Very eager to watch this one, but first I went back and rewatched the meeting scene from last time. Brilliant stuff, absolutely perfectly done.
Now Oh’s daughter is being smug and condescending. Not liking her so much.
Okay well that explains why she’s being portrayed as she is. Give credit to the writers and producers for being faithful to it.
And to her credit, she’s the only person who talked about cutting a deal and getting something in return for what Koryo is asking. I’ve been surprised that WG didn’t present some sort of deal in his letter, and surprised that Oh didn’t jump right in and ask for a deal immediately. Of course he’s been in such shock, maybe it’s understandable. But whatever, she’s obviously smart.
“Have our ancestors ever lived a harnessed life? We are seafarers who have always lived freely!” It sure is interesting to see the power of even distant family connections in all this, how much it’s influencing the thinking. And this was another terrific scene, Oh Darin and Jonglae trying to decide what to do.
Yunhwa: “It is the good work of the nannies, your majesty.” Good for her for crediting the staff. Very classy. Incidentally what is that thing on her head? No doubt it’s authentic but geez, doesn’t it drive her nuts having a big stone sitting there right above her eyes? Would sure bug me to wear something like that.
“Secret Script of Dosun?!” There we go. Jongkahn had the reaction I was expecting from everybody else. And that was another good scene. Ahjitae criticizing Jongkahn like he did, so obnoxiously mouthing off in front of the boss, wow. But in the end, seeing who’s right and who’s wrong will come down to how WG ascends to power—whether or not he seeks it deliberately or on the other hand will Goongyae simply self-destruct. Will be quite a while before we can answer this one.
Goongyae to Lord Park: “If I gain a brother-in-law, I will have to look after him. He will abuse his position as the empress’s brother, and the royal court will have an undesired force of influence to deal with. That will cause many to be wary of you. Do you understand?” Well I certainly do now, and it makes perfect sense. Last time when Yunhwa got all bothered by it, it really wasn’t clear what the big deal was. Nice piece of writing here to spell it out for everyone.
“Why are you so incompetent? Is it so hard to win your father’s affection?” Geez now even mom is picking on her sons. Bad enough that KH is doing it and they’re getting it from their father. Your heart goes out to them—at this point they can’t please anybody.

Empress Janghwa...She would later become Wang Guhn’s second empress, and bear King Haejong who succeeds Wang’s throne. She is the daughter of merchant baron Oh Darin of Mokpo. Historical records suggest she was an outgoing, assertive woman. Here, she was weighing the losses and gains with the future of Geumsung at stake.
