...is up on Kocowa now, with subs. The usual 24 hours to watch it before it goes behind their paywall.

(click for full size) Yes! Yes it is! Finally somebody gets it right. The dirtbag speaks the truth. The whole thing has totally gone bonkers. It’s not the worst material we’ve ever seen in a historical, but it’s taken the story we’re supposed to be getting totally in a wrong direction. Why? What is the point? UGH. (click for full size) So looky here, we have Wongyeong from LBKT again. Pretty much the exact same power-hungry queen character, from the same head writer. And speaking of her, If I were Hyeonjong the first thing I’d have done after learning what happened would be forbid the empress from any contact with any of the chancellors. Doesn’t that seem pretty obvious? But they’re still coming and going from her residence like nothing had happened. This is unfortunate because she was an interesting character and I'm sorry to lose the character we had. Now she's turned into something that doesn't at all seem consistent with the character we got to know. The rationale that Gamchan wrote, it went by pretty quickly so here it is again: “You can use the Eight Rules from ‘The Rites of Zhou” and the section from ‘The Book of Rites’ about how punishments do not extend up to [high] officers to back up your argument. Especially in the case of imperial relatives, the emperor can pardon all crimes committed by them as long as it is not an act of treason against the emperor.” Yoo Jin: “The emperor is also a human being. An imperfect being…If no regional lords hold the emperor in check, no being can stop the emperor…from that point on, the people can only pray for their emperor to be a sage king. I simply tried to stop that.” Okay this is a big improvement over his attempt to explain himself in the previous episode. They should have given us this the first time. It at least makes sense and you can understand his motivation. For me the best part of the episode was the glimpses we got of the garment workers in the palace. That was really interesting. (click for full size) Well it makes a mess but at least it’s not a fist clench. This may have been the first episode with no fist clenches--so at least you can say one good thing about it. “Your majesty, this is a compromise.” Gee THAT took long enough, it was three episodes ago that it seemed obvious and I asked why everybody couldn’t produce a compromise. Now we know, it was to string out the fiction. The only other thing I’ll add about this one is that we’re seeing Hyeonjong really growing into the job and starting to grab the reins like a strong emperor. It’s neat to see! Such a shame that it’s being buried in the middle of all of this fiction. It's almost shocking how far of a detour this seris has taken, and how suddenly it happened.

Historically accurate parts of this episode :
1. Lady Kim not being called "Empress" when she first married.
2. Sending inspectors across all regions (them being battered by regional lords is fiction)
3. Tak Sajeong getting exiled for agreeing to Kang Jo's coup (what he did in the court before getting exiled is fiction)
Everything else was all fiction.

I was wondering when Tak Sajeong’s exile would happen, but for some reason I thought it would happen later
I ended up breaking what I said just to get the satisfaction him finally getting what he deserves

So even the novel author is expressing dissatisfaction. Neat.
I do wonder how the novel handled the stuff between the two invasions though, if at all

Hey Steve! Thought of you the other day when I stumbled across KBS America running this series and yeah no subs on my station either. What a disgrace. Anyway thanks for this article, it's very interesting. In fact I'm reprinting the text of it here.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Writer Gil Expresses Disappointment with the Progression of KBS2 Kdrama "Korea-Khitan War"by Lily Alice, January 18, 2024The author of "Goryeo-Khitan War: Sweet Rain in The Winter", the novel from which KBS 2TV's historical drama Korea-Khitan War is adapted, Gil Seung Soo, expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the K-drama unfolded after episode 16. He says that the show deviates not only from the novel but also from historical facts. Recently, Gil posted an article on his blog titled "Post-Episode 16: The Story After General Yang Gyu's Death" discussing the content of episodes 17 and 18 of the KBS drama Korea-Khitan War, which aired on January 13 and 14, respectively. Writer Gil Seung Soo stated, "Of course, Hyeonjong's [played by Kim Dong Jun] falling from a horse depicted in episode 18 of KBS2's Korea-Khitan War is not part of the original story" and added, "I believe that he [the scriptwriter] should have thoroughly grasped historical facts, sought ample advice, and then written the script, but it seems that he lacked understanding. After the scriptwriter was replaced, they did not consult me except for battle scenes, so I am not aware of what happened behind the scenes." Continuing, he said, "It seems that the scriptwriter is deliberately trying to deviate from the original work and write their own piece. By trying to deviate from the original work, they seem to be deviating from the historical context within it. I find it hard to believe that such a person is writing a historical drama for the public broadcaster KBS." Regarding King Hyeonjong falling from the horse, he remarked, "I properly explained Hyunjong's character to the production team, but in the end, the scriptwriter used it however he wanted, and it has led to this disappointment. They are making a fool out of someone who can be considered the most brilliant military commander in Korean history." The writer also said that he hopes the drama will soon get back on track. In episode 18 of Korea-Khitan War, which aired on January 14, King Hyeonjong of Goryeo dismissed Gang Gam Chan (Choi Soo Jong), who opposed his reforms. After Gang Gam Chan appealed for the impeachment of Kim Eun Bu (Jo Seung Yun), Hyeonjong, angered, visited him and told him to leave Gaegyeong (the capital city of Goryeo). Hyeonjong was shown riding a horse and falling from it while trying to avoid a cart that blocked his path. After watching this, some people started criticizing the drama for the way it portrayed King Hyeonjong and for the historical accuracy of the context. Korea-Khitan War is available to stream on Viki, Netflix, and Kocowa. mydramalist.com/article/writer-gil-expresses-disappointment-with-the-progression-of-korea-khitan-war-after-episode-16https://mydramalist.com/article/writer-gil-expresses-disappointment-with-the-progression-of-korea-khitan-war-after-episode-16

Here's another article on the subject that I was able to find with English language Google. It has some other portions of the novel author's blog post. (I did try to find the original blog but Google didn't turn it up.) There's a bit of clumsiness in the translation here and there, but still some helpful insight.
Also I'm guessing that the events of August 1011 referred to in this article may be what truth was referring to when he mentioned something important not being addressed in the series. Correct? I hadn't heard of these events before so I'm not sure.

