Clearly nobody’s going to talk WG out of going to Mrs. Kang’s wake. But why doesn’t somebody simply ask him to run it by Goongyae first? If Goongyae really is a “man of compassion” like WG says then he’ll be fine with it and there’s no problem. If Goongyae flinches, well then WG knows he’s got a problem.
But I did like the attendant coming to see WG, that was a nice scene. That’s the kind of slice-of-life thing that makes a series more interesting.
They keep calling him “Captain” Yim but he was addressed as a general a while back. Maybe his rank is general but his job title is captain? Not sure if that's how it can work.
We got to this and I had to stop and rerun it a bunch of times.
WOW what an image! The colorful royal procession amid the monotone grayness of the village, and the villagers prostrate along the street, was anybody else as struck by it as I was? It’s a shame they didn’t linger on it a while longer and just show it going through the countryside for a bit. Yes certainly they wanted to get to the conversation in the carriage, understandable...Just an amazing visual that they obviously went to a lot of trouble to set up and capture. Blew me away.
“We’d freely stretch northward if we did not have to contend with Shilla and Bekjae. But you are right. Our priority is the unification of the Three Kingdoms.” Goongyae is looking and thinking better than we’ve seen in a long, long time. It sure seemed like either his panic attacks or his drinking would kill him eventually, but not only has he recovered from the illness but he’s even reflecting honestly on his northern conquest mistakes. This is episode 111 and it’s still very much The Goongyae Show, and he certainly seems like he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Who’d have thought it?
So how about that, WG asks Goongyae about the wake himself! Good for him--clears the air, answers the question. Smart move. Maybe he's learned from past mistakes?
Geez that banquet was a total suck-up fest. But at least Goongyae isn’t calling Hwan Sungil stupid like he did before. Yeah he’s the king but he could certainly apologize for that one, considering what Hwan accomplished here.
Hmmmm...spoiler at the end there, and if that is actually depicted in the series then it will be interesting to see how it compares to Goongyae’s forced conscription of citizens to build Chulwon. Nobody was very happy about that one, remember.
You think Oh Darin and Doyoung and the generals down there in Naju should be talking so freely about how the military friction they’re creating is just an excuse to get WG down there? If that gets back to Goongyae then it’s gonna be a bad day for WG. They need to keep their mouths shut.
But give them credit, they’re making everybody in Bekjae scratch their heads and try to figure out what the heck is going on. Very entertaining!
This General Ji Hwon who’s overseeing the Naju border for Kyun-hwon, he’s a smart guy. Analyzing the situation accurately and not doing anything stupid like Sudal did.
“I acted in haste. We are not ready to take Daeya.” Okay so now we’re back to Kyun-hwon The Wise. I complained about this a couple of weeks ago and faulted the writing...but on second thought that was probably unfair. The events that we’re seeing in weekly episodes, they took place years apart and lessons can be learned and forgotten over stretches of years. Especially when you’re the king and can do what you want, and there’s something you really want a lot, and everybody’s telling you it can be done. So I take back the complaint because yeah it’s not unrealistic.
They spoiled this once already. There’s nothing to gain by telling us this in advance once, let alone twice. Boooooo.
Give Choi Ung a lot of credit for trying to get Goongyae to be magnanimous and go to his mother-in-law’s wake. He probably doesn’t get many opportunities to speak his mind out about something, and this wasn’t something that he had anything to gain personally from, nor was it something he’d be likely to make any headway on either. But you can see his point, and he felt strongly enough about it to offer the advice unsolicited. Gained a whole lot of new respect from me there.
Still, Goongyae isn’t wrong about this either. Big credit to the writers for giving us sophisticated material and not falling back on clichés.
Yunhwa: “Aren’t you running away because you are afraid of the emperor?” Whoa, now she’s mouthing off to WG? And after he stuck his neck out and came to the wake? You can understand why she’s upset but she’d better cool it. Unless she’s trying to get herself kicked out of the palace and divorced or de-empress-ed or whatever you’d call it...which maybe is what she’s hoping for, consciously or unconsciously.
Excellent episode. Even with Goongyae still the main character this far along, it all continues to be first-rate.

■ We continue to highlight Goongyae’s northward expansion policy because there [is much] evidence of his unyielding determination. As he founded Koryo in 901 A.D., he declared, “Erstwhile Shilla conspired with Tang and destroyed Koguryo. I will take vengeance, for now the old capital Pyongyang is riddled with grass.” WG would also recognize the importance of this policy, and stations a large military garrison force under the command of his cousin Wang Shikryum on the year he is brought to the throne. Two years later, he would declare Pyongyang “The West Capital” and move the inhabitants of many neighboring villages to develop and fortify the metropolis.

■ Kyun-hwon’s second attempt to conquer Daeya Fort goes to fail once again. Daeya Fort was the last pride of Shilla that they would not let go. But KH’s determination was also strong, and in the year 980, at the age of 54, he would at last succeed in capturing Daeya Fort.
