Cliffhanger fizzled. Lord Yu dropped that marriage topic pretty quickly, didn’t he? Almost too quickly. Like he’s got a plan of some sort. We shall see.
“Is your father out of his mind? Attend to General Wang’s needs?” Well calm down mom, I didn’t get the impression he’s pimping off his own daughter.
Yunhwa’s parents: “You must have a son so he can succeed to his majesty’s throne.” But no pressure! Sheesh.
“I will end up like Madam Bukwon. I will die struggling like she did.” Finally we get some into why Yunhwa has been acting so over-the-top dramatic lately. But why would she think this? Madam Bukwon was the daughter of an enemy leader. What about her own situation makes her see similarities here? I guess we wait and see.
“I didn’t want to leave Chulwon in the first place.” Well on that much at least, give Ahjitae some credit, he talked sense to Goognyae. I was just surprised that Goongyae didn’t immediately follow up on his comment about a “questionable prophecy.”
The generals and Jongkahn meet to discuss military invasion plans. So why the dancing girls? Are they invading Las Vegas? What the heck.
“I do not drink, and dancers and musicians are inappropriate.” And it was all WG’s idea. He’s supposed to be smart! Ugh.
And speaking of not smart, for someone who’s supposed to be an enlightened monk, Jongkahn certainly is sort of insecure in his position. In that meeting he sure was trying to lord it over everybody else. Pay me respect and fear my wrath, I am watching you, blah blah blah. Obviously Ahjitae has him all hot and bothered, but still, don’t irritate people you need on your side.
And as usual, a terrific montage of scenes to accompany it. We saw ships being built--actual size and with what looked like period tools--and soldiers being trained in the water on the coastline. That certainly cost some serious money for those images. The only negative was I didn’t like the spoiler they tossed in. We didn’t need to hear about anything they’re not depicting yet. Served no useful purpose.
Look at the ship drawings--very nice! Somebody did some work putting those together.
The computer simulation of the ships’ design was excellent. Loved that. But why the cheap shot at Columbus? We’ve run into this before in historicals; trying to sell Korean historical achievements at the expense of others’ achievements. Columbus wasn’t transporting a military operation and he was on somebody else’s dime so he wasn’t going to use more elaborate ships than what he had. If Koryo had the best ships in the world at this time then fair enough, but explain it properly. That didn’t prove anything.
“They won’t dispute you if you say you are of Jang Bogo’s lineage.” Now cut that out! Yeah he’s the spitting image of the guy, isn’t he. What a coincidence.
But wow, Lord Yu is really shaping up to be the hero in all this. He’s pretty much setting everything up and laying it in WG’s lap.
Yu said that Oh Darin is a descendant of one of Jang Bogo’s “trusted subjects.” I tried to figure out which one. Doesn’t appear to be anyone we saw in EOTS.
“You will become my son-in-law someday. There is nothing I would spare for you.” So he does have a plan. Not giving up on this.
“I hope you give birth to a girl. In Chinese history there are many accounts of concubines’ children losing their lives as results of foolish covetousness of the throne....Will his majesty’s adoration protect you forever?” Gee maybe the ominous music from last time wasn’t so inappropriate after all. Mrs. Kyun-hwon is acting so hyper-territorial, you half expect her to start peeing all over the palace to mark it.
I’ll give CSJ some credit here, the way WG is grumbling about being served by Yu’s daughter, very funny and entirely believable. Good job by him.
“I intend to create a chance for them to bed together.” DOINK! Okay I was wrong, he’s pimping her out. “Living a long, happy life together is more important than having a wedding. There can be no result without an opportunity.” So is he trying to induce a shotgun wedding? “He is a man of greatness. I will be content if he accepts her as my gift for the night.” If he’s really serious about this and not just misleading his wife for some reason then here’s another woman in the series who you have to feel sorry for.
“Does the empress still remain in your heart? I think she does.” Whoa...I like her already. She’s very direct without being rude or pushy, and obviously smart. “Because I also...” Well now there was an interesting little incomplete sentence. Did she lose her first love like WG did, is that the implication? Sure seemed like it.
“What is wrong? She has been in labor since this morning?” Relax, grandma...It’ll give her something to guilt her kids with when they misbehave. I do and do and do for you kids and this is the thanks I get.
“How can a woman hold up under an entire day of labor pain?” Cause she’s a woman, Goongyae, and you aren’t. They can do that and we can’t.
And we end on a scene from Call the Midwife.

Geumsung Invasion...This is how the most ingenious and astonishing battle of the Later Three Kingdoms Era begins. Wang Guhn had made two attempts to procure Geumsung in the years 903 and 909, and this is depiction of the events in 903. As the court approves his plans, Wang Guhn begins a full-scale preparation. It was the beginning of a work that would display his skills and expertise as a master mariner He built battleships and trained soldiers in complete concealment. Special training was disguised as routine training, and battleships were disguised as Lord Yu’s commercial ships. This operation was so well concealed that Shilla, Bekjae, and even the citizens of Koryo had no idea about the mission.
And as usual, a terrific montage of scenes to accompany it. We saw ships being built--actual size and with what looked like period tools--and soldiers being trained in the water on the coastline. Wang Guhn’s battleships were larger than what one might expect. Each accommodated 120 soldiers with their horses and weaponry, and were 17.5 meters wide and 35 meters long. These ships were considerably larger than the ships used in Christopher Columbus’s voyage across the Atlantic in 1492. Koryo possessed surpassed shipbuilding skills 500 years earlier. But yet, Wang Guhn was nervous and troubled. He knew that this plan would not work if he could not secure a source of inside support from Geumsung.