Author Criticizes KBS 2TV’s ‘Goryeo Khitan War’ for Deviating from Original Work and Historical Facts
It was noted that it was different from the original work and the historical facts. “Hyeonjong’s accident of falling off a horse is not in the original work...What are you trying to say...I hope you get out of the third class.”
Kim Soo-young, Hankyung.com reporter January 18, 2024
Author Gil Seung-soo, who wrote the original novel for the KBS 2TV epic drama ‘Goryeo Khitan War’, has criticized the content of the drama after episode 16. This was because the story unfolds in a way that deviated from the original work as well as historical facts.
On the 15th, author Gil posted an article on his blog titled ‘Chapter 16: The original content after Yang-gyu’s death.’
He said, “As I said before, the contract for KBS original work was not only for the published ‘Goryeo Khitan War: Heroes of Goryeo’, but also for ‘Goryeo Khitan War: The Battle of Europe and China’, which is currently being written.” “It was provided to KBS for about a page and it covers the post-war recovery after Yang-gyu’s death,” he explained.
Following the content of the original work, ”Ha Gong-jin is dragged north by the Khitan army, sees the reconstruction of the battle of Seogyeong and Yang Gyu, and vows to return to Goryeo. King Hyeonjong went from Naju to Gaegyeong. On the way back, I meet a messenger sent from Heunghwajin and Tongju in Gongju. Here, I learn that Yang Gyu died retaking Gwakju and rescuing 30,000 prisoners.”
He continued, “Until this time, Hyeonjong had mourned his situation, but after hearing Yang Gyu’s story, he woke up. From now on, he vowed not to mourn but to serve the country and the people. The one something true about the subjects who serve Hyeonjong.”
Also, “In August 1011, the people of East Yeojin attacked Gyeongju using ships. Hyeonjong sent Gang Gam-chan to Gyeongju, and Gang Gam-chan became attached to Dongbuk-myeon and began his military career. Chae Chung-sun, Kim Eun-bu, etc. He pointed out, “He goes to Khitan as an ambassador and takes part in diplomatic warfare. The reorganization of the local system by King Hyeonjong also appears, but it is not depicted as a serious conflict like in the drama.” said Writer Gil, “And of course, Hyeonjong’s fall from a horse depicted in episode 18 is not in the original content. “
In the episode criticized by author Gil, Hyeonjong (played by Kim Dong-jun) and Kang Gam-chan (Choi Soo-jong) were shown in conflict over the military and county system. During this process, Hyeonjong was unable to control his anger and extended his arm to strangle Gang Gam-chan, but he pulled his arm back. He was unable to control his anger and had an accident while riding a horse. This attracted criticism from some viewers.
Writer Gil said in a blog comment, “I provided the original work and the history book to KBS, but the script writer is trying to force himself to write his own script. It’s very pathetic.” He added, “Until episode 16, it was within the framework of the story and the original work, but now what?” “I don’t know if he’s trying to tell a story,” he noted.
He said, “They’re making a fool of the person who can be considered the most famous soldier in Korean history. After the script writer was replaced, I didn’t get any advice except for the battle scenes, so I don’t know exactly the The script is released in a hurry, and there is no time to revise.” “Perhaps the reason is that it is a very urgent matter,” he said.
He added, “I hope the play breaks away from being third,” adding, “You can ignore the original work, but since it’s a historical drama, I hope they don’t ignore it.” r history. That’s a shame.”

So the Jurchen (Yeojin) were supposed to have featured too? I wonder if that'll make it to the drama...

Also I'm guessing that the events of August 1011 referred to in this article may be what truth was referring to when he mentioned something important not being addressed in the series. Correct? I hadn't heard of these events before so I'm not sure. I was actually referring to the next big historical event, not the Jurchen pirate attack. Jurchen pirate attack did happen too but it isn't as significant as the historical event that I referred to. Of course, showing the Jurchen pirate attack would've been better than 4 episodes of fiction. However, I wouldn't have minded if they skipped and instantly moved onto the event that I referred to. (instead of showing fiction) Also, I did not say it wasn't being addressed in the series. They've been building the road to this event since Episode 1 with the characters that are involved in this event, especially more so in the last 4 episodes. I'm certain this event will be addressed because of this. I just wasn't happy that they were wasting time with 4 episodes of almost all fiction.

Thanks, ajk. My plan was to watch this on Dramacool once the series ends, but check here before to make sure it's not a stinker. So I'll be back to check everyone's comments in the post-mortem and have my fingers crossed they right the ship before it's too late.

On another note, Kang Gamchan as the head of the Kang family would've been the accurate portrayal, not the other old guy shown as his uncle.
