“You were seen striking the rope with an ax. This was not an accident.” Yeah see? This whole thing wasn’t up to the standards of the series. The guy made a big obvious swing with the hatchet and it was very audible. Of course he got caught. And this was precisely the wrong time to do it, too--definitely you don’t want the emperor getting caught up in this first-hand. I understand why the writers did it this way, to make it more dramatic, but they could have had Goongyae rushing to Chulwon after the attempt was made and he heard about it, rather than it happening when he was there.
And on top of all that, rolling logs doesn’t seem like a very sure-fire way to kill somebody. Why not just booby-trap the stairs so the whole thing collapses when he gets to the top of them? A long enough fall will be much more likely to kill him. So overall just not a well-written sequence.
Wow that look Goongyae was shooting at Eunbu, that was the mother of all skunk-eyes! No wonder Eunbu seemed a little squirmy. That was great. Of course he’s just got the one good eye so that made it more effective...but still, loved it.
Jongkahn to Park Yu: “Try to stay out of political matters. It is ill-suited for an honest and straightforward man like you. Don’t put yourself in danger.” It looked like Park was going to burst out in tears! Such a sad face. But Jongkahn was 100% right. Park already got himself almost executed for taking straight with Goongyae. He’s just too direct and open. As it is he’s got an important job that will put him around the bigwigs regularly so he’d better be real careful.
“The old female monk he referred to as his mother was confirmed to have been King Kyungmoon’s concubine.” That was a great moment, with everybody suddenly buzzing. The scenes of the Bekjae council having their meetings are consistently some of the best directed scenes in the series. Whoever is handling those, nice work.
“Winning without fighting is the best way to win.” That came at exactly the right moment--was waiting for somebody to spit some Sun Tzu back at those overconfident generals. Kind of surprising that they were so resistant to the idea of stirring unrest with propaganda...and also kind of surprising that Vice PM Choi just fluffed off the possibility that Koryo was actually planning an attack. But Kyun-hwon handled everything properly.
Jongkahn: “Your majesty has always displayed humility, and that is what has kept our people loyal to you.” Goongyae: “Things are different now.” Yes they are. Amazing how this new ambitious dream seems to have make Goongyae completely forget his past and the reasons he's been so successful.
“Is that why you tried to have Ahjitae killed?” Doink! Sure did not expect that...although you can understand why Goongyae would naturally suspect him. Good ending--eager to see if Jongkahn tries to deny it.

■ Sukchong, the dominating figure of orthodox Maitreya sect, has begun to doubt Goongyae. This was extremely important, as Goongyae’s success had been largely due to the belief that he is indeed Maitreya of salvation. The fate of Goongyae’s administration hinged on this faith, and it was beginning to be questioned by the high monk of Maitreya sect Sukchong.
