Caligula did similar,he invited the elderly and homeless to a big feast on a barge and than sunk it .Vlad Teppes also invited the elderly and homeless to a feast and had the doors locked and burned the building . Mokjong didn't sink or burn anyone. The fire in this drama was set by Kim Chiyang and there was no fire when historical Mokjong threw a feast for the elderly and disabled. The palace fire and the feast were 2 separate events in history, but the drama writer lumped the 2 events into one.

In 1007, Mokjong invited elderly people over the age of 80 and threw a party for them. The palace fire happened in 1009. It seems like the writer lumped the two events together. Thanks for that information. It did seem oddly specific for the writers to have completely made up the part about a party for elderly. And it really does add an interesting angle to Mokjong the person, doesn't it? What a nice thing for a ruler to do for his citizens. Certainly shows us something of him beyond all of the conflict and stress of his situation. But how they handled this, I totally disagree with. Not just that it was a cheap stunt, but something else I didn't mention is that it turns Chiyang into a bigger villain because now he's not just jockeying for power but he's willing to endanger innocent elders to do it. Which he did not do in real history. Anybody have any comments about Mokjong’s wardrobe? Is it wrong for him to be wearing this? Why would you say it's wrong? It just didn't look very royal, that's all. I guess it could have been nighttime wear, and this Mokjong doesn't seem like he's care much for formalities...but it looked unusual to me. Just asking. For the record, KBS America is indeed showing this un-subbed. And in time with the Domestic and KBS World feeds as well, which I've never seen before (based on Eps 1 & 2, this weekend). It was disappointing that here, the opening credits are shown in a tiny window, surrounded by an ad for a Toyota Mini-Van. This is extremely disturbing news. KBS really needs to take a look at its American presence because it leaves a LOT to be desired. The family that controls the rights here in Chicago, they haven't posted anything new on their website in a year and a half. And the current posted English-language schedule is for March 2021. And if the US network isn't even bothering with subs any more...not good. Yeah it may take a while to figure out exactly how successful this thing is, if there's a big streaming audience. The first episode was very strong and it's encouraging that just in 24 hours enough word spread to draw such a bigger number for the second episode. Now let's hope that the cheap stunts in the second episode don't drive people away this weekend. I wonder how Gang Gamchan is going to end up in Hyeonjong’s court, considering he’s just a magistrate here for the time being. My initial thought was that they’re going to repeat the made up plot point that he was friends with his father but who knows… How about this: "Somebody please give me an out-of-town assignment so I can get away from my nagging wife!" How funny would that be. It would explain why they gave us that dose of a nagging wife to begin with....

Emperors didn't wear their imperial robes all the time. That would be equivalent to presidents wearing suits outside of official events/publicity stunts. They dressed in normal clothes whenever they weren't doing their "job" as emperor. Same goes for Joseon kings. Now let's hope that the cheap stunts in the second episode don't drive people away this weekend. Korean viewer reaction to that scene was pretty positive, actually. Based on reaction I read online, many were pleasantly surprised to learn that both the fire and the feast were real, although they were 2 separate events. They also liked how Mokjong cares about his people despite appearing as someone who only cares about having parties. Many people who weren't familiar with Goryeo history were also surprised that Goryeo had a gay emeperor. Some people thought the PC writer was distorting history just to please LGBT community only to be taken aback to learn that Mokjong actually was gay.

I'm rather late to the party for this episode. When the prince escaped from the temple, I was afraid we might be treated to some Cliff Jumping. Glad he found a secret cave instead.

That's fair enough, and we do see even presidents not always in suits--although the times that they're not, even those tend to be careful wardrobe choices to make political statements.
Mokjong was paying a visit to one of his most important subordinates and trying to intimidate him so it's reasonable to wonder about the casual wear, even if it was an after hours visit. But I guess there's another way to look at it--saying You're not worth getting dressed up for. That sends a message too.
Very interesting to hear about the reaction to the gay issue. Maybe the audience wasn't ready for it thirteen years ago but I still felt that IE did a big disservice to this. Maybe this will encourage more people to watch? Hope so.

One good piece of news is that the first two episodes are still up on Kocowa for viewing with subs. When they did LBKT you only had 24 hours to watch each episode (except for the first one, if I remember right) before they went behind a paywall. I'll keep an eye on this but maybe there won't be such a strict time limit this time. That would be a big improvement.

I had the exact same thought! Like in The Fugitive...he'd come out of that cave and there would be a big waterfall. Oh well lol

For place like Liadong(Yodong in Korean), I understand why they would use a Chinese version of the name since Liadong/Yodong is now part of China and has been part of China ever since the fall of Goguryeo. My mistake. Liadong/Yodong has been part of China ever since the fall of Balhae, not Goguryeo.
