"The Joseon Dynasty's 7th King Suyang! The heroes of the times around him are tangled in a historical drama about life, death and love."
"The heroes of history. Under their shadow, a bloody story unfolds as women of the Lee Dynasty live a pitiful life of heartrending, passionate love and bitter betrayal."
"Suyang, who burns with great ambition! Han Myeong Hoe, a genius of his time! And the tragic woman Nan Yi. Their meeting starts a hectic dance with history..."
A lot of ways to say this is about King Sejo killing Danjong, with some fictional characters included. The title itself comes from a poem written by Wang Bang Yeon, who was a State Tribunal officer at the time. He accompanied Danjong to his place of exile, and witnessed his death. The poem he wrote translates to:
"Bereaved of my love on the long road,
My heart sits at the lonely stream.
The water cries like my heart, as it flows into the night."
Or something like that.
This story was later adapted to 500 Years of Joseon's Apricot Tree in the Snow, the 1988 movie Premature Apricot Tree in the Snow and KBS2's Han Myeong Hoe, with focus on more historical events than the romance of the fictional characters.
I feel like this could've been in TBC's 500-Year History series if Shin Bong Seung hadn't stopped writing for TBC after Lady of the Side Chamber.
Short clip of the show:
Sejo: "I think the Royal Grandson's death was a divine punishment given to me by Heaven."
