IMHO, my favorite scenes involving Yu-kyung was when she visited Keum-ja twice in order to convince her future mother-in-law to approve of her marrying Hye-sung....It was in her humility that I saw her greatest power, and not just in the character and personality traits previously attributed to her.
There is a saying: "A man can be courageous with an army of 100,000 behind him." As I see it, there is much less merit in being able to hold your ground, knowing that you have a strong foundation to support you. (In Yu-kyung's case, her wealthy family.)
It would be an entirely different matter altogether if Yu-kung came from a poor struggling family (like Hye-ran's), and she refused to allow Myung-joo or Kwei-boon to bully her around...I would then give her a lot more credit!
When I think of tough characters, Bae Yong-jun in FIRST LOVE comes to mind! And I am not just saying that because he's a guy!
Back in the day when he was law student Sung Chan-woo and his father and sister were selling food off a food cart and his brother was delivery guy (they all lived in slum area in Seoul), he dared confront Chairman Lee Jae-ha, CEO of Prince Hotel ( actor Jo Kyung Hwan-OMR's likeable Suh Dong-pyo!), by angrily throwing at him the money Jae-ha left for Sung Duk-bae (Chan-woo's father)... who was at the time hospitalized Okay, it was foolhardy of him, and he did get abducted and beat up for that by Jae-ha's band of thugs...but you gotta give him credit! And besides, in an earlier episode, Chan-woo lured Jae-ha's equally despicable brother-in-law to a restaurant bathroom and bloodied that bastard's nose, after the lights were turned off!
I think if I were to rate OMR and FIRST LOVE in any major category, FIRST LOVE would come out on top!
IMHO, still the K-drama by which all others are measured.....
