Uh-oh, losing camera focus, you know what that means lol....Have to admit they do those in-Goongyae’s-head sequences well.
Hey Goongyae, Eunbu was there with you for three days too, you could have at least thanked him like you thanked Jongkahn.
So the medicine worked? Then gee it probably wasn’t a great idea to behead the guy who made it. Especially if he needs a booster! And Goongyae doesn’t seem the least bit bothered by his having killed the guy who cured him. Yeah that was his fate, oh well...Once again the #1 lesson of historical dramas, never get involved with anything medical.
Yunhwa: “Yes but they should have waited for the medicine to take effect.” THANK you.
WG’s advisors are giving him good advice about what’s happening and the need to protect himself. But in one sense you do have to respect him for consistently refusing to let himself get dragged down into the muck of it all.
This isn’t necessarily a criticism...but doesn’t it seem odd that WG and Goongyae aren’t meeting more frequently? Days go by without any contact between them. WG being the imperial guardian, you’d expect him to be reporting to Goongyae routinely every day. This has seemed strange to me ever since WG got the job.
Nice sequence from those soldiers in Naju! Running up those ladders and weaving among the horses, a lot of effort went into giving us that quick glimpse of activity. Much appreciated.
(Not totally thrilled with this map because it doesn't delineate the Sangju region where Kyun-hwon's father is ruling and giving KH headaches. But it makes the point about Daeya's location.)
Won Kukyu: “This is a crisis. Bekjae is preparing to attack both Naju and Daeya.” Was anybody else surprised that WG didn’t react with at least a little bit of skepticism about that? And not just WG, nobody in the room did either. On the Bekjae side Choi Seung Woo was immediately skeptical of Taebong’s movements and suspected there was another purpose for them. But not here, everybody bought it on its face.
“The guards who carried out the order saw that it was unjust and let us go.” That was a real shocker—I was surprised nobody reacted to it. Some of the inner-circle soldiers disobeyed a direct order from the king and released thirty prisoners who were ordered executed. And nobody batted an eye when it was revealed. Yeah it was a while ago (episode 83) but still...Well I guess we wait and see; maybe it’s too early to judge.
And there they go with the sticks to the legs again. One of these days someone will explain why that’s their torture method of choice. Hopefully. Oh and in case anybody else was unsure of it, the monk who spoke during the torture scene was the rector of Busang Temple, the one who stepped up and spoke when Sukchong was ordered executed in Episode 83. I went back and verified it.
Goongyae: “How could they engage in two battles at once?” Yeah see at least HE smells a rat. Good for him. Come on, why would Bekjae do anything to possibly cause any trouble from Taebong at the very moment they’re trying to do something at the complete other end of their kingdom—something they’ve tried once before to accomplish and failed? When I said last week that Doyoung hasn’t been as annoying lately, maybe that was wishful thinking because she may have created a monster big mess with this plot of hers to get WG sent down to Naju. If it gets back to the capital through other sources that Bekjae took no such action...yikes.
“I’d like to shed my monk’s robe and be seen in attire that displays my grandeur as the emperor from now on.” AWWWW...The robe was a reminder that his origins were way different from any other king ever. Now he just looks like every other king. Kind of a shame, really. Bad decision.
Dowe: “I have come to help you inform against him.” Speaking of people not being skeptical: a guy shows up at Captain Yim’s doorstep trying to bum a cup of tea, and looky here he just happens to have a detailed plot all cooked up that addresses exactly the predicament that Yim is in at the moment. Which just happens to include testifying lies against his kingdom’s most valuable retainer. Okay yes Yim is feeling the heat but he just buys it completely? “What selfish motive could a disciple of Buddha possibly have?” Good heavens. What do you want to bet this guy’s descendants are all covid deniers.
And then Jongkahn buying Yim’s story when he hadn’t revealed it until just now that he’s on the hot seat. All of a sudden everybody’s brains are shutting down. But we can’t really be too critical of this because they’re all feeling the heat ramping up right now and looking for anything favorable to grab onto. So it’s certainly plausible.
Wow what is with that orange robe? He looks like a giant wrapped piece of caramel candy. He may be losing his mind, but hey he's full of chewy goodness! Ugh.
But a good cliffhanger ending, no question. And the series continues to be strong, even after 107 episodes when you wouldn't be surprised to see it faltering here and there. Just as good now as it ever was.

■ Daeya Fort (now Hopchun): Kyun-hwon had once before tried and failed to conquer Daeya Fort in August of 901 at the age of 35. 15 years later in 916 at the age of 50, he would make his second attempt. Daeya was the gateway to Shilla and a point of strategic importance with access to [the] Nakdong River. Taebong’s internal struggle provided a good opportunity for Bekjae to undertake this invasion attempt.
