Nothing you can say about the mass scene besides they nailed it perfectly. You knew Sukchong would do something to create a challenge, but other than that it was real edge-of-your-seat stuff. The discordant music at the outset and then the jarring silence with the wind rustling to build the suspense...it all worked. Bravo.
It was good to see Oh Darin again! One of the better supporting characters, and one of the really good actors too.
Tepyoung: “You will lose your life the moment this is known to him. Do you still not understand the meaning of that Ganja?” That sort of just shot right by, but it felt like a really important moment in the series. For the first time WG has some sort of power of his own that puts him at odds with Goongyae, and now WG realizes it. He’s always been strictly the good soldier and loyal subordinate. But now he has a secret and it’s something that Goongyae doesn’t have, and he understands.
Yu Geungdal: “General Wang is not an aggressive man when it comes to his personal matters.” HA! How true!
I like how this series keeps the supporting generals involved. They introduced three new Majin generals in the previous episode, and they all had speaking parts in the military meeting in this episode. We get a lot of this and it really helps with trying to learn all of the characters.
WG: “Why don’t we set up a permanent healing retreat in Choongju to facilitate the [injured] soldiers?” And there again is the kind of thing that’s working to sell WG as a future king despite Choi Soo Jong not being an alpha-male stud like the guys playing Goongyae or Kyun-hwon. So far so good.
Eunbu transferring commander Yum: “You are starting to think. That is why you must go.” Yeah ain’t that always the way....
The scene with Lord Yu and Oh Darin and their daughters was interesting. Well acted and good music. But you know what, the only one who really has any fair right to be unhappy is Buyong. She was supposed to be his wife, as in his only wife. She’s made a huge sacrifice already so you can certainly feel for her right now. Oh Darin and especially Doyoung, well what’s happening now is exactly, exactly, exactly what they took advantage of themselves. Sorry guys but what goes around comes around.
KH: “Shi Huangdi of Qin Dynasty killed his own father for his kingdom.” Did he? This was China’s first emperor. I tried to confirm this but it turns out to be such a complicated story that I let it pass.
This episode brought to mind the Shin Don series, which did a terrific job of creating an atmosphere of utter demoralized misery in Koryo. In this episode things seemed to take another step downwards, from just the-king-is-nutso to a wider sense that the country is in big trouble. Feels like it could still get a lot worse before it gets better.
Goongyae the Maitreya...Only in the ancient world can we find other traces of divine descent of the monarch being claimed. The fact that he was able to do this attests to wide public support in his initial ascension. Although he was now exploiting religion for political control, a great number of people still believe that he was indeed the savior who will deliver them from suffering. And Goongyae wanted to validate this belief.
