Another episode I watched on DailyMotion. Seems to be the only source left that shows the episodes without picture distortion. No idea what happened to GoodDrama.
Starts off with Yunhwa scolding the royal physician. And then the military seizes him. Every time, the same thing—what a crappy job. Every single time.
“One becomes beset with fear and dread, which leads to irrationality, impairment of concentration, instability and infirmity of the mind...This ailment comes without warning to those who are unusually bold and strong.” There it is. Somebody on that writing staff did their homework on adult-onset anxiety disorders. The way they presented this, you can totally accept that this is exactly what’s wrong with him. Don’t know if there’s a historical basis for this or if it’s totally speculative, but either way in the story it totally works. And how often do you get this kind of depth in a character, where we delve into a psychosomatic illness like this? Absolutely loving it (not Goongyae’s suffering, the sophistication of the story).
Jongkahn’s letting the physician go? I really did not think he would. Wow. You’d think he’d at least confine him to the palace permanently.
Wait...nope he was lying. HA! Worst. Job. Ever. That poor guy. And how on earth does this help Goongyae? Here you have an elite-level talent, who knew enough to diagnose something that Jongkahn had never even heard of. Do you really want to kill maybe the only person in the country who understands your king’s illness? Yeah this is very sensitive information, but house-arrest him, don’t kill him. And besides, eventually it’s going to get around that the guy has vanished. All that will do is fuel speculation about Goongyae being seriously ill. We see this kind of thing so often in historicals...Does anybody know if it’s based in real history?
Here was a narrated text that we got just in time during Sukchong’s scene:
Sukchong: “You will soon hear about me.” Uh-oh, sounds like he’s going to do something self-sacrificial. Yikes.
Hey, spoilers! Come on! What the heck?! Are those guys so commonly known in Korea that there’s no reason not to state that now? What possible value is there in mentioning it now either way? GRRRRRRR
But you know what, those guys totally look like brothers. Don’t know if the actors actually are brothers, but either way, gold star for the casting agent on this one.
WG’s two wives are sitting properly at the table this time. I wonder if viewers complained to KBS about this in previous episodes. Was a rare mistake in the production and they made it more than once.
Yu Geungdal to his daughter. “I intend to send you to him. We do hot have the luxury to be concerned about love...Marriage can be a vehicle of mutual protection.” Wow yet another woman getting a bum deal. I mean, she seems more than fine with it so that’s fortunate, but it’s just heartbreaking to see how daughters were used as human pawns by the powerful in those days.
That wasn’t exactly a 2000-man militia we saw, was it. But yeah they’re spending enough money on other things, give them this one.
I liked this scene a lot, the guy coming out of nowhere and reciting Sun Tzu by memory. And it may have happened exactly this way, how he was “discovered” and elevated by WG. Nicely done. And that actor is the same guy who played the weasely minister Bu Kiwon in DJY. Surprised to see him in a role like this one. Curious choice, will have to keep an eye on him.
Managed to grab a screenshot of that eye-catching Bekjae battle flag (click on it to expand it):
Sudal: “You will have to cut my throat first to have the vanguard! Do you understand me?!” Always an entertaining bonus when Sudal flips out! Glad he’s still around.
Really enjoyed this episode; all kinds of interesting things happening. This series continues to pile up the positives.

Ganja...It is the symbol and evidence of Maitreya Buddha. The legend has it that renowned high monk Jinpyo was visited by Maitreya Buddha after ardent prayers, and was given Maitreya’s scriptures and a bone from his finger. Thereafter, Jinpyo spent his life traveling the turbulent world and bringing relief to the people. Some two hundred years and several generations later, evidence of Maitreya was in possession of Jinpyo’s disciple Sukchong. This account is recorded in volume 2 of Genealogical Record of Royalty.
Sukchong: “You will soon hear about me.” Uh-oh, sounds like he’s going to do something self-sacrificial. Yikes.
Yoon Shindal is the progenitor of the Yoons of Papyung. He is a man of exceptional civil and military arts skills, who would later be honored as the second meritorious retainer to Wang Guhn. Brothers Chun Yigap and Uigap of Jungsun would also render great service for Wang Guhn, and die a heroic death at the battle of Daegu after saving Wang Guhn’s life.

Tae-pyoung of Yumju was a footsoldier serving under Yu Geumpil when Wang Guhn came across him. Though he was a man of high education, he was drafted into service at the time Yumju was subjugated by Goongyae. With his aid, Wang Guhn’s power finally begins to take flight. Historical records note that Tae-pyoung was a learned man with exceptional knowledge in history.
