“I cannot find my footing, so I have chosen Naju.” Wow. Never expected WG to say he was fleeing. Not only that but it does show that he’s much more concerned about the political realities going on here than he’s showed. Big surprise.
Yunhwa: “His illness is cured, they say? They couldn’t be more wrong. He is filled with suspicion and ill will...He is a madman constantly testing himself to see how cold and cruel he can get.” Frankly that’s tough to prove based on what we’ve been seeing lately. Goongyae seems a lot more calm and clear-headed.
Yunhwa to WG: “You are a difficult man as I thought.” Well what did she expect? Hasn’t she been watching the series? HA!
“He has been taken off the duty of imperial guardian and is going off to fight a war! It is a form of reproach and he should be humble.” This wasn’t entirely clear before but obviously he no longer holds the IG position.
Eunbu: “I planted an informer among her escorts.” Just like that? Somebody shows up to work for the empress and immediately gets to be within a few feet of a room where she and WG are having a private meeting? Yecch. I’ve never been a big fan of eavesdropping scenes and this one was particularly hard to digest. I wish they had come up with a better way to write that.
Goongyae: “He made a condolence call to the empress’s family despite my hint of displeasure. Why did he?” Hint of displeasure? I sure didn’t pick up on any such thing when WG asked him about this...did anybody else? Yeah it was a touchy subject so Goongyae wasn’t smiley-happy about it but I saw nothing to suggest displeasure.
“”Empress is human. She could not have meant it.” That was a terrific scene. Especially the way they had Choi Ung there silently reacting to it all. Excellent work by the director.
Choi Seung Woo: “It appears that Goongyae’s tyranny is getting worse.” Okay now this has become a real problem. It seems obvious to everyone in the series that Goongyae is getting nastier and nastier—but we’re not seeing this at all! Before he took that medicine he was doing wildly impulsive things like killing those women who giggled at the clumsy soldier, or the coughing minister before that. He’s done nothing of the sort since his treatment, and he also hasn’t been talking about having to drop the hammer on all of his untrustworthy subjects like he did previously. And even his struggles trying to think through all of the chargers and accusations and innuendos, you can definitely see his side of it more than before. This isn’t all bad—in fact the way that the suspicions are building towards WG, it’s turned into a fascinating storyline of how people are trying to spin things in their favor and how Goongyae is trying to sort through it all—but if he in fact is even more power-mad and tyrannical than before, we should be seeing evidence of it. We’re not.
Just that little moment in Bekjae where Kyun-hwon takes the hand of Kobe’s son, and the empress puckers and Kobe smiles...Hmm is this going to flare up again? KH isn’t getting any younger....
Look at WG’s son! Wow has that much time passed? I was shocked at how big he’s gotten.
WG: “Yes there is malfeasance in the court. But in such times it is better to stay devoted to your duties and preserve yourself.” That was a striking moment for me because he spoke to all of them with a great deal of authority, it made an instant impression. Very leader-like...but it was just for a moment because then everybody in the room made that big collective Harrumph! noise and squirmed. It was hilarious but didn’t make WG look all that great.
So wait, Park Sulhee has been making regular visits to Sangju this whole time and sucking up to crazy old Ahjagae? Really? Well I guess it’s better late than never to find that out. Poor Daegu, having to put up with that idiot. But you know what, she could always end this by finding some Sangju guy and tying the knot. Probably her father would resist like crazy and forbid it...but she doesn’t seem like the type to be put off by that.
Unless, of course, she’s a lesbian and simply doesn’t want to marry any man. Now wouldn’t THAT be an interesting angle.
So we end with a crying, despairing Yunhwa. You do have to feel sorry for her, she’s in a terrible situation. But she made it a heck of a lot worse for herself by running her mouth off to Goongyae and saying such harsh things, and then whispering treason to WG without considering or caring that it might be overheard by someone. Losing her parents the way she did, you can certainly understand how that affected her judgment, but still...Again big credit to the writers here for giving us a story that isn’t black-and-white about who’s right or wrong. Not easy to write but very well done.
