This one started off with some confusion. The deal with Lord Kang was that Goongyae was pressuring him over that whole what-are-you-hiding-about-Wang-Guhn-and-Yunhwa business. But now here at the public hearing it’s suddenly about him denying plotting against Goongyae...and of course we all saw him doing it with Ahjitae. We were feeling a little sorry for Kang for his predicament but now he just looks like an idiot for denying the truth when Goongyae knows better. Is this just me or did we take a wild swerve all of a sudden? Hmmm....
Goongyae: “Yes but you did not speak soon enough. Kill Neungdal as well.” Now that was a dumb move! How can he expect anyone in any similar future situation to speak the truth if they know it will do them no good? Not smart.
A really good moment there when you could see Goongyae hesitate and sincerely think about what to do...and then the final moment of resignation in Lord Kang’s face. Very nice.
Commander Yim: “Imperial Guardian Wang was the mastermind behind your assassination attempt in Song-ak.” Goongyae didn’t believe that the first time, why would Yim think something else would happen now? That’s not a good way to establish your credibility.
“He speaks of a case that your majesty has long ago ruled (on) with your second sight.” I think that was Park Jiyoon; give him a ton of credit for speaking up there. From Goongyae’s subsequent laughter we saw that it wasn’t necessary, but we didn’t know it at that moment. Good for him.
“Sukchong’s followers are here today. But they say Sukchong has never mentioned Wang Guhn’s name as the next Maitreya.” That was a HUGE piece of information that we didn’t know. And those guys got the bad-boy-interrogation treatment too. Maybe this is why Goongyae hasn’t been more troubled by that whole angle.
OK so the monks got executed after all. You can be darned sure that the soldiers this time actually did the job! If only to preserve their own necks.
Nice work by the Yunhwa actress in this one—the meltdown she had, you can totally see a real empress acting like that. And the scene with her sons, it was beautifully scored. Terrific stuff. Obviously the producers brought in some good people as the series went on to get the music up to the level of the rest of the production.
Jongkahn: “Lord Kang was first brought in to be questioned about the empress and Wang Guhn. But he was imprisoned for another crime...What prompted this second inquisition was Ahjitae’s disclosure about the empress and Wang Guhn’s engagement. His majesty’s pride was hurt, and he needed someone to punish. He was sending a message: do not challenge the supreme authority or you will die regardless of who you are.” Well there ya go. It did seem confusing in the beginning and now Jongkahn has sorted it out for us. This series is so very, very good about not leaving strange loose ends hanging out there.
Taepyeong: “It appears that Advisor and Captain Yim have made an agreement in secrecy to cause harm to our master.” Whatever WG is paying this guy, it probably isn’t enough.
That was a good touch, showing Mrs. Kang in her white. Very nice.
“My world is crumbling, and I am with another child.” Are you kidding me? Goongyae spends one more single night with her and she’s knocked up again? This guy is a machine! Every single time!
WG: “The northward army is making excellent progress in the north.” Can we please see a little of this? Or at least get some second-hand details? It sounded like a fascinating challenge, trying to get results with both the carrot and the stick. This is another thing that would help us get out of the capital for some relief and see what’s happening in the country.
The Bekjae crown princes have grown up a bunch, haven’t they?
Wow, talk about a swerve, first Kyun-hwon says We’ll take a cautious approach, then two minutes later he wants an attack within days.
Goongyae: “This one is undoubtedly mine. This child is pure. No one will question the paternity of this child.” So he really thinks this is a real issue floating around out there...that’s pretty revealing, it’s still poking at him pretty hard.
These episodes lately are all so well done that I don’t get as annoyed as I otherwise would get about the story not moving forward enough. Sure seems like things need to be moving forward with WG now that we’re 108 episodes in.

■ Daeya Fort: It was located south of Hopchun. This was a territory of continuous strategic importance since the time of old Three Kingdoms. It was surrounded by Nakdong River to the east, Euryung to the south, Goryung to the north and Guhchan to the west. Surrounded by towering mountains, it was also an invincible natural fortress. The road to Shilla was too long for Bekjae without conquering Daeya, and that was the reason for Kyun-hwon’s enduring efforts.
