Mr. Queen is a fantasy comedy set during the reign of King Cheol Jong. Jang Bong Hwan (Choi Jin Hyuk) travels back in time and finds himself trapped in the body of Kim So Yong (Shin Hye Sun). So Yong is set to marry Cheol Jong (Kim Jung Hyun) and become the next queen of Joseon. Mr. Queen is based on the Chinese series Go Princess Go, which was based on a novel. I never watched Go Princess Go so I don't know how close Mr. Queen follows it. All I know about the original is that it uses fictional characters while Mr. Queen uses real historical figures. Mr. Queen is a comedy with plenty of silliness. Some scenes make little sense but are thrown in for a good laugh. You can't take the series too seriously. You kinda just have to go with it. The series was popular in Korea and with international audiences so I think most viewers did just that.
I liked Shin Hye Sun as So Bong (So Yong & Bong Hwan). I liked Kim Jung Hyun as Cheol Jong. I liked a lot of the scenes between them. I liked the court maids, kitchen staff, etc. TBH, I liked most of the cast. I didn't really have an issue with them. Mr. Queen has the base for a good series. You have the new queen. You have the puppet king. You have the dueling factions. You have corrupt officials. You have the inner workings of the court and palace. Mr. Queen could have easily been about a new queen trying to adjust to life in the palace and everything that comes with it. For some, that might have made it a better watch. Some episodes did feel like filler but I think the series maintained a good balance of comedy, even as things got more serious, which is what got viewers watching in the first place.
I have mixed feelings when it comes to the romance and ending. In the end, Bong Hwan returns to the present and his own body and Cheol Jong and So Yong live happily ever after. That's kinda how I thought things would go. I know a lot of viewers took issue with the ending though. They wanted So Bong to stay in Joseon or for Bong Hwan and Cheol Jong to meet again in the present. I can understand why they would feel this way. We know So Yong liked Cheol Jong from the start but Cheol Jong falls for So Bong. It's someone else in So Yong's body for most of the series so it's odd to have Cheol Jong and So Yong be the happy ending. Also, Byung In (Na In Woo) learns the truth about So Bong but Cheol Jong never does. That's another odd decision. In fairness to Mr. Queen, So Bong does tell Cheol Jong the truth early on but he just thinks the queen is crazy. Kim Jung Hyun was asked afterwards about So Bong vs So Yong, and he simply answered that Cheol Jong chose to accept and love the queen as she was. So, maybe that's the way the makers of the series want you to view the ending.
A couple of specials were released for Mr Queen which include extra scenes with the king and queen and show viewers a bit more about life in the palace.

I am currently up to Ep 13 -- I am really impressed with the actor who is playing Mr Queen, their facial expressions and body language are so "man-like", you can really think there is a man trapped in the females body. The actor playing the King is also doing a great job. I really like this drama.....
