He still calls me elder.” Gee for a minute there at the beginning it was actually quite touching—Jongkahn helping Goongyae like they were just the two monks wondering the countryside in the old days. But then later we were reminded that Jongkahn refuses to accept reality and it stopped being touching again.
So they dumped the attendant’s body and suppressed the story. Sure hope the guy has no family relying on him. Awful.
Suin: “But should not the first wife bear a child first?” Wow, Buyong sure took the high road. She is such a treasure. WG doesn’t know how lucky he is. But you do get the feeling that the writers are laying seeds for a catfight down the road. Hope I’m wrong because yecch.
Kyun-hwon is still wearing that stupid gold armor. Stop it!
And speaking of wearing things, was I the only one who found Yunhwa’s heart-shaped earrings strangely out of place? Two different colors of them at two different times. They were probably authentic for the time; it just seemed a little frivolous for an empress.
Oh geez here we go again with Taepyoung the genius meteorologist. Ugh.
■ After repeated attempts and failures, drawn-out battle in Naju finally ends with Kyun-hwon returning to the capital in Naju. Joining him in the bitter retreat was Choi Seung Woo, the military advisor and emotional mainstay of Bekjae, who was crushed by the worst defeat of his life. Meanwhile in Chulwon, Goongyae was on his first inspection of the Patrol Guards after renaming his kingdom Taebong.
One thing about this series, nobody seems to have any clue about how to pull off an assassination! The Bekjae guys who tried to kill Goongyae in the under-construction Chulwon, they didn’t make the attempt during his journey when he was completely exposed and out in the open with lots of woodland for cover; they did it in the chaos of the construction zone, which was idiotic. And then the guys who tried to kill Ahjitae by rolling logs at him, and doing it when the imperial traveling party was on the scene, that was almost as bad. And now here, Ahjitae has all of his patrol guard forces marching right by Goongyae, all armed to the teeth, and a perfect distraction presents itself...but he says afterwards he didn’t see a good moment to try it. Seriously? No wonder his own men are turning on him.
I had assumed that the horse bucking and throwing the soldier was part of the assassination plan. Wasn’t until afterwards that we found out it wasn’t. What was the plan then? Must have been a lousy plan!
■ The Chronicles of Koryo describes Goongyae’s brutality like this: Goongyae claimed he was able to read lechery of women with his supernatural mind-reading powers. He prepared an iron club that was three feet long, and used it whenever he wanted to kill. Women trembled in fear, and resentment and anger deepened.
You wonder how authentic that execution scene was. I hope it wasn't just for show because it was extremely difficult to watch. I had to turn away, those poor women.
Why does Yunhwa keep thinking that WG can fix the whole mess? He can’t.
Whatever happens with the plot being exposed, I hope it does something to push the story along because it’s been dragging a little lately. If they’re going to slow the pace down then they should add some flashbacks and remind everyone about all of the good that used to be in Goongyae and how he ended up where he is. The series is so long that even attentive viewers would benefit from a reminder here and there.
