So we have a medical mystery at the moment. Is it panic attacks? Wouldn’t be unrealistic for him; he’s either 36 or 37 right now and there actually are adult-onset panic and anxiety disorders that can appear in a person’s 30s. Especially with those dreams that have tormented him; it’s plausible.
Strange that no one has told Goongyae about the epidemic and poverty in the kingdom. Why is everyone so afraid to tell him? It’s simply the truth, and Goongyae has never been the kind of person who shoots the messenger. Especially about the disease—yes he’s been sensitive about the poverty/sacrifice to get the capital built, but a disease isn’t part of that at all. Can anyone explain this? I don’t get it at all.
And by the way...
...this was a heck of an image. Wow give the producers credit, they’ve shown they’ll spend money to convey a single visual impression and this may have been the best one yet.
“Greetings, General Hwan. I’ve been informed of your tremendous deeds in Choongju.” Sarcasm, you don’t get a lot of that from kings! And the evil eye, too. Surprised Hwan sat there and took it as well as he did. But then to pull back and recognize his loyalty, it really showed that Goongyae isn’t completely nuts, not yet.
Incidentally, where is WG in all this? I guess he was returning to the front already, but had the generals in that scene all been called back? We could have used an explanation there.
Give Commander Yum credit for pushing Jongkahn to resist the mass and address the poverty and disease. He always seemed like the unquestioning obedient subordinate. Didn’t expect that from him.
Another brief but very valuable glimpse of life in the countryside. Pleeeeeezzze give us more of those.
Yu Geungdal, haven’t seen him since episode 34. Of course the moment Yu’s daughter showed up—right after WG complained about his army being depleted—you know what’s going to happen.
Yeah, there it is.
Why did WG say that Sulhee and Lady Daeju “are very fond of each other?” Wrong, that’s completely a one-way street, at least so far. Did Sulhee mislead him? And for that matter, how come WG didn’t know about the size of Yu Geungdal’s and Geum Shik’s private militia? That can’t have been a secret; it seemed surprising that he’d be caught completely unaware of it.
Yu Geungdal: “Unselfish good leaders are few in this time of turmoil. We truly respect you, General Wang.” Continuing to develop a very believable situation as far as why people would support WG. He isn’t the charismatic alpha male but he’s going about his job with competence and decency, and that scores points in this chaotic environment.
Nung Ae: “King Kwangaetoe of Old Koguryo once conquered most of China. Kingdom of Sui was humiliated and eventually led to ruin.” Most of China? No. Incorrect.
WG goes in to meet Ahjagae...Choi Soo Jong has got to be wearing elevator shoes. And notice how they shot the scene from a low camera to make him look bigger. To be fair, it did work.
Overall another quieter episode. Still it was good, no complaints here.

Yu Geungdal was a man of influence in Choongju. His daughter later becomes Empress Shinmyung Soonsung, third wife of Wang Guhn. Including Princess Naklang, and Kings Jungjong and Kwangjong, she bears six children for Wang Guhn in all, and is speculated to have been the favorite of all of his wives.
Yeah, there it is.
