“I pressed too hard at the last sea battle. I got us into this mess by my desire to capture Wang Guhn.” Okay so are we back now to the more measured KH who’s learned from his past mistakes? This is starting to get a little annoying because once again he’s about to push into a battle he should know he can’t win right now. Taepyoung made me laugh, spelling everything out right--KH “continues to make hasty moves” and demoralize his troops and make things worse for himself. But it’s like the guy is two different people right now and they’re not on speaking terms.
This was a surprising image to say the least (click for full size):
Floating pontoons? So the naval force somehow had pontoons ready to make a landing. That must have been a good story, how they got them made and ready. Would like to have learned more about that. And then later in the episode, we’re told that the troops came “upstream.” Was that a continuity error? It didn’t look like anybody was rowing—they were all just floating with the current. Definitely needed more explanation here.
And now KH is actually going to go into battle wearing that garish gold armor? He’d better be darned careful.
Good battle scenes in this one, well done as usual and strong music to go with them. Some nice work with those flaming logs, wow...but please tell me the one horse in there wasn’t actually knocked down with a flaming log. Presumably they set up the stunt safely but wow it sure looked uncomfortably real.
■ Battle of Naju...it was one of the most enduring and intense battles in the history of the Later Three Kingdoms. Wang Guhn and Kyun-hwon engaged in a total of eight battles in Naju between the years 903 and 917, with Kyun-hwon taking one victory and the rest being won by Wang Guhn: The Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms records about the battle in 911: “Enraged by the surrender of Geumsung to Goongyae, Kyun-hwon invaded Geumsung with 3,000 troops, but could not defeat them after ten days of persistent combat.”
Excellent bit of narration to toss in there (and a terrific montage as usual!). So Baekje actually won one against WG, did not know that. Was it the pursuit attempt that we saw here? They certainly came out on top there but not sure if that’s considered a full-out battle.
Well look at that, Doyoung made herself useful, that was a good suggestion about the local troops. See, keep her involved down here in Naju and that’s the best place for her...Oh and now she’s suddenly nauseous, gee whatever could that mean? Can we please get rid of that tired cliche—I’ll bet it even outnumbers cliff-dives.
“What have you done, Geumpil?” Shocked to see him get so reckless and defy orders. Other generals maybe but not him. Frankly WG was too easy on him. And for that matter so was Goongyae.
That was quite an ending. Jongkahn is lucky to get out of there alive...but his looking the other way helped create that situation so it wouldn’t have been entirely inappropriate. I was thinking about how awful that would have been for the attendant’s family...but he’d have been a eunuch, wouldn’t’ he, so never mind.
