered a hard kick to his chest. choi staggered backwards, not expecting that the prince would strike so hard. "yi jang goon" he said in a confused tone, "what is the meaning of this?"
ji soon assumed a defensive stance. "this is just training" he replied. "we should be prepared for even the strongest of enemies."
Choi coughed to clear his throat and then stood up. He hadn't quite reached a completely standing position when ji soon rushed him again. sweeping choi off his feet, the superior general landed on his back. the men began to mutter amongst themselves. why was general yi not giving choi a fair amount of time to defend himself? ji soon stood over choi and looked down at him. in a voice low enough that only choi could hear, he asked him, "does it make you happy to be with chang bi?"

choi's eyes widened as he understood what the fight was really about. "yi jang goon" he started to say, but he was cut off when ji soon delivered a viscious kick to his side. the men began to mutter. it was unlike the general to kick an opponent who was down. choi staggered to his feet and told ji soon, "yi jang goon, this is not the proper conduct for the crown prince." ji soon responded by rushing him again and punching him as hard as he could.
choi reeled back a few steps. when he had found his footing again, he rubbed his jaw and spat some of the blood pooling in his mouth on the ground. everyone watching was now absolutely silent. Though internally he was furious with ji soon, his voice was calm as he said, "yi jang goon, i will not fight you like this." he lowered his arms to his sides in an obvious gesture of nonviolence.

angered by the superior general's refusal to fight, ji soon grabbed choi by his top and threw him to the ground. both men began rolling around in the dirt. Choi attempted to pry ji soon off himself but in the scuffle, the momento that he kept in his chest fell out of his shirt. distracted he reached for it, afraid that it would be blown away by the wind. ji soon took advantage of his inattention to deliver a hard punch straight down onto his abdomen. choi went momentarily limp, the wind knocked out of him. ji soon went over to see what was so important for the general to retrieve. Choi was trying to regain his breath when he saw ji soon unfold the paper and read it

Choi was struggling to get up. Ji soon, his eyes blazing, crumpled the piece of paper in his hand. Seeing this, choi forced himself on his feet. he saw ji soon extend his fist with the crushed paper inside. "if you want this back, sang jang goon", he informed, "you will have to fight me for it." Choi began to feel a genuine rage about to boil over
