We’re in a transition period for now and it could linger for a while. So there wasn’t likely to be anything earth-shaking in this one. And there wasn’t. It was okay, but the one thing that kept popping up was how disturbingly surprised and unprepared these guys are to the pockets of resistance that are emerging. Was it really like that or is this just for TV? Cause if it was just for TV then they’re making these guys look dumber than they were.
Taepyoung: “As expected.” Wait, what? You knew Kim Soonshik would kill that envoy and you sent him there anyway? Are you kidding? That is not a good way to start an episode. Immediately it stops your brain in its tracks.
Choi Ung: “General Kim is Master Huhwal’s son. He will not slay his own father.” Now was that so hard? Even I thought of that (and I didn’t send some poor underling to get his head taken off first). UGH!
Ahjagae: “You’re the most credible of all physicians I have seen.” And then thirty seconds later he’s slapping the guy around. And then they play the funny little end-of-scene music. Yeah those lethal tumors are a real hoot, aren’t they?
Then Yi Honnam throws a fit about being transferred away so that Park Sulhee can get his old position back. Did no one explain to him the success that Sulhee had sucking up to Ahjagae? Really? Again with this issue of him not being informed. And then another snippet of funny little end-of-scene music. Apparently a couple of attempts at humor here. Neither worked.
Okay now we’re talking--what a nice scene that was of all of the grateful citizens bringing gifts. Exactly what we need to see a whole lot more of. Which and how many of them throughout the country are friendly towards him and how many aren’t? It would mean so much to get a feel for this. But even aside from that, just the idea that these people were freed from servitude or whatever other good thing was bestowed upon them, and they journeyed to the capital from probably all over so they could offer some small nice gesture to thank their king, that was the highlight of the episode. A great reminder of what the consequences are of all of the goings-on in the high government. Well done.
And hey you two genius finance guys who won’t accept the gifts: find a way to use them to open up the trade that WG wants to open up. Even if you have to compensate the citizens for them, make the most of it. Tiger skins and honey and even ginseng? You can start doing business with these citizens and export the stuff!
So Doyoung is crabbing about her status and her son’s status? She knew the deal when she asked to marry WG. And even her dad is getting caught up on this nonsense now. Shame on her. Not surprising considering what we saw of her back home...and probably not surprising that the women would start jockeying for power when the opportunity arose...but still, you just know that this won’t be pleasant. And you know what, WG blew it here big-time. Why is Doyoung’s kid named the crown prince already? They think Buyong won’t have any kids...are they sure of that? This weird illness Buyong has all of a sudden, well we know what’s coming, don’t we....
p.s. Going back through the episodes after finishing the series, I came across this assessment from Park Yu and thought it was worth adding here. He had been to Bekjae and told WG that “To my surprise, I saw signs of excellent leadership from King Kyun-hwon. His people were content, and the government was tightly controlled.” We didn't really see enough of that side of his reign so Park's assessment is signficant.

■ Park Yu...He was one of the most prominent scholars of the time. Appointed to oversee the education of Goongyae’s sons, he had gone into hiding after Goongyae’s tyranny became extreme. Wang Guhn, who was extremely concerned for his popularity at the time, could not be more thrilled when Park Yu returned. Wang Guhn would bestow his last name upon him, and would assign him important tasks of mentoring his children and handling classified government documents.
