Is it historically accurate or an artistic license that the sons from Lady Han were excluded from the coronation?
I know Yi Bangwon was excluded from being a contributor to the new dynasty foundation.

Is it historically accurate or an artistic license that the sons from Lady Han were excluded from the coronation? It's neither accurate nor inaccurate. Historical record doesn't say sons from Lady Han were excluded, but it also doesn't say they were included. There's no record about sons being included or excluded from coronation in historical records.

I was going to start with a comment about why LSG is letting his wife control him like this. But itβs a family board so maybe it doesnβt belong here. Too bad, made me laugh.... To be fair, we know that LSG did eventually stiff his first wifeβs sons and name Bang Seon the crown prince. Apparently itβs also known that Lady Kang did have her husbandβs ear and did talk with him a lot about state affairs. So itβs not unreasonable to think sheβd have pushed hard to have one of her own sons named crown prince. In fact from what weβve seen in other historicals over the years, itβs almost expected. The problem is, the way they portrayed it here, it made LSG look like a goof. Heβs so wrapped around her little finger that on his first day as king he sneaks her into the palace in secret, and hides her behind a wall so she can ambush-nag ministers who react in a disturbed, surprised way to something thatβs disturbing and surprising. Seriously? It went way too far over the top. It made me think of the Chinese empress in Shin Donβshe would get her husband's bed loaded up with hot young women and then get him all gorked up on aphrodisiacs, and then she could do whatever she wanted to run the country. It made him look like a goof too--and she got her son a crown prince gig as well. So thereβs precedent for this kind of a portrayal...but making LSG look so silly, I didnβt care for it. β In the seventh lunar month of the year 1392, King Gongyang was dethroned and exiled to Wonju with the crown prince. The people of Gaegyeong wailed as their king left the capital. And thus Goryeo ended, after 34 kings and 475 years.
That was an excellent little scene there. We need some reminders that people werenβt exactly jumping up and down for joy when the dynasty was ended. On the other hand...the sequence where LSG took the royal seal, you could see they shot it out of order because the sunlight kept changing positions from one shot to the next, or even disappearing and reappearing. Sloppy sloppy. β In the seventh lunar month of the year 1392, four years after the Wihwado Retreat, Lee Seong Gye rose to the throne. Lee Seong Gyeβs family, who had worked for the great work, started to split from that day. βI will be reassured if I left the military to him.β Hmm, so youβre going to stiff him as crown prince but give him the military? What could possibly go wrong there? Itβs not like anybody with military authority ever got pissed off at the king and staged a military coup...naaaahhh.... βYou went against your father just this one time. And your father cares about only that one?β Kinda icky that LSG is so warm and grateful to Jeong Dojeon right after he gives his own sons the cold shoulder. It sort of feels like we missed part of the story. Even if heβs still mad at Bangwon, what did the others do that made them so suddenly toxic that dad wouldnβt even let them into his own coronation? Didnβt it occur to him that it would make him look like a terrible father in front of the entire country? Whether or not we know if this actually happened, whichever you portray, it sould be explained properly. So no, wasnβt a fan of this one, not as good as the previous two. The real story gets so interesting by this point, hopefully they stop the gimmicks and just tell it.

It took nine episodes to get to the creation of the Joseon dynasty. How long will the other historical events take I wonder.

Yeah exactly--they're not leaving themselves much time to have Bangwon on the throne, are they.
Maybe that's not their plan. We assume we'll see him as king because it's in the title of the series but maybe not.

I think they have time, Chudong had Bangwon on the Throne by Ep 20 and managed to reach when he handed down to Sejong in Ep 27 (I watched a couple episodes when MBC ON reran it in Jan 2019), although to be fair they crammed a lot in there, even when Taejo moved to Hamgyeong...

Seriously? It went way too far over the top. Historically, all she did was just crying hysterically behind the wall when Jo Jun recommended LBW as Crown Prince. This drama took liberty by changing it to the scene you described. Her crying may have moved LSG to choose Bangseok as Crown Prince. On the other hand...the sequence where LSG took the royal seal, you could see they shot it out of order because the sunlight kept changing positions from one shot to the next, or even disappearing and reappearing. I'll point out a historical mistake in this scene. Jeong Dojeon is shown to be the man to bring the royal seal to LSG in this drama, but it was actually Bae Geukryeum who brought the seal to LSG in history. Bae Geukryeum does not make an appearance in this drama at all. The JD drama was more accurate as it showed Bae Geukryeum(played by the actor who played Choi Young in the current series) as the man to bring the royal seal to LSG. Even if heβs still mad at Bangwon, what did the others do that made them so suddenly toxic that dad wouldnβt even let them into his own coronation? They were backing him the whole time. The 3rd and 4th son even beheaded Jeong Mongju after his death. I'm talking about what happened in this drama. We don't know who beheaded Jeong Mongju in actual history.

Understood--and I appreciate your sharing these details, they matter. Do you know, how common was it for a queen (and Mrs. Kang wasn't the queen yet, but whatever) to be listening in on a state meeting like this? I've always been under the impression that it was rare...would there be exceptions when family matters were discussed? And to have her hiding behind a wall, was that the practice for it?

I'm not an expert, but it doesn't look like queens were expected to listen in on state meetings.
And if they did, more acceptable situations would be if she was being a regent for her son the king while in the royal court.

Not very common. I think it was different for LSG and Lady Kang because LSG was not born a royal. He spent his entire life as a military general and only became king because people like Jeong Dojeon and Jo Jun convinced him to. He had no knowledge about royal customs or how to behave like a king. LSG probably acted the same way he did before becoming king and just let his wife listen to the meeting if she wanted to.
