One of my favorite episodes of IYSS dealt with a disease outbreak in the Cholla navy camp. I wonder if this EWG episode inspired it. It was an okay episode but from what I recall about the IYSS episode, this one wasn’t as good because of a few stumbles.
Funny how everyone watching this in 2022 has a very different perspective on it than we’d have had even just three years ago.
“You must also cover your mouth and nose to stop the transmission of the virus.” WHAT? How dare you! This is about my freedom! Keep your big government off my face! My body my choice! Waaaaaahhh!!!
So the guys out there doing the heavy work are wearing masks but all the bigwigs on both sides aren’t—even when they all gather together shoulder-to-shoulder to stare at somebody dying. Both physicians told them not to do that, but again and again they ignore the advice. It got to be distracting, we saw it over and over again. Even getting right up into Taepyoung’s face.
“This is absurd! We just learned about this illness yesterday! How could hundreds of people have died already?” Not WG’s finest hour. He wasn’t at all the calm, smart person we saw rise to power. Kyun-hwon wasn’t exactly calm either but we’re used to that from him.
Bok Jikyum: “The virus will thrive in the humility after the rain.” The subs have been very good but this was a funny typo that snuck through. (Of course, when you’re all wet you probably don’t feel too good about yourself....)
The dream-sign guy they’ve brought in is totally annoying.
Geum-kang: “Father, I can’t breathe.” Gee, maybe he should try swallowing a lung.
”Oh, how I regret becoming a physician.” Yeah dude, you should have watched a few of these series first! This may have surpassed cliff-jumping and blood in the mouth to become the all-time #1 top KHD cliché. It’s a contender at least.
Yeah I had the same reaction. Wasn’t terribly thrilled about tossing in a mysterious ancestral visit to help explain the outbreak story. But I can appreciate the writers wanting to weave these historical tidbits into the story somehow...and to their credit, they made absolutely clear that it was a dramatization so at least they were upfront about it.
No offense, Taepyoung, you did a lot of good work for your country...but that death scene sure did get dragged out for too long, didn’t it?
Well at least now we can be pretty sure why the Bekjae physician’s name is known to us and the Koryo physician’s name isn’t.

■ Kyun-hwon and the tale of the worm...A story is written in ancient chronicle of a young maiden who becomes pregnant after being nightly visited by a mysterious young man of striking appearance. A thread was sewn on his clothes to identify him one night, and followed next morning, to find that he was a worm. The child [that the] maiden produced was Kyun-hwon. Of course this is only a mythical tale. But this tale would play a significant role in the forthcoming battle of Andong and endure as a legend to this day. This story is dramatized, adapting from the Tales of Andong.
