So the whole Mihyang/Madam Bukwon story really took over this episode. That was a big surprise. You sort of figured she’d just come to a tragic end one day and her part of the story would fade away. For a while in the episode I didn’t understand why she was getting so much attention and it got to be a bit annoying. But now even WG is paying attention to her so maybe the writers have a bigger purpose in mind for her. And she’s getting more of the operatic music she got last time too, so something significant must be brewing.
“I feel pity for her, the poor woman...Let this event be overlooked. It was my fault for having a banquet here when traces of her family’s deaths are still fresh.” Continues to be first-rate writing in this series. These characters are thoughtful and reflective and react to things like real people do.
Goongyae: “I envy you for being unwed. Women are encumbrances to men.” So I’m guessing no Equal Rights Amendment for Koryo?
“Nothing is to my satisfaction. Just looking at you frustrates me.” Geez Mrs. Kyun-hwon is really being a bitch today. But then later: “I feel pathetic displaying jealousy against a child like her.” Well okay at least she realizes that. More thoughtfulness from another character. But poor Kobi, here’s another young woman put in a lousy situation and made miserable.
“Even the great Lee Saemin of Tang had once kneeled before Koguryo’s Anshi fort.” Hey we saw that! The dirt hill collapse in DJY. That was fun to watch.
A very interesting exchange, with Kyun-hwon’s younger son complaining about being blamed for the Daeya attack’s failure, and Neunghwan telling him to knock it off and be quiet even though the kid is right. I think especially for Western viewers this one will hit home.
Smart move by the Shillans to hit the supply convoy during that messy downpour. Glad we’re getting to see some of the Shillan side now. I’m surprised more of the generals aren’t being identified by name...maybe there are no records of their names?
“Relay this order. They are to push forward to Wansanju and recapture my territory!” Wow this King Hyogong is no rocket scientist, is he. Apparently the whole peninsula will end up in the hands of whoever is the least stupid. From what we’re seeing now that’s not saying very much, is it.
Goongyae: “I am greatly pleased with the empress’s beautiful heart. She indeed possesses royal virtues of an empress.” Okay well that’s better than last time at least.
Ugh, another scene with Choi Soo Jong standing on a box. Looking down at Eunbu. This could become a running joke if the director isn’t careful.
On first viewing there’s a big problem with the ending. Those soldiers moved away from the house like they expected it to be set on fire. But Mihyang knocked that candle over on accident, after the soldiers had left. We’ll need proper resolution here.
Mihyang’s gradual deterioration has been handled very well by the writers. Very believable. These writers should tackle the Sado story. From what’s in Lady Hyegyeong’s memoirs, there are plenty of parallels.

The birth of Prodigy Choi Ung...Chronicle of Koryo writes about it like this: When Choi Ung was conceived, a melon was yielded from his family’s cucumber stalk. Upon hearing of this, Goongyae foretold that a male child would be malignant to the kingdom, and ordered his death. Thus he was raised in hiding. Choi Ung mastered Chinese writing and literature at a very young age, and was placed in the Royal Academy in his early teens, receiving Goongyae’s praise as the ultimate sage of his time. He later saves Wang Guhn from being prosecuted for...(text missing from translation)...by the writ of Maitreya worship with his unique wit, and would engage in a battle of ingenuity with Kyun-hwon’s Choi Seung-woo during the unification war as Wang Guhn’s tactician. This came totally out of nowhere, and went right back where it came from. Strange that it popped up here for no apparent reason in this episode. What was the point? But hey how about that melon story. Maybe it needs its own series! The kid’s mom could sing the theme song. Come to Me My Melon-choly Baby.

Shilla...sovereignty of 1,000 years was slowly on its course of downfall. When Goongyae had conquered the northern region, and Kyun-hwon was at the doorsteps of Daeya Fort, Shilla’s King Hyogong was absorbed in debauchery. Goongyae arrived at Myungju Castle about this time.Again with the empress at the business meeting. At least this time she had a reason....but after this one I’m guessing she won’t be at any more of them.
