“You were indeed Maitreya when you first erected this kingdom, but you are no longer.” Terrific opening! Sukchong was so fearless...and the way he barbequed Jongkahn and Eunbu for acting like flunkies was hilarious. Certainly didn’t expect him to walk out of that room a free man, was wrong about that. Goongyae still has some semblance of self-control.
“I have no selfish desires. I am doing this to end centuries of disunity and suffering in the Three Kingdoms.” Extremely interesting hearing Goongyae’s thoughts there. Refutes the idea that he’s become consumed by personal glory or self-interest. He still clearly thinks he’s doing what he’s doing for the public good, in his increasingly warped way of looking at it all. The way we’ve seen Goongyae get increasingly nuts, this scene was sort of a surprise, but I guess it was necessary...clarified in what way he’s nuts, and in what way he isn’t.
So Choi Seung Woo says they should try to assassinate Goongyae, and everybody else including Kyun-hwon says it’s a great idea that will cause tremendous harm to the kingdom. Really? Seems like Goongyae is doing so much harm to the kingdom himself, why would you want to bump him off? Leave him and let him keep messing things up more and more. But then they talked about trying to frame WG for the attempt, which that could add a productive twist to it, no question, if they could make it stick—but this seems like it will be very difficult. Who’s really going to doubt WG’s loyalty?
The way Doyoung is talking, about how the world would be watching the Wangs with their new gift of an imperial city...she’d better be darned careful about that. She’s power-hungry—maybe not for herself but the way she’s talking, it’s a great way to get her husband in a lot of trouble.
“It is a conspiracy to undermine the emperor!” Gee, ya think? I was wondering when the smear campaign would get going. This should be really good.
That was not a well-planned assassination attempt to say the least. In fact it was embarrassingly stupid! With all of the countryside that the royal party rode through to get to Chulwon, and with Goongyae right out in front leading everyone the whole way there, they wait until they’re in the middle of a crowded urban construction site to try to kill him? The fire was a smart diversion to draw the guards away, but that first arrow, what a poor shot it was—they were very, very lucky to get any sort of follow-up shot at Goongyae at all. Blecch!
Maybe this really did happen in history, though. Hopefully we get a narrated text about it (we haven’t had a single narrated text in the last three episodes). We know he doesn’t die at this point, but the series has been good about not tossing in fictional plot twists for dramatic effect.
