Episode 101 has just been shown in Korea, and while I so a preview of that this past weekend, I couldn't help but make comparisons btw OMR and YH at the same point in time....To me, it seems like OMR still beats YH when both were at eps. 101 level for sheer intensity.... Things are really happening with OMR, plenty of surprises, and this series continues to be so unpredictable in some ways.....One thing for sure, we will be talking a lot about it once we reach the 100 mark....

I agree. Yellow Handkerchief was much more exciting to watch. You can miss a week of OMR and still know what's going on!

Uh, I don't think so...miss a week of OMR (esp. the recent episodes coming out of Korea...) and you would be left scratching your head, wondering what the heck has happened....things are moving so fast here..... I recall when we were all watching YH around eps. 105, almost everything focused on Ja-young and Min-jae's relationship and , but OMR is more complicated, even though the focus is still on relationships....It has been some ride, that is for sure.......

OMR is the 3rd drama I followed and must say it's boring to tears. It could use a little more comedic relief to get us out of all those depressing, drawn out, lost love scenes.
YH was an okay drama, but the all time favorite and what got me hooked on these dramas is "Who's my Love" The best IMHO so far and have yet to see anything come even close.

I'm afraid you can't compare OMR with WML, one was a light comedy and the other is more dark and a drama with a bit of comedy here and there.
But I do agree, these writers must be paid by the eps, cause we all know HK and HR broke up, we all know they both are hurting, but do we have to see it for 3 weeks straight everyday? ;D

I agree, OMR can not beat YH, IMO. I always looked forward to watching YH and then the repeat the next day; but with OMR, if I liked the episode at night I'll watch it the next morning, if not, I could go without. I got sick of the HK/HR relationship dragging on for weeks and the EA plotting and scheming. It's as if the writers couldn't do more for those scenes. Now if I'm watching and I hear the violins playing and see HR moping again, I just say, oh! boy here we go again. So for me, YH is far better a drama than OMR. ;D ;D

Now that HK is out of the picture for a while, the focus can shift to the other characters, who are much more interesting.
Stay in America the whole two years, HK! Don't come back and spoil everything!

I haven't seen YH but I can tell you that Winter Sonata, which I ordered on DVD and finished watching, has OMR beat hands down -- and I have ordered three more english-subtitled dramas to watch and I can't WAIT to get them!!!! Much as I enjoy OMR, maybe because its drawn out so much I am not on the edge of my seat. WS on the other hand, I watched all the episodes in 4 days and was so drawn in to the story that it just consumed my watching!! Also, Bae Young-Jun, the star, was so amazing to watch as an actor that I couldn't take my eyes off of him! AND the story was rather intense -- much more than OMR is at this point. Just of course, my limited opinion!!!! I hope YH comes out in english subtitles so I can get that to watch also, because I missed it here in NJ. Kathy D

I LOVE Winter Sonata! (I own it as well as Rooftop Room Cat, Autumn in My Heart, Summer Scent and Hotelier) It wasn't a daily drama though. Another drama I REALLY enjoyed was Who's My Love (would buy that one in a heartbeat, but haven't seen it subtitled!).
Off topic but, did you know the girls who played the leads in Who's My Love were involved in scandals at two different times? Lee Tae Ran (Hana) was caught having "relations" with her manager. Some time after the drama (actually, I think it was within the last 6 mos), Lee Seung Yoon (Ji-yeon) had some controversial photos taken. She was posing as a war prositute for the Japanese (during the Japanese occupation of Korea) and it created a lot of publicity. (They were horrible pictures!)
As far as daily dramas go, Yellow Handkerchief was good but I much preferred To Be With You. In Yellow Handkerchief, I really got tired of SangMin and his wife.
*edited to add* OMR is okay, but it tends to drag at times. I'm a few episodes behind Chicago, but haven't really been "grabbed" by this drama unlike Yellow Handercheif and To Be with You. I am recording it (comes on while I'm getting my children ready for bed) and tend to fast forward quite a bit.

I suppose everyone by now must know that I think Who's My Love is the best thing that ever came down the pike. I particularly liked Michael's subtitling, because I gleaned enormous funds of information about Korean culture from them--such as, what an ajumma is, and why honorifics are important.
As for Winter Sonata (also called Winter Love Song), I am conflicted about that one. First, I thought the writing and acting were first rate. On the other hand, what a bizarre, unlikely story line! I thought the plot was worthy (and I use that term in a negative sense) of American soap operas. What that boy's mother was supposed to have caused to occur to him after he got into the accident--really quite impossible. (I'm trying not to give it away to those who have not seen it yet.) But I was willing to go along with it, because the relationships and action were so compelling. Truly a great melodrama.
I had read (on this board) about the scandal of WML's Lee Tae Ran (Hana), but the post also said her appearance on YH signaled she'd been "forgiven" for that. I had not heard about Lee Seung Yoon (Ji-yeon)--these were not "naughty" pictures, I assume, but only controversial for subject matter? Was this some sort of art statement, or a civil protest?
I loved YH, but there were times when it, too, ran on and on and on.... When I first started watching, it seemed too high-strung, people seemed to jump up and screech at each other for no apparent reason. But I was drawn in when Sang-min was trying to break up with Ja-young, and she was being so innocent and clueless, and I never missed it after that. (I tried, believe me.) OMR does not have that pull. I've cut down to twice a week, and I have not missed a thing.
Except Grannie making Yu-jin lose her baby, of course.
Bo
PS - MELISSA--how good are the subtitles on Winter Sonata? Is it on DVD? Where'd you get it? How much did it cost?

Actually, the scandal with Lee Tae Ran happened about a year before 'Who's My Love'. Her appearance in that drama was her comeback. According to Lee Seung Yeon she meant the pictures to be a statement of sorts. I don't think they were ever seen as 'naughty'. Bo, like you said, they angered a lot of people though because of the subject matter. Also, regarding drama comparisons, I don't think comparing a daily drama (like YH or OMR) or a long drama (like Who's My Love) to a miniseries (like Winter Love Story) is a fair comparison at all. The content between these dramas tends to be very different. Longer dramas tend to be more family oriented while miniseries have more dramatic plots. Winter Love Story is on sale at annyoung.com for $95. It's the entire drama on 6 DVD's and also brings the OST. For more info on it click HERE.

I only paid $81 for my DVD of Winter Sonata from yesasia.com with english subtitles and free shipping -- so check that out! I will try to get the other shows all mentioned so I can check them out -- I do honestly believe it was Bae Young-Jun in Winter Sonata that made me love the show so much -- he just amazed me!!! I can't wait to see him in other shows I've ordered too! Kathy D

Sorry Knov1, since I'm a relative NEWBIE to Korean ANYTHING, I have no point of reference -- finding OMR was a fluke for me (I was laid off and couldn't sleep, drifting from channel to channel!) and then decided to view more shows so got Winter Sonata. Not knowing the difference between them from daily show to mini-series, as on the website I bought from they are all listed under "KOREAN DRAMAS" .
So I can only compare what I have seen and that's why my comments. Also, my feelings are based on acting, not necessarily story lines, etc -- I just thought the actors in WS were so amazing -- the show allowed for a lot more emotion than OMR does, I believe. But as money and time permits, I will view all the others mentioned here so I have a better base for comparision!!!
