There's a rumor that the traditional historical that will succeed LBW is going to be about Emperor Hyeonjong of Goryeo. This comes from the same person who posted the rumor of KBS traditional returning months before official article, so there's a good chance of this being true. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyeonjong_of_GoryeoIt's official. Hyeonjong will be the main character of the next traditional historical. It will consist of 32 episodes just like the LBW drama. Start date is yet to be confirmed yet. It might not even air until next year, but the drama was officially announced to be in plan by president of KBS yesterday. I feel like 32 episodes are too short for a drama that would have to cover Hyeonjong's story before becoming king and 3 wars against the Khitans. There should be at least 50 episodes like JD and Jingbirok in my opinion. Hope they make accurate costumes for this drama. I don't want to see the fantasy armors from IE again. (mod note 3/3/22: this post moved from Lee Bangwon, King of Tears board to start new board)

Thanks for the good news, truth--I moved your post to start our board for the series, hope that's okay with you.
I agree, 32 episodes just isn't enough time for someone with such an eventful life and reign. Especially this one because there's a 200-year period in history with only Iron Empress covering any of it. No other dramas. Most likely with only 32 episodes they'll cover the same material IE did and that will again leave the rest of the period uncovered.
But still, there are so few Goryeo dramas, it will be great to have another one. And hopefully they'll present his years more accurately than IE did. So I'll sure be looking forward to it.

So what is the hypothetical scenario?
First part of the series shows circumstances of Hyeonjong's birth, specifically the stuff with his parents, unless they gloss over that and exposit it instead.
The reign of Mokjong with his mother being in charge and her attempt to replace him with the son she has with Kim Chiyang from pre-Hyeonjong's point of view? Will they make him involved in the political plot somehow?
Gang Jo putting Hyeonjong on the throne following with the second Khitan invasion, then time skip to the third Khitan invasion ending with Gang Gamchan winning at Gwiju. Actually, I would not be surprised if the series ends with an epilogue showing the victory at Kwiju, just like what IE did if I remember it correctly. Or they will be cheap and have Hyeonjong be informed about the victory at Gwiju. Or maybe the series will end with Goryeo repelling the second invasion and the narrator says that the Khitans tried again but Goryeo won again.
Also, Hyeonjong commissioning the first Tripitaka Koreana. I'm probably missing some other things. I don't really have in-depth knowledge about this part of the Goryeo period.
Yeah, this feels like too much for 32 episodes. I can't even estimate how many episodes would take for each of the above mentioned events. The 32 episodes must be a cost saving measure.
I wonder if any of the actors will reprise their IE roles? We already have the same actor playing Lee Jiran reprising his role in the Bangwon show, so it's not a stretch to think that.

I'm excited for the Tripitaka part of the show if anything else. God of War/Soldier handled the process behind making the 2nd rendition so well that I'm interested to see any drama portray it.

Ironically, this is KBS's first Goryeo historical since Iron Empress. I wonder if any of the actors will reprise their IE roles? We already have the same actor playing Lee Jiran reprising his role in the Bangwon show, so it's not a stretch to think that. I was hoping maybe Lee Deokhwa can reprise Kang Gamchan again. Also wanted to see Choi Cheolho (Seonjo in IYSS) return to historical in this drama, but it most likely won't happen due to his recent arrest for illegally breaking into someone's apartment under influence. I'm guessing like half the actors from LBW will return again in the next historical. For example, I think Lee Gwanggi(Jeong Dojeon in LBW) will probably return again. He's in like every KBS historical.

Do you think the Khitans will be portrayed as wearing dreadlocks again?

Do you think the Khitans will be portrayed as wearing dreadlocks again? Hope not Here's an accurate portrayal of Khitans in a recent documentary about the Khitan invasion. Hopefully the costumes for the new drama look similar to this.

I was not expecting an English speaker in that documentary.

That was terrific, appreciate the post. I hope whatever battle scenes we get in the new drama look as good as that.

Pretty cool. Too bad there weren't English subs. Authentic looking shaggy horses. Khitans speaking a non-Korean language.

He did what now? π I actually don't miss him in historicals, to be very honest. He was okay in earlier stoic roles (IYSS, DJY) but for any role that required even a little expression I found him really overly theatrical (Bidam in King's Dream, that one guy in Saimdang...). And of course, that one scene in Iron Empress..

He was okay in earlier stoic roles (IYSS, DJY) but for any role that required even a little expression I found him really overly theatrical I thought he was pretty good as Lee Hangbok in KBS Jingbirok. That was terrific, appreciate the post. I hope whatever battle scenes we get in the new drama look as good as that. Fun fact : The narrator of this documentary is the actor who plays Lee Banggwa in the LBW drama Authentic looking shaggy horses. Khitans speaking a non-Korean language. Khitans in the video are Mongolian actors and all the Khitan scenes were filmed in Mongolia. There are no direct descendants of Khitans left today. The Mongolians were hired to play the Khitans since they are closely related cousins of the Khitans. Here's another video if you liked the first clip I posted above.

After listening it to it more closely, yeah, that is Kim Myungsoo's voice.

You know what would suck?
If somehow this didnβt get on KOCOWA and or English subtitles.
Regardless of whether the show turns out good or bad.
