So a whole bunch of important people risked their lives to put WG on the throne. There have been at least two attempts to assassinate him recently. And now they’re touring what until recently was non-aligned territory in the north. And they put him right out there at the front of the procession wearing a briight yellow robe that looks like it was made for target practice. Seriously? Yes it’s understandable why they’d set it up this way for television, but sometimes it’s exceptionally ridiculous and this is certainly one of those times. Put him in the middle with lots of guards around him like it would have been in real history. And as a bonus it makes him look a lot more important, like say a king, how about that. Sheesh.
So now this is the third different town that we’re told Yu is from. Pyungju is actually on the way from the capital to Pyongyang, so maybe in the previous episode they were talking about the general Pyongyang region...still there’s no need for this confusion.
Oh and that business about rescuing thousands of captured civilians, I wish we had heard more about that! Maybe was it a mis-translation, as in their village was taken over and forcibly turned anti-Koryo? Needed some explanation.
WG: “Eventually we will advance further north. We must...Reunification of the Three Kingdoms is a small task. Our ultimate goal is northward expansion.” Ummm...hey WG doesn’t that sound like someone you knew? Someone who got into a lot of trouble for trying to do that very thing?
Oh look, and now here’s Kyun-hwon riding in front of a huge procession off to war...and he’s wearing a white outfit that totally stands out, every bit as much as WG’s robe did. At least it looks like some sort of armor or protection, but still...this needs to stop.
KH: “We outnumber them by two to one.” Not good enough! You’d better hope that they really have lost their spirit like you say they have.
So we went someplace new in this one, actually got to see into a neutral territory, that was great! This was a very good sequence, the whole chain of events. It reminded me of how IYSS used to go off onto a side story that wasn’t necessary to see in detail but added a lot to the bigger picture. And it also showed real-world consequences of crazy old Ahjagae going to Koryo. Still doesn’t justify spending so much time on that fictional cancer story, but at least this does tie the character’s decision into the story in a meaningful way.
You do have to feel sorry for the Bekjae crown prince for the way his dad has belittled him and put him down do much, over and over again...but seeing him make the very same mistake here that he made the last time he tried to take a fort, I mean good heavens how dumb his he? Maybe dad has a point.
“Roll down the logs!” Well sure, if gravity is your friend, what the heck, why not. That was well filmed and left us with a good cliffhanger. Things sure have perked up after all of that ginseng drudgery.
■ Yu Geumpil...Native of Pyungju, along with Shin Seungkyum, he was one of Wang Guhn’s most brave and loyal servants. Like this, he would periodically go to the north, bringing tribal leaders of the frontier to their knees and rescuing thousands of captured citizens of Koryo. And he would glorify Wang Guhn with his distinguished military services until old age. He was an indispensable subject to Wang Guhn.
