Yeah somebody is going to have to step forward and explain this. Some horses are really good and can be trained to do amazing things, and we've seen horses take falls in other series, but not like that. That definitely does not look like any sort of training or trick, it just looks mean and dangerous.
And there wasn't even any kind of padding under the ground cover for the stuntman. He's lucky he didn't break his neck, same as the horse.

That definitely does not look like any sort of training or trick, it just looks mean and dangerous. Just learned that the horse used in this scene died a week after this scene was filmed. They also don't use horses trained well enough to take those type of tricks for KBS historicals. All horses used are cheap old horses. Not just for this show, but for every historicals KBS ever created.

Oh that is just awful, the poor thing. And totally unnecessary. You can stitch together glimpses that give the clear impression of a character taking a fall without actually doing it. Hoof kicks a rock, stuntman airborne off a trampoline or whatever, then a shot of a horse getting up off the ground, we get the idea.
I hope people get as angry about this as they did with that overblown business about Joseon Exorcist.
Thanks for the update about it. If you hear anything more please do keep us posted.
p.s. Do you know if LSG was a drinker in real history? In Jeong Dojeon they really leaned hard on it, so hard that I assumed it must have been known that he was a heavy drinker, and didn't even question it.

Hang on, we have an update...this was posted on the Soompi website: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ KBS Apologizes After Horse Dies From Injury On Set Of “The King Of Tears, Lee Bang Won”Jan 20, 2022 by C. HongKBS has issued an apology after an animal abuse controversy arose over a horse being injured on the set of “The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won.” “The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won” is a traditional epic sageuk about King Taejong, born Lee Bang Won, who helped his father overthrow the Goryeo Dynasty and establish the Joseon Dynasty. A traditional epic sageuk is a historical drama that typically involves a large budget and cast, a long-running storyline, and depictions of real historical events and figures. Viewers raised concerns with the Korean Animal Welfare Association (KAWA) over a potential animal abuse issue in a scene that aired in “The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won.” In the scene, actor Kim Young Chul‘s character, Lee Seong Gye, was thrown from his horse while riding. To create this scene, the horse was pulled to the ground using a rope tied around its legs. On January 20, KBS issued the following statement: We apologize. Regarding the accident that occurred during filming for ‘The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won,’ we take grave responsibility and apologize. The accident occurred during the November 2 filming of Lee Seong Gye’s fall from his horse that aired in episode 7. It is very difficult to film a fall from a horse. The horse’s safety is fundamental, and we also have to consider the safety of the actor on the horse and the safety of the crew members filming the scene. Because of this, the production staff spent several days preparing for the scene in order to prevent any accidents from potentially occurring. Despite this preparation, during the actual filming, an accident occurred in which the actor was thrown hard from the horse and the horse’s upper body struck the ground with great force. After the accident, the horse got up under its own power, and we checked to see that it had no external injuries before returning it. However, as viewers recently began to express concern for the horse’s current condition, we checked the horse’s condition again, and we regret to say that the horse died about a week after the filming occurred. We cannot help but take serious responsibility for this unfortunate incident hat has occurred. We apologize to the viewers for not preventing this accident and causing such an unfortunate event. Through this accident, KBS recognizes that there is a problem with the way that scenes of falling from a horse are filmed. In order to prevent such an incident from occurring again, we will find another way to film and portray these scenes. We will also cooperate with the advice of experts on how filming of various kinds can be safely conducted with animals on set. We sincerely apologize once again to the viewers and those who love animals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ www.soompi.com/article/1509247wpp/kbs-apologizes-after-horse-dies-from-injury-on-set-of-the-king-of-tears-lee-bang-won

Looks like this drama might not be the only one that used such technique in filming a falling horse scene. theqoo.net/square/2319431307List of scenes from Korean historicals that may have done the same thing. The first gif file from the link is Lee Bangwon. Names of other dramas/film in order: KBS King's Affection The Great Battle (film) KBS Jeong Dojeon MBC Gyebaek p.s. Do you know if LSG was a drinker in real history? In Jeong Dojeon they really leaned hard on it, so hard that I assumed it must have been known that he was a heavy drinker, and didn't even question it. No. That part is fiction. We don't know whether he was a heavy drinker or not.

No episodes will air this week due to the recent controversy.
Hope the show doesn't get canceled completely like Joseon Exorcist.
If this gets canceled, there is no hope for traditional. We will probably never have a traditional historical again.

Yeah I certainly didn't mean to imply that people should demand the show be cancelled, let's hope it doesn't get anywhere near that.
The sad part is how totally unnecessary it was to do the fall the way they did it. Even if they wanted to shoot an actual fall, just have the horse rear back and toss the guy backwards--like it spotted a tiger or something scary in the woods. That would be perfectly natural.
Hopefully KBS steps up and promises major changes from now on, and delivers.

In LA, this episode aired on Saturday 2/5. It's running time was very long, over 40 minutes! And they did NOT show the accident scene. The first thing mentioned was when a messenger came to Mrs. Bangwon and told her what happened. Actually, it was well done, and I didn't feel I missed anything (especially since I'd seen that scene in JDJ already). If this is the version issued for worldwide/DVD distribution it should be OK.
