Now, let's talk about So Ji-sub, who plays so effectively the role of the gangster totally devoted to Sunwoo(KHJ). Many industry insiders predict that So Ji-sub, along with Song Seung-heon("Autumn in My Heart" and "Summer Scent"), will be Korea's next superstar in the mold of Bae Yong-joon and Jang Dong-gun(Korea's number-one male actor who has starred in "All about Eve" and many hit movies.)
So Ji-sub was a relatively unknown actor when he was cast for the role but as the drama progressed his popularity skyrocked. So much so that "Glass Slippers's" producers was put in a dilemma and (I believe) was compelled to change the original script considerably. There is a really surprising ending nobody expected.
After the drama, SJS went on to star in two popular dramas: "What Happened in Bali?" and "I Am Sorry, I Love You," which along with "Glass Slippers" have brought him Asia-wide fame. He is now serving military duty in a district office in Seoul, and it was reported recently that scores of Japanese and Chinese female fans are gathered every moring near the entrance of his office just to see him.

Isn't Han Jae-suk the actor who was originally cast for the role of Yummum in the 'Emperor of the Sea' but had to leave the set to fulfill his military duty belatedly, giving a major opportunity to Song Il-gook?

Yes, you are right. Han Jae-suk lost probably the greatest role in his career when he had to leave for his military service. After finishing "The Emperor of the Sea" Song went on to star in "Jumong," and now he is one of the major stars in Korea.
Speaking of Song Il-gook and "The Emperor of the Sea," I have a big gripe against KBS in connection with them. Jang Bo-go is one of the greatest heroes in Korean history, but KBS lost its mind because of Song's surging popularity, and let him have have better scenes than the drama's main lead Choi Su-jong. I was expecting Jang Bo-go(Choi) to meet magnificent death a la Kirk Douglas(in "The Vikings") but he died rather shabbily and it was Song who died magnificent death.
If you are an American, can you really love a drama/movie/play about Abraham Lincoln, in which there is a love triangle involving him and Edwin Booth(Lincoln's assassin, in case you didn't know) and a lady, and in which Lincoln meets a shabby death while Booth meets magnificent death?

But I think Song Il Guk is a really good actor, especially in Jumong... I think he really "fits" his role with the charismatic image

I was not talking about "Jumong" or Song Il-gook's acting ability. I was talking about how KBS trashed Jang Bo-go, one of the most magnificent heroes in Korean histrory.

Hey, Kiparang. I followed this thread from the beginning and enjoyed your mostly informative, and often entertaining posts. But I have felt that you have (however mild) distain for Lee Young-ae or for her acting or for both.
Why is it that when everybody (well, nearly everybody) admires LYA and her acting?

Yes, I agree. This thread is mildly addictive. I don't think that Kiparang's said anything negative about LYA but I can be wrong. I think it's entirely within the realm of possibilty that there are people who love DJG without loving LYA. I can absolutely see how it's possible that someone may feel indifferent about her, yep. But anyway, I too am interested in Kiparang's answer to your query.

Hi Christine. You wonder why many people admire LYA's acting skills? Well.. maybe it is because she is a great actress? LOL... i dont know of anyone who watched DJG and did not like LYA (yet)

I too agree with you, Christine and lifan. Kiparang's posts are mostly informative, quite often entertaining, and mildly addictive. And he seems to know something about Lee Young-ae that he is rather reluctant to divulge.
I too am interested in his answer to Christine's question.

Djanggum, do you have problem understanding English? I didn't wonder about LYA's popularity. I wondered about Kiparang's (seeming) distain for LYA. And Lifan didn't seem to care too much about LYA, either.

Hello, everybody. Thank you so much for your interest in this thread. Thank you especially, Christine, Seoulsearcher, and Lifan. (Lifan, I missed you since I left JJH thread. But I can't go back to that all-female thread, can I? ;D)
I do not want to talk about LYA this time; I would rather talk about Kim Hyun-joo and "Glass Slippers." I am just using this thread to attract people's attention to her and the drama, because it is a thread I started and it has been a pretty popular, if somewhat controversial, thread.
Let's just say this, because I cannot totally avoid Christine's question. The more I learn about Kim Hyun-joo, the more I like her. But unfortunately, I cannot say the same of LYA. But I don't want to give you reasons for my non-enthusiasm about her. But acting-wise, I think she has become a fine actress at last.
By the way, Kim Hyun-joo is not the only actress I admire. Right now, I do not know who my No.1 K-actress is, KHJ or Son Ye-jin (another delightful actress who starred in "The Classic" and "Summer Scent". in case you didn't know.) But there is something unique about KHJ: her unique beauty and her unique acting ability. And personality-wise, she is my absolute favorite. Didn't I tell you sometime ago that industry insiders think, of all the major K-actresses, Kim Hyun-joo is probably the most Janggeum-like person in real life: genuinely friendly, optimistic and also spunky, and inspiring absolute devotion from fellow cast and staff/crew members.
Folks, you really have to see "Glass Slippers," and, if possible, the fabulous historical drama "Sangdo(The Merchant Prince)," which is not available in the U.S. now but should be brought here by any means. Then, you will understand my enthusiam about her and why Daejanggeum director/producers wanted her so much for the role of Janggeum.

Thank you, Kiparang. And I think I understand your reluctance to discuss whatever you know about Lee Young-ae. You don't want to get into another controversy involving her, like the last time when you did and many LYA fans from all over the world swooped down on this thread. Kiparang, I admire you. You are not only very knowledgeable about Korean entertainment scene (you said that at one time of your life you worked for a Korean entertainment company, didn't you?) but you also seem to be knowledgeable about many other things. Like your brief but entertaining description of Amsterdam, and one about how the Dutch people of old New York area were real contributors to American democracy, and many other stuff. Thanks again. Christine

i dont know of anyone who watched DJG and did not like LYA (yet) Well, I have recently been watching DJG and I have to say I'm not crazy about LYA. Now don't get me wrong, I don't dislike her at all, I think she's a fine actress and she did a great job in playing Dae Jang-Geum. I think she's a good actress but I'm not head over heels with her. I've only seen Kim Hyun-Joo in Miss Kim and I really liked her in that. If I was a guy, I think I'd be more inclined to fall in love with Kim Hyun-Joo than Lee Young-Ae. But since I'm not, it doesn't really matter
