This was a pretty good episode—WG certainly isn’t lighting up the scoreboard yet as the king but the story is still interesting and keeps your attention.
Huhwal: “If you must go, kill me first.” Very nicely written scene. Huhwal should be given anything he wants if he resolves this Myungju trouble, especially considering that WG didn’t seem to have any sort of plan for what to do about it.
WG: “Will my people ever understand me?” Oh stop whining, you baby! Did you seriously expect that there would be no resistance to him, especially from those two regions? Didn’t you hear what the narrator just said about it being foreseeable? Pay attention!
“Anxiety has caused an ailment that has harmed your organs.” Oh this is just awful. I sure was wrong, I figured she was preggers. She’s been such a natural as empress, if she has to take a lower profile it would be a huge loss to WG. Plus she’s sort of kept the other two wives in line and the writers seem to already be setting up all kinds of bickering between those two. Real downer to hear about this.
Bok Jikyum again proving his excellence in his position, setting up that test for Hwan Sungil. Very impressive.
STILL no one has explained to Yi Honnam why Park Sulhee is ideal for Sangju? Okay he did at least know that Sulhee was Ahjagae’s “friend” but that’s not enough?...hmmm, on second thought, if he knows about that and he can see how awkwardly he himself got along with Ahjagae, maybe it’s his own fault for not understanding.
Please don’t tell me that Sulhee’s return will revive Ahjagae and then his daughter will feel obligated to marry him. That would be lousy. If it turns out to be his dying wish...well no that would be lousy too, for her. This whole thing just does not work. An annoyance to the story.
“I could die doing nothing or die trying.” I’m sure what we’re seeing with Hwan Sungil is true historically but it seems sort of sad. He comes across as such a dimwit, you almost feel sorry for him.
WG: “All will work out. We will resolve our problems one by one. We will indeed.” Whatever Suin is giving him in that wine glass, it sure is helping!
■ Chungju: It belonged to Bekjae in the Old Three Kingdoms era. Once the cultural hub during Unified Shilla, it became a point of strategic importance as Korea was divided into Later Three Kingdoms, sharing its border with all three warring states. Chungju played a major role when Goongyae moved his capital to Chulwon. He moved 1,000 households of Chungju to Chulwon to build and occupy the new city, which was partly a strategic maneuver to prevent an uprising of Chungju. But as time passed, people of Chulwon began to take root in Goongyae’s administration, and began to develop a proprietary sentiment towards the imperial city. Considering this, Chungju’s rebellion after Goongyae’s dethronement was foreseeable.
