One-fourth of the way through and it seems like it flew by. And no new historicals in sight yet, unfortunately, so it looks like this was the right time to do this series. 50 was yet another very good episode; stories going on in three places and they’re all working well. Just one bad moment in the episode, and it was way bad.
What an opening shot! Two multi-deck ships being built, with all the workmen and materials and tools, wow. They may be a little smaller than the actual ships were, but no complaints here, bravo. Today they’d CGI that to save money.
“You should drink some yourself.” WG went up a notch in my book for that. I was thinking the same thing, but how many bigshot men back then would have thought enough to offer her some of his beverage. Class gesture by him. And this whole you-shouldn’t-be-serving-me thing is awfully funny. She is gonna wear him down yet, despite his fidgeting and grumbling.
“Do you not fear for your lives in this enemy land?” This again...They’re not at war. But come to think of it, maybe it had the feel of a cold-war kind of situation, like if we went behind the Iron Curtain during the USSR days. Maybe?
The episode was going along really well until Sikryum pulls out the Dosun book and the pages are blank. None of them (and none of us) can see the writing because we’re not special enough. Are you kidding? Why go back to that magic/mystic nonsense? It seemed like the series had thankfully put that silliness behind it when Dosun died. People made prophecies and predictions all the time back then, so there’s nothing wrong with an angle like that. There was never any need to sell it with this kind of silliness. Boo hiss.
The one narrated text:
Hey, spoiler! Stop that! Completely unnecessary.
And how about those three-week-old babies being played by real-life babies who are several months old. Gotta love TV.
So that answers the question from last time about the twins possibly becoming rivals: they actually did designate older and younger ones even as twins, and the older one will be the crown prince. Tough break for #2, geez. Couldn't push your way out of there first and you pay for it the rest of your life.
We’re getting closer to the answer about who Oh Darin’s ancestor was. One of JB’s two highest-ranking subjects, from what Oh said. From what we saw in the EOS series that would probably be either Jung Yon or Choi Moo Chang. Here’s his monologue, which I’ll treat as a narrated text:
That final scene was a real humdinger too, and the way they staged it was perfect, in the nighttime with the shadows. It seemed like Goongyae’s irritation with Jongkhan is deeper than just the one issue about the capital. Maybe he’s gotten to feel like Jongkahn is working him too much like a marionette, and now that he’s out of the capital he’s better able to express his feelings. Whatever, it was well done. Good episode.

The one narrated text:
Chungkwang and Shinkwang...Self-proclaimed Maitreya, Goongyae, had given his sons Buddhist names. Chungkwang signified Bodhisattva of Compassion, and Shinkwang signified Buddha of Western Paradise. This tells us that Goongyae belonged to Mahayana Buddhism. Naming his first son Chungkwang (Blue Light), which signified Bodhisattva of Compassion, also shows his intent for the child to succeed to the throne. However, the lives of the two boys would be cut short by the hands of their own father, Goongyae.

Great General Jang Bogo of yore possessed both power and wealth. He dominated the vast sea, send trade missions to Japan and Tang, and created a new world with trilateral trading...As General Jang’s direct subordinate, our forefather oversaw many direct operations. There were only two men in such position. Details are unsure, but the two were confidants who came from Shilla colony in Tang. Our forefather was one of them. After General Jang was killed and his naval base crumbled, our forefather settled here in Mokpo.
