Jeong Yak Yong has OFFICIALLY been CANCELLED. Until future announcements, Imjin War 1592 will be our last traditional historical. I previously posted that KBS might just get rid of their traditional historical series in the near future and I think it's actually on the verge of becoming true. It's official. Traditional weekend historical will be returning on December of this year after 5 year hiatus. The main character of the drama will be King Taejong(a.k.a Lee Bangwon) It will consist of 32 episodes. Whether this will be a Jeong Dojeon Season 2 picking up from the last episode of Jeong Dojeon, or completely unrelated drama is unknown at this point. If it is an unrelated drama, it could basically just cover the same story covered in Jeong Dojeon and Six Flying Dragons, or it could just be about King Taejong's reign, which would be preferrable in my opinion since I don't want to see a repeat of Jeong Dojeon. No news on cast, director, or writer yet.

What is this strange new world I've woken up to this morning?
Do I have some sort of covid-like disease that's making me hallucinate? Do I step into the light? What is happening??
Or maybe I'm dreaming and haven't really woken up yet...back to bed for a while just to be safe....

Well....this was unexpected
If its a sequel, I wouldn't mind seeing Ahn Jae Mo as Yi Bangwon again.

Holy buckets it's real! WOOHOOOOO!!! Not that I doubted you truth, but spend five years roaming in the desert, sometimes you see mirages. Well good gravy Marie it's way past time this happened. And here I found something that makes it even better...an article from a website called allkpop: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DRAMAS Posted by beansss 2 days agoKBS to begin work on its first full-length historical drama in 5 years per viewers' requestsAKP STAFFAccording to reports on March 23, KBS has finally reached the decision to begin work on its first full-length historical drama in approximately 5 years. One KBS insider revealed, "The broadcasting station is aiming to air a 32-episode full-length series some time at the end of this year." It's also been reported that the upcoming series will take place during the time of King Taejong of Joseon. The last time KBS aired a full-length historical drama series was back in 2015 with 'Jang Yeong Sil', starring Song Il Kook. The recent surge in viewers' requests for KBS to resume its full-length historical drama series comes due to the fact that many broadcasting stations have stirred up controversy for their "fictional" historical dramas. Many "fictional" or "fusion" historical drama series in recent years have bought criticism from viewers for false depictions of historical figures, exaggeration of historical events, and controversial comedic portrayals of history, during a public climate where many Korean citizens consider the protection of Korean history to be a serious and solemn matter. KBS is expected to begin casting soon for its upcoming full-length historical drama series, based off of real figures and events. www.allkpop.com/article/2021/03/kbs-to-begin-work-on-its-first-full-length-historical-drama-in-5-years-per-viewers-requests?__cf_chl_jschl_tk__=2701090eec4e91a938a2aca80b3e025dec29cbd0-1616623812-0-Ac7bm0pcZnJfc5e_MZK9VlSMJEakxV1ONqeeTdkVo9Jy4XZCuR18E53zuUkLYV_p2qsgxmAGgHl8MNHhy8vWDiDEYifLzFidEuNZAbmdLVqPbHX5atqKto8GIPSY0hz0VPMX8VDeUIb4fpx7rGlS6-dp1yKcgqqVjTcDPlxKHb1mQ0FWdORSWqSqtSJhUBiX2BrEvpiVRXfIzfLFN_qm8YEzQudazUuLr94pPvptyayYJzpabfp6kNbnksK_hzDnmsx9n5-VTsAA4xlPx_cRtA4n7PrAzZKW5dis9Zl5DgYjcXHtcrjmx9fo35fXRxdBWiq6mmAx42s-5M_vFDElFzLjUJs1vASpyZlPDOFVKUEPW-SrxDA3_5CQtuXKdhJXEZvQ_MfiBsTWuV9DLwKQAGU-y5XTZCoNkKc6vyo7z0qyvqL-8NLnuZoB0Xpj6-JHP6i_WDAVZ-0Smg2JXqR5qMs------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So it wasn't just us here grumbling and snapping about crappy non-historical historicals. Sounds like a lot of smart, strong voices were heard and put the pressure on to make this happen. Hooray hooray. I'll start pestering the KBS station here in Chicago to see if we can get this on the air when people can actually watch it (as opposed to hiding it at 3 in the morning)...but we also have other options to watch it if they won't come through. I'm not big on promoting the Dramacool-type sites but at least it's an option and no doubt people will post the episodes there. So this will be a lot easier viewing than we used to struggle with. Not terribly thrilled with the choice of content, frankly...is it going to be Tears of the Dragon lite? We already have Jeong Dojeon and Great King Sejong and yes definitely it would be better to not revisit that material. Tears of the Dragon was 25 years ago so maybe they think it's fair game by now. Well whatever, anything at all will be wonderful after this ridiculously long wait. Yippee!

