Goongyae: “We have infinite territory to stretch out, but they have none.”
Kyun-hwon: “I brought this adversity on myself by being careless.”
Seems strange that both of these guys have blind spots that you wouldn’t think they’d have. Goongyae apparently thinks he can order his military to go north on a war of expansion and they won’t have any issues from the south. The hard numbers show otherwise (I haven’t seen the numbers but you know that Bekjae and Shilla have more than enough military forces to cause Taebong problems from the rear). And now you’ve got Kyun-hwon halfway off his rocker trying to get revenge after we’ve seen him grow from past mistakes and be less inclined to rush into things. I don’t understand why one of his subordinates doesn’t say something like “Goongyae executed Sudal to bait you” or “Sudal would want victory, not haste” or both. But neither of them is in the best mental state right now so I guess we can’t expect clear thinking.
For everybody’s scorecard, here are the changes to the government:
--Lord Park Jil is named Imperial Guardian, a new position that replaces the Supreme Councilor position as the highest ranking civil executive.
--Wang Guhn is named provincial magistrate of Naju and commander of the naval force. More of an affirmation than anything else; not really a promotion.
--The Ministry of Construction is now second in rank, below only the Supreme Council, overseeing all administrative affairs.
--The Patrol Guards is named third-ranking power of government, with Yim Choongil as captain (but they’re still required to report to the Royal Guards so that Goongyae can directly oversee them).
--Lord Won Kukyu replaces Bok Jikyum as new minister of military.
--Shinbang and Ipjun are appointed officers of the Justice Agency (whatever that is).
--Generals Hwan, Lee, Hong, Bae, Kim and Bok Jikyum are generals of cavalry (which most of them already were, I think).
--Tepyoung, Neungsan, Yu Geumpil, Park Sulhee and Kim Eun are all appointed “generals and local chieftains” (again, not sure what exactly this means).
Park Jil and Won Kukyu are completely new to the series; never seen either of them before—so afterwards when some of the military men are complaining, you can understand why.
■ Drastic restructuring of Taebong government...It is further evidence of Goongyae’s continuing struggle. He preserved the Supreme Council as the highest-ranking agency, but elevated the Ministry of Construction to the second, and amplified the emperor’s direct involvement. He also downgraded the military, and elevated the Patrol Guard to the third highest power of government.
Goongyae: “What awaits him if he fails to deliver on the promise when I’ve given him everything he asked for? Ahjitae knows that answer to that question.” Okay so he still has some cleverness and mental acuity in him, actually quite a bit at times. He’s given Ahjitae either the power to accomplish the Northern Conquest or he rope to hang himself with. But if he’s still so sharp, why isn’t he concerned that Ahjitae might use his power to do something desperate and dangerous if he can’t accomplish his assignment? Seems like Goongyae is being naive here. Trusting that everything will be okay just because he has Jongkahn and WG working for him...well this is not the same person who’s been saying that he can’t trust his subjects any more.
Just wondering: Would someone as important as WG travel to a war zone in just a single ship? Seems like he’d be a sitting duck for assassination if Kyun-hwon wanted to try it.
The person Kyun-hwon should be listening to is Gong Jik. He had a good scene in this one; spoke with a level head.
Ah the flaming arrows again...sigh....but you know what, it has to be dangerous as all heck to set up and execute these siege scenes with all of that fire everywhere. This one even had big flaming logs! The nighttime scene here was exceptionally loaded with burning stuff. Once again have to say thanks to the stunt guys and the production people who pull these things off and make them look so good. Unsung heroes of historicals.
Doyoung on KH: “His loyalty is admirable. He has suffered tremendous losses, but still he persists.” And everybody agrees with her? Really? At least WG said “But I do think that the price and the sacrifice is too great.” I don’t agree with her at all. Loyalty is certainly admirable but Sudal is not on this Earth any more to be loyal to.
Finally, it’s vocabulary time! Today’s word is “inexpugnable.” The translator hit us with it and I had never heard it before. Dictionaries say it means impregnable.
