AD 1388 was he 14th year of reign by King Woo of Goryeo. General Lee Seong Gye marched north to invade the Liaodong Peninsula, but he halted the army and requested retreat. Among the people of Gaegyeong, a rumor spread fast that Lee would soon rise in revolt. General Lee Seong Gye was accompanied by his sons, Bang Ui and Bang Gan. Lee’s first and second sons had been taken hostages by King Woo.

AD 1388 was the 14th year of reign by King Woo of Goryeo. Lee Seong Gye returned his army from Wihwado and captured Gaegyeong. The fate of Goryeo fluctuated. The family of Lee Seong Gye, as leaders of the turbulent shift, took their first step into the turbulent times.
It was in June 1388 by the lunar calendar. King Woo made a failed attempt to kill the generals who led the retreat. He was dethroned and sent to Ganghwado in exile. Then the nine-year-old son of King Woo was enthroned. He is King Chang, the 33rd king of Goryeo.

AD 1389, a year after the Wihwado Retreat, Lee Seong Gye claimed to dethrone a false king to enthrone a true one, making the queen dowager approve the order to dethrone King Chang....King Chang was exiled, demoted to a commoner. Lee Seong Gye then supported Wang Yo, Prince Jeongchan, to become the new king as he was a relative by marriage. He became the last king of Goryeo, King Gongyang.

In 1396 AD, the fifth year of King Taejo’s reign, the first queen of Joseon, Queen Sindeok of the Kang Clan, passed away. With her skillful politics she made her husband Lee Seong Gye the king. She also made her son Bang Seok the crown prince. However, after her death all of her accomplishments started to collapse.
In 1397 AD, the sixth year of King Taejo’s reign, Lee Bangwon[‘s] and Lady Min’s third son was born. This baby later becomes King Sejong the Great. After the Joseon Dynasty was founded, Lee Bangwon was alienated from power for seven years. But du ring those years Lee Bangwon and Lady Min gave birth to three more sons after having lost their children. And from then, Lee Bangwon started to take his steps to move to the throne.

In 1422, the fourth year of King Sejong’s reign, Taejong Lee Bangwon took his last breath. His life was a tragic one stained with blood, but to the people, it was an era of peace. He obtained power for himself and his family, but he ultimately surpassed that and devoted himself to the nation and its people. He accepted politics as his fate. He was a true politician who dedicated himself to the nation. But in his later years, he chose to step down from power, and live the rest of his life as a normal individual.
As Lee Bangwon closed his eyes, it began to rain. Lee Bangwon was laid to rest with his lifelong partner and once sworn enemy, Queen Wongyeong, Lady Min.