I just didn't want to mention it here until it became official to prevent taking away everyone's hopes and dreams if the rumor wasn't real. Rumor started becoming more towards real news 2 months ago, when there was an article on KBS thinking about returning a traditional historical with 3 possible choices as main character. 1. King Jeongjo of Joseon(Jeong Yak Yong, which was supposed to air in 2017, would have covered his era had it not been canceled) 2. King Taejong of Joseon 3. Emperor Hyeonjong of Goryeo (Era covered in IE, but Empress Cheonchu was the main character in IE) Once again, I didn't want to post anything here until KBS released an official article.

I think the recent historical distortion scandal with SBS Joseon Exorcist might have contributed in KBS's decision to choose King Taejong as main character in order to show that KBS is capable of producing an accurate portrayal of King Taejong while SBS is out there distorting history. It's pretty easy topic for KBS to choose to be honest. They have over 25 years of experience with the character beginning with Tears of Dragon, Great King Sejong, and most recently Jeong Dojeon. They already have the accurate costumes of the era from Jeong Dojeon sitting in their storage, so no need to create some bs fantasy costumes. With Emperor Hyeonjong, they would have to create all new costumes and armors, and do a new historical research. Yes, they have costumes from IE, but many of them, especially the fantasy armors, were very inaccurate and Korean viewers are growing tired of fantasy elements. The main plot of IE depicting Empress Cheonchu as a great heroine warrior is obviously 100% false, so they would have to do a thorough historical research to make the drama as accurately as possible. Cheonchu would of course be a villain in this drama if KBS chose to make this one, which would be a closer depiction of the historical figure.

Yeah I had the same thought--that Taejong period is well-trod ground for them and they know people will watch, so it's a safe choice for the first one. Still it's disappointing that they didn't do Jeong Yak Yong. There really needs to be a Jeong Dojeon-type true-to-history drama about those years, plus they already had it in the planning stage. Oh well, maybe the next one.

My god a real historical ! . Ill take it .It may be a rehash of past glories but its still better than this fusion stuff . Its KBS which is really great . Ill watch it regardless .
Joseon Exorcist i saw part of that. i can see why people got pissed off. The Kingdom is the benchmark for this type of period horror and its going to be a long long time before it gets beaten so why bother ? . putting aside all the historical liberties and pro-China stuff, its still Kingdom lite. .

I guess it was too much to expect Ahn Jae-mo to reprise his role as Yi Bangwon.
Depending on how this adaptation of history goes, I might not watch some of it because I've seen that part of history done at least twice, such as Jeong Mongju and Jeong Dojeon's deaths, the downfall of the Goryeo royal family, or the Wihwado Retreat.
Joo Sangwook as Yi Bangwon is actually a good choice.
Kim Yeongcheol as Yi Seonggye? Is this just going to be a thing? Actors who played Yi Bangwon later playing their father? Does this mean Ahn Jaemo will play Yi Seonggye in the future?
Any word on who the director and writer are?

Yeah we got the heads-up about this one from truth a while back...wish they would have picked something that hadn't been done repeatedly already but I can understand why they did. Hopefully this one gets a good reception and maybe gives them some confidence to branch out more.
I don't like them casting Kim Yeongcheol in that part. No question he's fantastic--his Goongyae performance is off the charts--but he's played Taejong twice and I don't like seeing the same people in the same period dramas over and over. Get a new person in there.

I'd look forward to seeing this, since I couldn't get through Tears of the Dragon (no subs). It would be good to see a new straight-up historical with none of the silliness or fusion elements of recent ones.

Get a new person in there. I agree, Taejong twice plus he played Taejo in My Country, people are going to see him in that dragon robe and change the channel. If they have to choose someone with experience in historicals, then someone who's never specifically been famous for a Daeha, like Cheon Ho Jin or Jeon No Min would be a better choice.

Now the question is the portrayal of Yi Bangwon. Specifically a someone who has done terrible things but is sympathetic to the audience. Tears of the Dragon and Great King Sejong did that-in the case of Tears of the Dragon, what little I have seen.
But will this version amp up his sympathetic traits and/or downplay his more negative traits?
The roles Joo Sangwook has played included despicable men or on some occassion sympathetic person who does terrible things, but that all depends on how he's written.
They'll probably keep the "I did what I had to do" mentality.
