Wow Jongkahn sure had a bug up his rear, didn’t he? First he scolds the attendant for not giving Goongyae a sedative before anyone knows he needs one. Then he tsk-tsks Choi Ung for not being in the room with Goongyae when Goongyae has ordered him not to be in there. Cranky, cranky. And then he sends in the physician first when Goongyae is in there swinging a sword around. Yet another hazard of the physician job, apparently.
But then the long conversation between Jongkahn and WG, wow was that overdue! And it was very healthy, and just what you expect from the two of them. It wasn’t exactly reasonable for Jongkahn to say the only way he’d fully trust WG is if he got Goongyae healthy again. But otherwise it was an excellent scene, well-written and well-acted, and very necessary at this point for the storyline to be plausible.
It was a surprise to see that Won Kukyu is still the Minister of Military since he was one of Ahjitae’s appointees. And that Yim Chungil is still running the Patrol Guards. You’d sort of expect that they’d have been replaced just by association with Ahjitae.
■ Pyongyang...Though it was not emphasized during this time of fierce contention between the Later Three Kingdoms, Pyongyang is the most important capital in Korean history. It served as a principal city from founding progenitor Tangun in 2333 BC to the Wi-sun Choson Dynasty. In 313 AD Koguryo defeated the Chinese colony of Nanglang, and Pyongyang became Koguryo’s capital for the next 240 years. When Koguryo was defeated by allied forces of Tang and Shilla, Tang had gained control of the city, but now it was left abandoned as internal struggles continued in Tang.
“That too is a northward conquest.” Dang that Taepyeong has some good ideas sometimes.
I wonder why they’re not giving this second master healer a name. Maybe this was a real person and his name wasn’t recorded in the official history.
WG handled that meeting with the military leaders very well. And his being willing to listen to them, that’s the sign of a good leader. He’s botched some things but give him credit here.
Everything was very good about this episode except for the very end. All of the suspense they tried to build up about Goongyae suddenly asking WG about him and Yunhwa...come on, ever since Goongyae heard the claim from Ahjitae everyone knows he’s going to eventually ask WG about it. Of course WG will have a prepared answer ready to go (especially since Jongkahn prompted him on it).
But otherwise this was a good episode, the best one in a while. Just by some of the conversations and meetings it felt like the storyline is moving along nicely now after being a little stagnant. Should set up some lively episodes ahead.
