...should be up on Kocowa in the next twelve hours. As usual, we have 24 hours to watch it with ads and not have to pay for it.

There are so may jokes that could be made about an actor who played Ha Ryun previously having a conversation with another actor playing Ha Ryun.
Did Yi Bangseok's Crown Princess really have an affair with a eunuch?
The massacre of the Wang clan. I'll give the series this. They aren't sugarcoating it. Though I have to say, while I know the Wang clan being killed is accurate, I would have expected some hesitancy on Yi Seonggye's part, especially since his reputation for replacing the dynasty still isn't good.

Did Yi Bangseok's Crown Princess really have an affair with a eunuch? Yes. You might say how can an eunuch have an affair with a girl without balls? Not all eunuchs were castrated at the time. Goryeo's eunuchs were divided into two types of eunuchs : not castrated and castrated. If you remember Choi Manseng from 1st episode of Jeong Dojeon, he was an eunuch with beard, meaning he was not castrated. First eunuchs of Joseon had eunuchs who weren't castrated just like Goryeo. Unfortunately, the eunuch who had an affair with Crown Princess led to a new law that required all eunuchs to be castrated. Flaw of this scene : They made it seem like they massacred the entire Wang clan, which was not the case. They only killed about 130 people closest to Goryeo throne hiearchy(including King Gongyang). 130 is still a lot, yes, and should not be sugarcoated in any way, but there is a difference between killing off entire Wang clan and killing 130 of them. Wangs who weren't close to throne hiearchy survived. There are still descendants of Wang family today. For example, the actress Jeon Jihyeon's original legal name is Wang Jihyeon. She is a descendant of Wang royal family. Jeon is just her stage/celebrity name. If you aren't familiar with her name, she played Ashin in Kingdom. Two men leading the massacre in this scene are Jo Younggyu and Jo Youngmu. Historically, they had nothing to do with this massacre. Shim Hyoseng, Son Heungjong, Oh Mong-eul, and Yun Banggyeong were in charge of this massacre. None of them made the appearance in this drama as they aren't as important people except Shim Hyoseng and I don't expect any of them to make an appearance in the future episodes except for Shim Hyoseng as well.

Yet again, some very good and some very weak. Beginnings and endings of episodes seem to be a particular problem--trying too hard for big dramatic pops.
Lady Min: “What difference would it make even if he returns alive?” Now what kind of an attitude is that? Yes this is a difficult situation for her but that wasn’t well written at all, certainly not the way you should start an episode.
So the queen is dabbing at her forehead with a cloth. Big credit here, they didn’t resort to the old coughing-up-blood cliché. Good for them. But they rushed the illness into the story too quickly. It only took 41 seconds from dabbing to chest pains, and one more scene to get to a heart attack.
Thanks to truth for the explanation about the affair with a eunuch; I was wondering about that too. Choi Manseng was seen throughout Shin Don and briefly in Jeong Dojeon so that was a good reference.
(But can you imagine being one of the other eunuchs? The next day the bosses call a big staff meeting...“So we have a new job requirement...We won’t cut your salaries but we’re gonna cut your...uh...well, ummmm....” Damn!)
Weakest two scenes began with the execution on Ganghwa Island. I don’t know if it happened in exactly that manner, invasion-style in that village...but what we got was poorly choreographed. People get slashed with a sword and their bodies go wildly flying in every direction, it looked ridiculous. Made me think of bad pro wrestling—they call that “overselling.” And if King Gongyang was among those executed, then we should have seen him getting it, of all people. He’s by far the most important one, and the only one we know from watching. Big mistake there.
And then in the next scene the new scholar guy kicks three other scholars’ butts single-handedly and it looked very phony. Two bad choreography jobs in a row. And why are scholars fighting, aren’t they supposed to be above that? And somebody tell the costume department that if you want to make people look tough, you don’t dress them in baby pink and baby blue. There was no need for any of this silliness.
“You have felt my pulse. You should tell me what kind of disease I have.” And darned if he didn’t, in great detail. He was treated properly and not hauled off to be executed; and he was good like you’d expect a royal physician to be. Diagnosed her and totally nailed it. After so many royal physician scenes over the years this one was a breath of fresh air.
“Considering that I may die here, I will only say what I will not regret.” WOW did Bangwon ever step up! Enormous cojonés the way he went in there and didn’t even flinch in front of the emperor. I wish we had seen more of the Ming trip, especially since they teased the second visit. But at least we got the one scene, and it certainly showed us something about his character. Well done.
Anybody else notice the size of Jeong Dojeon's domestic staff? In the JD series he lived in a much humbler home.
The best scene in the episode, once again Bangwon and his wife, this time at the pier when he returns. The slow-motion replays of the hug were silly, and so was Lee Hwasang acting goofy. But the two of them together, how she was coming to the pier every day for him, and then the talk they had on the pier about the insight that he gained—"It was worth risking my life”—this is the best stuff in the series right now. Top-notch writing.
Crown prince, to Bangwon who’s standing there right in front of him: “Have you returned safely?” If Jeong Dojeon is tutoring this kid then the queen should ask for her money back.
Queen: “He just had to come back alive. He just had to.” That was very funny. Lee Hwasang is not funny. This was funny.
The scenes at the city gate were nicely filmed. The visuals continue to be very strong.
The ending...So Bangwon just waltzes into the queen’s bedroom like it’s open to the public, with no explanation. How about that. And okay I can buy the idea that the queen even on her deathbed would be filled with desperate rage at the thought of Bangwon menacing her son, even after he told her he wouldn’t do it...but the way this worked out, perfectly at the end of the episode, with her hands around his throat just as LSG walks into the room ...this was absurd. The only way they can possibly get out of this one is if it’s a dream sequence, and that would be a cheap stunt. Blecch.

