Kyun-hwon: “He was my brother ten times more precious than either of you.” Well what kid doesn’t want to hear that from a parent. Ugh. Yes the princes’’ recklessness is what got them into that mess in the first place, but they did it because they were trying so hard to get their father’s respect back. You can’t feel sorry for KH because this all happened before, almost exactly the same way, and he obviously didn’t learn from it.
A lot of women get bad deals in this series but princes seem to be another unfortunate group. These two, Goongyae’s two boys, even Goongyae himself being driven out of Shilla.
So we go to Naju and get another massive dose of flaming arrows. Please guys, no more flaming arrows for a while okay? But this certainly was an impressive image, and there doesn't appear to be any CGI in it:
Eunbu to Goongyae: “Wang Guhn is better suited for the battlefield than the palace, especially Naju.” Well that took some cojones right there, surprised Eunbu spoke right up like that...and whatever selfish motives he and Jongkahn may have, he happens to be right.
So much surprise that Mrs. Kang committed suicide. Her husband is a convicted traitor, fairly or otherwise...I seem to remember entire families of traitors being executed. Very sad, no question, but it seemed odd that people were so shocked by it.
And for that matter, everyone is so shocked that Goongyae had Lord Kang executed, like the father-in-law should avoid the same punishment that anyone else convicted of treason would get. Goongyae saying no one is above the law and everyone should be punished the same, it’s weird that nobody would accept that idea from him. Of course we’re judging them as contemporary Westerners and the idea of equality under the law has been in our world for a long time. But not one person has agreed with him or even said they see his side of it.
Goongyae: “Why did she kill herself?” Really dude?
Yunhwa: “Why would anyone harbor thoughts of mutiny if you did your job?” OOOOH....A lot of her anger has been on seemingly shaky ground but wow did she throw a grenade with that one. What she said still doesn’t excuse her father, but it sure did remind us that the frustration people have with Goongyae is still out there and very real.
“You continue to amaze me. God has sent you here to help me.” I said this once before but General Yim must really be a gullible sap to not even wonder about this monk who has such a deep knowledge of everything going on in government and has detailed plans for everything. Nobody has ever warned him about the possibility that enemy agents might try to infiltrate the kingdom and cause dissension? I doubt that; he’s a freaking general.
“Wang Guhn lives by his own standard of conduct. Is that clear?” His advisors have pushed him on this sort of thing in the past and he’s overruled them, and you could respect him for his principles...But here? This courtesy call is not an important enough matter and it could cause big problems if he goes ahead with it. And he’s being so hard-headed about it that he’s even talking about himself in the third person like a weirdo. Not smart.
If it weren’t for her sons you’d wonder if Yunhwa might follow her mom’s lead and hang herself just to stick it to Goongyae. But she wants to protect her sons as best she can, clearly. Hard to see where this is going but it's going to get worse before it can get better.
