I received an E-mail today which claimed to be from my Internet provider, but obviously wasn't. Judging from the header, my address had been harvested from this board.
This was the message:
Your e-mail account will be disabled because of improper using in next three days, if you are still wishing to use it, please, resign your account information.
For further details see the attach.
I don''t know if anyone else from this board may be targeted, but I thought I'd give everyone a heads-up. Remember to use all due caution regarding opening E-mail and attachments!

I had e-mail as IF returned and even w/attachment.
They can alter the return and make it look like MY returned mail by MY carrier but I did not send that. One was where I did not send anything recently. Multiple e-mail accounts!
I delete almost everything anyway.
If it LOOKS strange DELETE IT and surely do not REPLY!

If you have web based e-mail (like Yahoo or Hotmail), that's a good idea. But if you DOWNLOAD your e-mail, with Eudora or MS Outlook, MAKE SURE you delete you attachments as well! Otherwise, months down the road, you may accidentally activate it!

Would this be why I received an email claiming I'd sent an email to "nsheldon" with the (completely fatuous) greeting "hello" that "contained a virus"? I received it on my yahoo account, which I really don't use.
I do not think for a moment that nsheldon had anything to do with this. The only place I've used that email account is in my profile, here, on the KBC board.
This was the text of my email (there was no attachment). I reported it as spam to Yahoo.
Date: Tue, 9 Mar 2004 14:59:31 -0800 From: "Postmaster" <postmaster@co.la.ca.us> Add to Address Book To: cantadora1@yahoo.com Subject: WARNING: YOU MAY HAVE A VIRUS
The Declude Virus software on co.la.ca.us has reported that you sent an E-mail to nsheldon@co.la.ca.us, containing the the W32/Netsky.d@MM virus !!! virus in the your_picture.pif attachment. The subject of the E-mail was "Re: Hello". The E-mail containing the virus has been deleted to prevent further damage. Please check your PC for viruses prior to resending.--- *This E-mail scanned for viruses.*

Yes, this is really a crummy situation. Apparently, there are lots of dishonest people farming the internet for people's e-mail addresses, and some of them came upon the member list at this site.
When I joined up here, I deliberately left my e-mail address "hidden," specifically because I didn't want everybody in the whole wide world getting information about me that they didn't need to know. I also have to say that I had mixed feelings about making it hidden, wondering if I was being a little anti-social in doing so.
But, there's so many rotten people out there in the internet world, what can you do?
Be careful, everybody!

I do not use my ISP e-mail at all! Only for them.
I have 3 free right now (one under a phony name). Hotmail is just delete everyday! A lot of software business ads anyway and some darn nasty noiticeable SPAM. Had similiar on BOTH Yahoo and Hotmail today! LOOKED DANGEROUS! <=========
=====> Remember to have any people DELETE you from their address books that are STOLEN online. That is a major way for them to get it. Hacking sites and steaing their database is another.
The so called (business) computer GEEKS that keep everyone's address in some mail database is putting you in danger. Then you have people )friends?) who need to give a few addresses to look good or get freebees from where they are doing things. I think I have one as the stuff is HIS business related.
Like send 5 addresses to your insurance company for a trinket!
E-mail is like junk USPS, really more so JUNK and does not really cost them anything vs postage.

You opened it? I would think of such mail as having a TOXIC powder for the computer!
I have my Hotmail BLOCK MAIL full but usually just fed up to do that.
If you are not sure, leave it till later when you think differently.

I had registered on an other Korean soap related forum.
I have gotten YesAsia ads for ages as I ordered Chinese music/VCDs ONLY and only get Chinese ads. I like the SOUND!
I had a Korean ad! They do not DO that! AH HA!

Whenever you receive an email do the following:
1. Don't open any suspicious attachments.
2. Delete any emails that asks for credit card, SSN, or passwords (add to that emails claiming you are entitled to claim millions of dollars for merely signing a document). No decent company is insane enough to ask you for such important information via email.
Hope that helps for computer newbies.
Michael

I have a mac, so viruses almost never effect us And I also usually use my yahoo acct. and it's nice b/c it scans for viruses before you download anything, but unknown attachments from strangers are never opened anyway (by me). Yahoo recently had a virus that sent fake emails to my yahoo lists with an alleged warning from me. And then there were the emails sent about supposed x-rated Osama Bin Laden pics. Some are obvious, but others are not. And remember there are also fake emails asking you to verify your password and sometimes paypal credit card info -- THEY ARE FAKE!!! They direct you to a fake site that looks totally real, but do NOT EVER "verify" your information by clicking on a link in an email! Your isp or paypal or yahoo never NEVER ask you to "verify" any information. Be careful!

(But some of them are so badly spelled--particularly the ones that are supposed to be from credit card companies--one wonders how anyone could fall for them.) Bo

I just got one of these things from "hanhouse@earthlink.net"--which is, of course, Michael's email, listed here. I did open it, even though it came to my bulk mail account, because I figured Yahoo did not recognize Michael, but (natch) it was just gibberish, with an attachment (which I did NOT open).
Stay vigilant.

Just wanted to let you know, so if you get ANYTHING from hanhouse@earthlink.net, please do go ahead and delete it.