They weren't killed by swords. King Gongyang was hung to death along with his son(the Crown Prince from earlier episode). Gongyang's younger brother survived because he was the father-in-law of Lee Banggbeon. Unfortunately, his children were killed off for being in-laws of Lee Banggbeon during LBW's coup. The only way they can possibly get out of this one is if it’s a dream sequence, and that would be a cheap stunt. Blecch. I have a feeling that it's either a dream or hallucination. She's probably strangling Bangbeon or Bangseok in reality.

I recall in GKS that the ship Wang clan members were on sunk thanks to sabotage, causing them to drown.

I sure was disappointed that the queen didn't cough up blood. I agree that the last scene only makes sense if it is a hallucination. King walks in and sees her trying to strangle the Crown Prince. Oh that naughty princess. Didn't the Crown Princess in GKS have a similar problem with hubby not showing any interest in her? So she dallied with her girlfriends.

Yes, she is known as the first lesbian or bisexual Crown Princess in Korean history for her affair with a girl. I have to give benefit of the doubt to Bangseok's Crown Princess though. Both Sejong's Crown Prince and Crown Princess are about the same age, but there is about a 5 year old age gap between Bangseok and his Crown Princess. This drama's Bangseok is played by a 20 years old actor, but he is actually only 12 at this point of the drama. Crown Princess was around 17 or 18. She couldn't wait for Bangseok to get older I guess.

In this show, before he became king, Yi Seonggye's household was also larger and fancier than the one in JDJ. Also, in the scene where Yi Bangwon is talking to the Ming emperor, I think greenscreen is being used.

Definitely, the house LSG has here is like a party estate! How many people were at that big bash they had? Seemed like half the capital was there.
I remember that about the boat sinking the Wangs in GKS--it was in a flashback in the second episode. Not only did they sink the boat but they had other ships nearby and were launching flaming arrows at it. Of course if you're firing them at a sinking boat then the water will put them out...gotta love TV!

Finally caught up . They are just rushing through history at a brisk pace . I was glad Bangwon’s trip to Ming did not drag on for several episodes but was concluded quickly .
The ending was a bit much . It’s good drama but that scene was cringeworthy .
The Crown Princess affair was a pleasant diversion .
I hope KBS bring it back and do not drop it . They have been slow to resolve this whole issue .

Sorry to hijack this. Can't find the DYJ thread. Thought you all might like to know they're livestreaming DJY now on Youtube. Yeon Gaesoman and Yang Manchun are still alive, so still kind of early on.

All of the past boards are in alphabetical order in the "Off Air" category, that's the place to find them.

DJY was like a live comic book in a way . It had dastardly villains and upstanding heroes . Who can forget the bad guys constantly screaming “ Dayyyyyyyyy Jo Young “ .
I did really like it at the time and still do to an extent .
